Učitel na frontě
Vypuknutí války zastihlo Josefa Dudka na prázdninách po absolvování 3. ročníku učitelského ústavu. Prvním odvodem však kvůli oční vadě neprošel a mohl dostudovat. Ztráty na bojištích ale rostly, takže v létě 1915 nastoupil vojenskou službu i on. Oční vada již nebyla překážkou. Byl poslán do Rakouska k důstojnickému výcviku. Zde se poprvé setkal s protičeským postojem některých nadřízených i kolegů. V lednu 1916 odjel na východní frontu, kde se záhy zranil, načež ho ale podezírali ze simulace. Již v květnu tak byl poslán na frontu do Itálie. V létě se však opět stěhoval na východ, kde bylo potřeba zastavit ruskou ofenzivu. V dubnu 1917 se vrátil na italskou frontu. Všude se ale setkával s nekompetentností a laxností nadřízených důstojníků a jejich rostoucí nedůvěrou ke všemu českému. V květnu 1917 ho zajali Italové. V zajetí se seznámil s myšlenkou boje za čs. samostatnost. Tyto zkušenosti ho – spolu s rostoucím nepřátelstvím německých a maďarských kolegů – nakonec zavedly do řad čs. vojska, s jehož 34. střeleckým plukem prodělal slavný boj na Doss Altu a válku o Slovensko v létě 1919.
