Dědic tvrze svévolně odhazuje krunýř vojenského šatu a vrací se domů. Nachází tvrz v troskách. Dopřává jí novou tvář, soustřeďuje kolem sebe odkudsi prchající, věkově, národnostně i charakterově rozdílné, prahnoucí do teple aspoň dočasného domova. I v odlehlém krajinném zákoutí se na tvrz postupně vkrádá pocit ohrožení. Matoucí zprávy ze světa jsou stejně nespolehlivé jako ti, kteří je přinášejí.
Na tvrz přicházejí podezřelí cizinci. Vnášejí neklid, vyvolávají drobné sváry, i na hrdelní činy dochází, vztahy se komplikují, také milostné vzněty či pouhé lehkomyslné hrátky zasévají svá semena. Okolní vesnice, tvrze i objekty rozličného účelu podléhají zkáze, podivné přesuny vojsk jsou předzvěstí dalších nepokojů. Pozornost budí vzdálené noční požáry. Dochází k přímému ohrožení, pán na tvrzi se snaží uchránit obyvatele před přímou konfrontací s možnou přesilou, dává však přednost slovu před mečem. Vysílá zvědy, kontrolující okolí. Nejmladší odchází s konkrétním posláním do vzdálené vsi, která se vzpamatovává z pobytu bezohledných nájezdníků. Krajinou zmítanou přesuny vojsk se komplikovaně vrací s dívkou, která přišla o všechno. Také jim se močál stává svízelnou noční překážkou. V podzimně laděné náruči divoké pahorkaté krajiny spěchají ke tvrzi jako k bezpečnému útočišti…
