Dokumentarista je další ze série knih Martina Mahdala v Olympii, která se opírá o jeho zkušenosti dokumentaristy. Volně tak navazuje na dokumentární publikaci Zákon pěti klasů (Olympia, 2022) a především na knihu Devadesátky (Olympia, 2023), ve které autor přiblížil své tvrdě zaplacené zkušenosti z porevolučního podnikání coby jedna z obětí Berdychova gangu. Stejně jako u předchozích knih mu i při přípravě Dokumentaristy byla nápomocna jeho kolegyně producentka Markéta Adamcová.
