Není překvapivé, že vliv Carla Schmitta - nacistického právníka a politického teoretika, kterého mnozí komentátoři na pravici i na levici označují za možná vůbec nejpronikavějšího kritika liberalismu – sílí právě v době konce „konce historie“, kdy tolik profesionálních i laických teoretiků hledá či obhajuje alternativy k liberální demokracii. Tento celoživotní, třebaže často skrytě působící prosazovatel „teokratického totalitarismu“ a „skutečné katolické intenzifikace politiky“ je dnes vedle upřímně míněných snah o „demokratičtější“ demokracii důležitým ideologickým zdrojem autoritářských režimů jak Ruska, tak Číny. V neposlední řadě je také myslitelem, který již před sto lety poskytl podrobný návod pro to, co dnes nazýváme autoritářským populismem: opevnit se u moci, zatímco se populista zaklíná právě „demokratičtější demokracií“. Schmittovy zdánlivě neutrální a „pronikavé“ analýzy však nelze ve skutečnosti oddělit od jeho politických cílů. Odmítnout Schmitta však zároveň neznamená, že bychom se museli vzdát snah odstranit z demokracie ty prvky liberalismu, které skutečně nejsou demokratické – jsou to právě ty prvky, které liberalismus – překvapivě – se Schmittem sdílí.
Kniha Jana Buráně je reakcí na současnou popularitu Carla Schmitta. Autor tvrdí, že Schmittovy často neutrálně vyhlížející analýzy jsou ve skutečnosti natolik prostoupené jeho zavrženíhodnými normativními cíli, že je nelze využívat způsobem, jenž by nebyl nebezpečný pro demokracii. Pokouší se identifikovat, rozebrat a vyvrátit jednotlivé Schmittovy argumenty, a následně také ukázat, jak jsou využívány levicovým autoritářským populismem či krajně pravicovými ideology putinovského Ruska.

‘Nobody knows how much I owe that man’, Primo Levi said of his Italian compatriot Lorenzo Perrone, who saved his life at Auschwitz. ‘I could never repay him’.
