Věra Gissingová se narodila v roce 1929 v Čelákovicích u Prahy rodičům židovského původu. V červenci 1939 odjela společně se sestrou Evou jedním ze záchranných transportů, organizovaných britským makléřem Nicholasem Wintonem, do Velké Británie, kde v bezpečí prožila 2. světovou válku.
Její rodiče zahynuli v nacistických koncentračních táborech. Přesto se Věra – tehdy ještě Diamantová – vrátila do osvobozeného Československa, kde ji ale čekalo další zklamání, které vyústilo až v dobrovolnou emigraci.
O tom všem pojednává autobiografická kniha Perličky dětství, složená nejen z osobních vzpomínek, ale také z deníkových záznamů a dopisů, které si Věra psala především s rodiči a se sestrou.
