Broken Biscuits

Witty, tender and daring essays from the British David Sedaris''A lovely writer: supple, stylish and almost effortlessly witty.'' Daily Mail''Made me laugh out loud and then properly cry.’ Jennie GodfreyWhen it comes to the challenge of being a man, Adam Farrer always seems to find a way to fall short…Broken Biscuits vividly recounts Adam’s struggles to live up to masculine expectations, real or imagined. From the calamity of his first serious relationship to an obsession with Prince that sees everyone questioning his sexuality, and from the repercussions of his adult circumcision to his doubts about his ability to survive the apocalypse, this candid and personal collection of essays is astonishingly far-reaching and riotously funny.Holding up a mirror to Adam’s own body image, his relationship with his family, his sense of self-worth and the mortifying experience of arriving at a teenage party wearing strawberry-patterned short shorts, this book is about growing up and trying to define yourself as a man but somehow always missing the mark.

Her Space, Her Time

An exciting new title in the vein of Hidden Figures, which tells the inspiring stories of long-overlooked women physicists and astronomers who discovered the fundamental rules of the universe and reshaped the rules of society.Women physicists and astronomers from around the world have transformed science and society, but the critical roles they played in their fields are not always well-sung. Her Space, Her Time, authored by award-winning quantum physicist Shohini Ghose, brings together the stories of these remarkable women to celebrate their indelible scientific contributions. In each chapter of the book, Ghose explores a scientific topic and explains how the women featured in that chapter revolutionized that area of physics and astronomy. In doing so, she also addresses particular aspects of women?s experiences in physics and astronomy: in the chapter on time, for instance, we learn of Henrietta Leavitt and Margaret Burbidge, who helped discover the big bang and the cosmic calendar; in the chapter on space exploration, we learn of Anigaduwagi (Cherokee) aerospace scientist Mary Golda Ross, who helped make the Moon landings possible; and in the chapter on subatomic particles, we learn of Marietta Blau, Hertha Wambacher, and Bibha Chowdhuri, who contributed to the discovery of the building blocks of the universe, and, in doing so, played a crucial role in determining who gets to do physics today.Engaging, accessible, and timely, Her Space, Her Time is a collective story of scientific innovation, inspirational leadership, and overcoming invisibility that will leave a lasting impression on any reader curious about the rule-breakers and trendsetters who illuminated our understanding of the universe. Some of the featured women scientists in the book?   Williamina Fleming?   Annie Jump Cannon?   Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin?   Antonia Maury?   Henrietta Leavitt?   Margaret Burbidge?   Mary Golda Ross?   Dilhan Eryurt?   Claudia Alexander?   Joyce Neighbors?   Navajo women of Shiprock ?   Harriet Brooks?   Marie Curie?   Lise Meitner?   Marietta Blau?   Hertha Wambacher?   Bibha Chowdhuri?   Wu Chien-Shiung?   Women of the Manhattan Project?   Vera Rubin

Stranger in the Desert

One Thanksgiving afternoon at his grandparents'' house, Jordan Salama discovers a large binder stuffed with yellowing papers and old photographs - a five-hundred-year wandering history of his Arab-Jewish family, from Moorish Spain to Ottoman Syria to Argentina and beyond. One story in particular captures his attention: that of his great-grandfather, a Syria-born, Arabic-speaking Jewish immigrant to Argentina who in the 1920s worked as a traveling salesman in the Andes - and may have left behind forgotten descendants along the way. Encouraged by his grandfather, Jordan goes in search of these ''Lost Salamas,'' traveling more than a thousand miles up the spine of South America''s greatest mountain range. Combining travelog, history, memoir, and reportage, Stranger in the Desert transports readers from the lonely plains of Patagonia to the breath-taking altiplano of the high Andes; from the old Jewish quarter of Damascus to today''s vibrant neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires. It is also a fervent journey of self-discovery as Salama grapples with his own Jewish, Arab, and Latin American identities, interrogating the stories families tell themselves, and to what end.

Unlovable

Darren Hayes was always a storyteller. As a child, in suburban Queensland in the 1970s, he told himself he was going to be a pop star ? and he did it. Literature for the People

From an impoverished childhood in the Scottish highlands to Victorian London, this is the inspiring story of two brothers – Daniel and Alexander Macmillan – who built a publishing empire – and brought Alice in Wonderland to the world. Their remarkable achievements are revealed in this entertaining, superbly researched biography. 'Absorbing' – Literary ReviewDaniel and Alexander arrived in London in the 1830s at a crucial moment of social change. These two idealistic brothers, working-class sons of a Scottish crofter, went on to set up a publishing house that spread radical ideas on equality, science and education across the world. They also brought authors like Lewis Carroll, Thomas Hardy and Charles Kingsley, and poets like Matthew Arnold and Christina Rossetti, to a mass audience. No longer would books be just for the upper classes. In Literature for the People Sarah Harkness brings to life these two warm-hearted men. Daniel was driven by the knowledge that he was living on borrowed time, his body ravaged by tuberculosis. Alexander took on responsibility for the company as well as Daniel’s family and turned a small business into an international powerhouse. He cultivated the literary greats of the time, weathered controversy and tragedy, and fostered a dynasty that would include future prime minister Harold Macmillan. Including fascinating insights about the great, the good and the sometimes wayward writers of the Victorian era, with feuds, friendships and passionate debate, this vibrant book is bursting with all the energy of that exciting period in history. Trailblazer

