Outsider Everywhere

In August 1939, a ship flying the Polish flag docked in Buenos Aires. On board was a delegation of businessmen, diplomats and journalists. Days later, the captain received orders to return home with all crew and passengers in light of the imminent outbreak of the Second World War. But one man, fascinated by the city, chose to stay at the very last minute. Thus began the unexpected twenty-four-year Argentine exile of one of the twentieth century’s major writers: Witold Gombrowicz. Drawing on his writings and interviews with surviving disciples, writers and scholars, Mercedes Halfon’s Outsider Everywhere traces Gombrowicz’s Argentine years in elegant, pared-back prose, and composes a vivid account of mid-century bohemia in Buenos Aires. Brilliantly translated by Rahul Bery, Mercedes Halfon’s Outsider Everywhere is a gripping portrait of a literary figure on the margins who rose to prominence late in life to become ‘one of the greatest novelists of our century’ (Milan Kundera).

Bumping Into Geniuses

Step inside the rock ‘n’ roll world with this all-access pass from the music biz legend who collaborated with Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Stevie Nicks, Bruce Springsteen, and more. In Bumping into Geniuses, Danny Goldberg chronicles his decades in the rock and roll biz—not only launching legendary acts to greater heights, but becoming friends with many of them. He tells mesmerizing stories of superstars like Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, Bruce Springsteen, Warren Zevon, KISS, Led Zeppelin, and others. There may be no other music genre that has evolved like rock and roll. One man behind the scenes who has been hugely influential in defining it is Danny Goldberg, who started as a journalist in the ’60s but soon pivoted to become the American publicist for Led Zeppelin. He then became the personal manager for artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Nicks, Sonic Youth, the Allman Brothers Band, and Nirvana. More than a series of brilliantly painted rock-star portraits, this updated edition unpacks the last half century of the industry itself: an everchanging business that was complex and chaotic, a mixture of art and commerce, idealism and selfishness. And in the telling, Goldberg reveals how rock’s most gifted and influential musicians were able to release music which endures decades later. Originally published in 2008, the 2026 edition includes a new afterword by Goldberg with updated observations on the music business in the digital era, and rock culture in general as well as new anecdotes about several of the “geniuses” he worked with.

1996

“Dominic clearly remembers more about the 90s than I do.” – Zoe Ball I was in the right place at exactly the right time. I was handed a precious backstage pass to this magical period, as a chronicler of some of its most significant moments, of its wild protagonists, whether in music, entertainment, fashion, football, art or politics. I had a front-row seat for that insane decade, but it was 1996 that was the period’s stunning apex. Oasis at Maine Road and Knebworth, the births of Robbie Williams the solo star and the Spice Girls, the Euro 96 football tournament and ‘Three Lions’, the rise of New Labour and Tony Blair. I was there for the lot. 1996. Britpop ruled the airwaves. The tabloids framed reality long before Instagram.Football was finally coming home. Tony Blair was learning to play rock star – and rock stars were learning they could play politics. Everyone was partying hard, and Britain was the coolest place on earth. Showbiz reporter Dominic Mohan wasn’t watching the party from afar – he was in the room. Backstage at Knebworth with Oasis. In strip clubs with Robbie Williams. On the phone to Bowie. On the receiving end of Spice Girls gossip, Gallagher gobbiness and tabloid-era chaos. From Euro ’96 euphoria to Brit Awards anarchy, from rave culture to New Labour, Mohan witnessed the moment the UK went from scruffy indie island to global cultural powerhouse. Part memoir, part cultural autopsy and part riotous tour through the 90s and its greatest year, 1996 is a jaw-dropping front-row seat to the madness, the music, the football, and the politics that reshaped Britain – and created legends along the way. Three decades on, Mohan returns to the year everything peaked, and asks: what the hell happened, why did it matter, and can it ever happen again? If you were there – this book will feel like going home. If you weren’t – you’ll wish you had been.

