Vzpomínky přední české novinářky Lídy Rakušanové představují otevřenou a nic nepředstírající výpověď o osobním i pracovním životě člověka, v jehož osudu se podobně jako u celé generace vrstevníků odrážely a tak či onak jej formovaly dramatické peripetie dějin druhé poloviny 20. století. Čtenář se z první ruky dozvídá o jednání a názorech známých i méně známých představitelů československého exilu i domácí polistopadové společnosti v často překvapivých souvislostech. Šíře záběru vyprávění přesahuje běžné osobní memoáry text se stává důležitým dokumentem doby, aniž pozbývá na čtivosti.
Po maturitě na gymnáziu v Českých Budějovicích studovala až do odchodu do exilu na Universitě Karlově češtinu a dějepis. V letech 19751994 pracovala v redakci československého vysílání Rádia Svobodná Evropa v Mnichově. Po návratu pak působila v Českém rozhlase a v České televizi a stala se dlouhodobou pozorovatelkou a komentátorkou transformace české společnosti. V roce 1993 byla oceněna titulem Žena Evropy. Chronologicky pojaté vyprávění začíná roky nesnadného dětství. Středoškolačka Lída pak objevuje sama sebe a začíná se zajímat o celospolečenské dění zejména v liberální atmosféře druhé poloviny šedesátých let. Po okupaci Československa sovětskou armádou v srpnu 1968 se rozhodla zemi se svým partnerem opustit.
Lída Rakušanová je svrchovaná stylistka, jak však sama přiznává, některé kapitoly se jí nepsaly lehce. Ještě nikdy nebyla ve svém psaní tak osobní, a zároveň se snažila vyvážit ohledy k dosud žijícím osobám se snahou nic důležitého nezamlčet. I líčení trampot a radostí emigrantů je díky tomu velmi živé.
Jako novinářka spolupracovala autorka s legendami české žurnalistiky, jimiž byli Sláva Volný, Milan Schulz nebo Karel Jezdinský, v RFE se seznámila i s významnými spisovateli Josefem Jedličkou a Ivanem Divišem. Věcně popisuje poměry v redakci i vztahy s vedením stanice (bývala to úmorná zákopová válka o prosazení každého, byť i jen trochu nekonvenčního hlasu nebo nekonformního názoru do vysílání, ať už z undergroundu nebo z Charty 77), vztahy mezi Čechy a Slováky, do vzpomínkového děje vstupují Karel Kryl a Pavel Tigrid, s nimiž, jakož i s jinými, autorka navštěvuje exilová symposia pořádaná sdružením Opus Bonum a jeho zakladatelem Anastázem Opaskem.
Rakušanová zprostředkovávala kontakty exilu s domácí opozicí a významně tak přispěla k návratu demokracie do Československa. Po roce 1989 se jako již respektovaná novinářka setkávala s řadou osobností politického a společenského života a v proudu vzpomínek mnohé z nich zachycuje ve stručných mikroportrétech.
Knihu provází řada většinou dosud nepublikovaných fotografií; převážně jsou dílem autorčina manžela a celoživotního druha Josefa Rakušana.

Obsahem knihy není nic, co bych neprožila, neprošlo mým poznáním, co by mě neoslovilo v minulosti, přítomnosti; nejspíš to tak bude i v budoucnosti. Za duchovním vývojem bývá dost slziček, zklamání, beznaděje, ale i touha jít dál. Člověk se posouvá na tom horším, na pohodlném se dá zakrnět. Není hanbou upadnout, ale je hanbou zůstat dlouho ležet. Nic nedostáváme zadarmo. Znovu se narodit, nejspíš bych vyšlápla stejnou hrbolatou cestou, kde nevíme, co nás čeká. O to je to zajímavější, pestřejší. Mám v povaze trochu se brodit, trochu chtít odstraňovat překážky, trochu přemýšlet, trochu si zaskuhrat, trochu se politovat, motivovat, učit se nové, ale vždy s potřebou nahodit motor a jet dopředu.
Promiňte, prosím, jestli jsem se nechtěně v knížce někoho dotkla; nebyl v tom úmysl, jen lidská nedokonalost. Nahlížíme-li do studny poznání, nemusí nás to činit šťastnými. Jen blázni bývají šťastni ze samé podstaty bytí.
Můj život Pekelného Anděla
Neplánoval jsem, že napíši knihu, až odejdu od Pekelných Andělů. Po více než třech desetiletí jako prezident pobočky HA Ventura, mírotvorce a mluvčí klubu, byl jsem strašně rád, že jsem rezignoval, v tichosti si vedu své záležitosti, jsem nejlepší manžel a otec podle svých možností, a odjel jsem do motorkářského důchodu.