‘Jane Robinson is brilliant at putting the women back into history and her biography of Barbara Leigh Bodichon, a Victorian feminist we should all be grateful to, is as entertaining as it is necessary.’ - Daisy GoodwinYou have probably not heard of Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon but you certainly should have done. Name any 'modern' human rights movement, and she was a pioneer: feminism, equal opportunities, diversity, inclusion, mental health awareness, Black Lives Matter. While her name has been omitted from too many history books, it was Barbara that opened the doors for more famous names to walk through. And her influence owed as much to who she was as to what she did: people loved her for her robust sense of humour, cheerfulness and indiscriminate acts of kindness. This is a celebration of the life of the founder of Britain's suffrage movement: campaigner for equal opportunity in the workplace, the law, at home and beyond. Co-founder of Girton, the first university college for women, a committed activist for human rights, fervently anti-slavery, she was also one of Victorian England's finest female painters. Jane Robinson's brilliant new book shines a light on a remarkable woman who lived on her own terms and to whom we owe a huge debt. ‘Skillful storytelling and a warm-hearted narrative style . . . What a lot we have to thank Barbara Bodichon and her circle for’ Literary Review‘Stylishly written, and rich with entertaining anecdotes, Robinson’s biography reanimates this almost forgotten, generous and visionary woman’ The Lady‘Lively and well researched’ The Times

Presidents at War

World War II loomed over the twentieth century, transforming every level of American society and international politics and searing itself onto the psyche of an entire generation, including that of six American presidents: John F. Kennedy, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush. The lessons of World War II, more than party affiliation or ideology, defined the presidencies of these six men. They returned home determined to confront any force that threatened to undermine the war''s hard-won ideals, each with their own unique understanding of patriotism, sacrifice, and America''s role in global politics. In Presidents at War, Gillon examines what these men took away from the war and how they then applied it to Cold War policy that proceeded to change America, and the world, forever. A nuanced and deeply-researched exploration of the lives, philosophies, and legacies of six remarkable men, Presidents at War deftly argues that the lessons learned by these post-war presidents continue to shape the landscape upon which current, and future, presidents stand today.

Long and Short

Some stories stay with you forever, like the story behind your name, the first time you rode a bicycle without training wheels, the bedtime stories your grandmother told you, your first scar, your first love, and your first heartbreak. Then, there are stories of the world around us—stories of people, companies, and nations; of visionaries and skeptics; and of mistakes, resilience, and turning points. These stories shape the way we think about the world, about risk, and about money. This is where Groww Digest comes in. For the past eight years, every Sunday, Groww Digest has brought finance and investing to life through engaging, real-world stories, such as the one about pessimists versus optimists: Was Lord Kelvin right all along, or did the Wright brothers prove him wrong? Or the story from 1984 about good versus bad: When a polite bank robber made the world question, "Does charm excuse a crime?" Or when even experts failed to see the truth when a couple sold a $3.6 million fake painting. These stories were built to educate, entertain, and spark curiosity. They aren’t just about markets or numbers; they are about how the world works and how we, as investors, make sense of it. Now, 72 of the most loved stories from Groww Digest are available in this book.

Robert Wedderburn

The first-ever biography of the ultra-radical thinker Robert Wedderburn, from his native Jamaica to metropole London, by an award-winning historianRobert Wedderburn (1762–1834/5) was one of the most charismatic, irascible, and radical intellectuals of the eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Atlantic world. Born to an enslaved woman and a slavemaster in Jamaica, and moving in the radical working-class circles of London, Wedderburn made his name as a fiery political writer and orator—before dying, forgotten, in poverty. Among the few abolitionists bold enough to publicly call for the enslaved in the British West Indies to rise up and violently overthrow their colonial “masters,” Wedderburn was also among the most outspoken and—amid an increasingly repressive British establishment—dangerous advocates for domestic political reform and working-class rights. From award-winning scholar Ryan Hanley, this is the first full-length biography of a man increasingly recognized as central to Black radical political thought in the Revolutionary Atlantic. Tapping newly rediscovered sources, Hanley details Wedderburn’s extraordinary public and private life, explores the central influence of enslaved women on his political ideas, and offers fresh analysis of his contributions to British political thought and activism.