Mary Penfold: The true story of the great Australian winemaker, from the bestselling award-winning author of SISTER VIV and MR AND MRS GOULD

The inspiring story of Mary Penfold, the mother of the Australian wine industry - a self-taught vintner and business genius who emigrated to a frontier settlement and built her family's small vineyard into one of the world's most respected winemakers Bestselling author and biographer Grantlee Kieza turns his focus to the birth of the Australian wine industry and the mother, business leader and pioneering vintner Mary Penfold, who grew her garden vineyard into a world renowned wine empire. Closely related to one of the world's wealthiest families, Mary was a new mother when she packed up her baby daughter and left all the comforts of her seaside home in England in 1844 to follow her husband Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold as he chased his dream of starting a new life in the infant colony of South Australia. Mary and Christopher settled on a farm in the Adelaide Hills, and as Christopher made his rounds visiting patients on horseback, Mary and her maid Ellen Timbrell tended grapevines that the Penfolds had sourced from the south of France and planted in the garden beside their stone cottage, which they named The Grange. At first the wines Mary made were used as tonics for Christopher's patients, but at a time when women were often excluded from commerce and given little recognition for their business endeavours, Mary transformed her cottage industry into an empire. She expanded her vineyard, developed new styles of her product and built a flourishing company that supplied not only Australia's demand for high quality wine, but thirsty export markets as well. Wine had been part of the Australian landscape since the First Fleet delivered vines along with the convicts and free settlers to Sydney Cove in 1788, and 'The Commander in Chief', as Mary was affectionately known, helped make the Australian wine industry the envy of the world. Riding her white mare and using her spy glass among the vines to oversee her creation, her brilliance as a vintner and great business mind lives on today with Penfolds Grange being one of the most sought after wines in the world. PRAISE'An uplifting tale of dreams and resolution ... A life as rich as the wines Mary worked so hard to make' Sydney Morning Herald'An inspiring portrait .. Inherit the Truth

Told in her own words, this is the incredible true story of one young woman's survival of Auschwitz and Belsen because she happened to play the cello. With a new foreword by Philippe Sands. Although my head was shaved and I had a number on my arm, I had not lost my identity totally. I may no longer have had a name, but I was identifiable . I was 'the cellist'. When eighteen-year-old Anita arrived at Auschwitz, she found herself plucked from the Nazi death machine by a twist of fate: she played the cello, and the camp orchestra needed a cellist. Now the last living survivor of the Auschwitz Women's Orchestra, this is her story told in her own words. Like so many German Jewish schoolgirls, Anita had been busy with her studies and ambitions when her everyday life began to turn by degrees into one of unimaginable horror. School was cancelled, her parents were summoned for deportation, and when she and her sister, Renate, attempted to escape to France, they were arrested and imprisoned. Through her sharp-etched memories, alongside family letters, photos, and other historical documents, Inherit the Truth leads us into one of humanity's darkest chapters, where we are forced to confront the fragility of the line between civilisation and barbarity. Marking the eightieth anniversary of her arrival in the UK after her release from Belsen concentration camp, and with a new introduction by Philippe Sands, Anita's account of her and her sister's survival of both Auschwitz and Belsen is a testament to their remarkable courage, resilience, ingenuity and luck. The Comeback

'An irresistible biography' Evening StandardIt remains the greatest comeback in music history. The Lazarus-like saga of Elvis Presley’s fall and rise, from Army discharge through Sixties Hollywood hell to divine black-leather resurrection. As 1968 dawns, the once ‘King’ of rock’n’roll faces cultural oblivion, a fading star lost in a 24/7 delirium of women, pills and holy mumbo-jumbo, isolated from an America unravelling in its own chaos of war, racism, riots and assassinations. Until, against all odds, his world and theirs collide in the performance of his life. First published four years before Baz Luhrmann’s dramatisation of events in the Oscar-nominated 2022 biopic Elvis, Simon Goddard’s The Comeback is no less a vividly cinematic, pelvic-thrusting blockbuster. This Remastered edition includes a foreword from musician and journalist Bob Stanley.

Breaking Waves

A warm, reflective and uplifting memoir about healing wounds, reclaiming a voice and discovering freedom through the open water. The open water. To the uninitiated, it represents the unknown, an expanse of mystery and uncertainty. But to those who brave the wild waters, it is so much more. A space to heal. A place of communion. A balm to quieten the mind, soothe the soul, and allow you to reconnect with the world and yourself. Emma Simpson discovered wild swimming after a period of immense pain. Whether describing the taste of an iceberg or a kiss from a baby whale, Breaking Waves is a love letter to womanhood and the open water. It's also a celebration of community, renewal and the power of writing your own life story. Above all else, it is a joyous celebration of going with the flow. The Green Hill

