Mimořádná osobnost české kultury Čeněk Šlégl, filmový a divadelní herec, režisér a scenárista, dlouholetý člen Divadla Vlasty Buriana, měl jedinou dceru Blanku. Ta se ve 30. letech zamilovala do Arnošta Weisse, muže židovského původu. V roce 1941, v rozporu s platnými norimberskými zákony, se za něj provdala. Tím začalo vyhrožování likvidací celé rodiny slavného umělce a začal zápas o holé životy. Populární herec byl přinucen k učinkování v antisemitských rozhlasových skečích, k napsání protižidovského románu, k propagandistické cestě do Říše, k převzetí nacistického vyznamenání … Těmito kroky vědomě ohrozil svou kariéru a pošpinil svou pověst před celým národem. Dokázal však intervencemi zachránit životy svého zetě, dcery i teprve dvouleté vnučky Zuzany, která měla být v roce 1945 jakožto poloviční Židovka zlikvidována. Šlégl byl po válce odsouzen k půlročnímu těžkému žaláři a již nikdy se k umělecké práci nevrátil.

Sleduje vývoj jeho kariéry od jejích počátků v Anglii v polovině čtyřicátých let až do současnosti a pokouší se jej vsadit do souvislostí, dobového kontextu a pojmenovat možné Brookovy inspirační zdroje.