‘Remarkable. Will be a great comfort to those who need it’ Sarah PerryIn 2017, Sophie Pierce’s world changed forever when her twenty-year-old son Felix died suddenly and unexpectedly. Thrown into this new reality, she had to find a way to keep on living. By writing a series of letters to Felix – composed during walks and swims taken close to his burial place by the River Dart – Sophie gradually learned how to dwell in the landscape of sudden loss, navigating the weather and tides of grief. The Green Hill collects these letters alongside Sophie’s account of the years following Felix’s death, into which she weaves poignant memories of his life. What results is a deeply moving, beautifully captured record of how – amid the plants and rivers of Dartmoor, and in the sea off the South Devon coast – Sophie was able to hold on to and nurture her bond with Felix, both in her mind and through a physical engagement with the landscape: actively mourning, rather than grieving. The book is a celebration of the natural world and the role it plays in our lives and relationships, as well as examining how beauty, a sense of place and the passing seasons can help us contend with our own mortality. Above all, though, The Green Hill is one woman’s story of navigating through trauma and loss, and towards a fragile, complicated kind of joy.

The Patchwork Girl

They degraded her to the point where she'd become this sex thing - this thing that wasn't human, but an object - to the point where she believed that's what she was. The world of abuse and grooming gangs couldn't have seemed further away from Kate's start in life but, as so many young women now know, that matters little. As Sir Keir Starmer's national inquiry into grooming gangs begins, victims from across the country will share the stories of how they were targeted and their lives ruined. For Kate it was a situation that came out of the blue when, aged 18 and at college, her home life deteriorated and she found herself in supported housing for homeless teenagers in Telford. That's where she came into contact with an Asian gang who were grooming young girls for sex. One of the gang, who'd recently come out of prison, forced his way in and raped her before dragging her to a flat next door which the gang used for sex with underage girls, to publicly humiliate her in front of his friends. They threatened her with violence if she went to the police. It was the beginning of a cycle of serial and brutal abuse and rape that is almost impossible to imagine. She suffered mentally with PTSD being passed around between more than 70 men and taken to Morocco as a sex slave. Kate finally was able to report the abuse and some of the gang members were tried and sent to prison. Kate became a Mental Health Nurse in a secure unit in forensic mental health, which ironically includes working with sex offenders. She's become highly skilled in what she does, having an in-depth and first-hand knowledge of the thought processes of groomers.

Zvládli sme to, chlapče

Možno zabudneme na minulosť, ale minulosť nezabudne na nás Sir Anthony Hopkins sa narodil a vyrastal v krízových a vojnových časoch vo waleskom oceliarskom mestečku Port Talbot. Vychovávali ho v prostredí tvrdých chlapov, ktorí svoju citovú labilitu utápali v alkoholizme a brutalite. Vo svojej biografii úprimne, typicky strhujúcim a zároveň zraniteľným tónom, spomína na početné profesionálne míľniky a dáva nám nahliadnuť do zákulisia viacerých svojich najikonickejších rolí. Monsters in the Archives

After Caroline Bicks was named the University of Maine's inaugural Stephen E. King Chair in Literature, she became the first scholar to be granted extended access by King to his private archives, a treasure trove of manuscripts that document the legendary writer's creative process - most of them never before studied or published. The year she spent exploring King's early drafts and hand-written revisions was guided by one question millions of King's enthralled and terrified readers (including her) have asked themselves: What makes Stephen King's writing stick in our heads and haunt us long after we've closed the book? Bicks focuses on five of his most iconic early works - The Shining, Carrie, Pet Sematary, 'Salem's Lot, and Night Shift--to reveal how he crafted his language, storylines, and characters to cast his enduring literary spells. While tracking King's margin notes and editorial changes, she discovered scenes and alternative endings that never made it to print, but that King is allowing her to publish now. The book also includes interviews Bicks had with King along the way that reveal new insights into his writing process and personal history. Part literary master class, part biography, part memoir and investigation into our deepest anxieties, Monsters in the Archives - authorized by Stephen King himself - is unlike anything ever published about the master of horror. It chronicles what Bicks found when she set out to unearth how King crafted some of his scariest, most iconic moments. But it's also a story about a grown-up English professor facing her childhood fears and getting to know the man whose monsters helped unleash them.

Absolútne prvou biografiou všetkých čias je zrejme Excellentium Imperatorum Vitae, ktorú napísal grék Cornelius Nepos a opisoval v nej životy viacerých gréckych vojenských generálov.

Pri biografickej literatúre to platí stonásobne, pretože v ruke držíme príbeh reálneho človeka, z ktorého môžeme čerpať mnoho inšpirácie a tipov.
