Rychtář z Milčic na Poděbradsku František Jan Vavák (17411816) byl největší z českých písmáků, osobitých autorů ze selského prostředí, kteří v období národního obrození uchovávali lidový jazyk příštím pokolením. Vavák patří k buditelům "první generace", jejímž nejvýznamnějším představitelem byl Josef Dobrovský a která se sdružovala kolem Krameriova vydavatelství Česká expedice. Připomenout jeho duchovní odkaz a velikost jeho osobnosti si klade za cíl tato kniha. Její úvodní část tvoří edice Vavákova nedokončeného Vlastního životopisu, kterou v 70. letech připravila Stanislava Jonášová. Druhá část zahrnuje výběr reprezentativních ukázek z jeho Pamětí, vydaných knižně v rozpětí let 19072009. Třetí částí jsou ukázky z Vavákovy veršované a písňové tvorby, dosud souborně knižně nevydané. Knihu uzavírá studie profesora Františka Kutnara o písmácké literatuře, publikovaná zatím pouze v samizdatovém sborníku k osmdesátinám historika Zdeňka Kalisty. Publikaci připravil k vydání editor závěrečného svazku Vavákových Pamětí Martin Kučera (vydaného v r. 2009 Nakladatelstvím Karolinum).

Netypická monografia významného spisovateľa, ktorý má aj na Slovensku svojich verných čitateľov. Bärbel Reetz – skúsená autorka životopisov sa zamerala nielen na Hesseho tvorbu a život, ale najväčší dôraz v jej knihe hrajú ženy v blízkosti Hesseho – manželky, milenky, priateľky. Spisovateľ bol o sebe presvedčený, že sa do manželského vzťahu nehodí, vždy sa mu snažil vyhnúť, ale napriek tomu sa mu „podarilo“ oženiť trikrát. Pútavo napísaná monografia je teda rozdelená do troch častí, rámcovo oddelená manželstvami, ale autorka sa nevyhýba ani ďalším Hesseho známostiam a vzťahom. Čitateľ, ktorý pozná jeho diela, má konečne šancu lepšie ich pochopiť a tým aj samotného autora. Autorka sa však vôbec nesnaží Hesseho idealizovať, skôr naopak, občas je k nemu až prísna (napriek tomu, že ho vníma veľmi pozitívne) a prezrádza z jeho súkromia aj to nepríjemné a drsné. Na knihe je vidieť, že téme sa autorka venovala niekoľko rokov a dôkladne študovala dostupné archívy, konzultovala so znalcami, či žijúcou rodinou. Aj preto má publikácia množstvo dobových fotografií, menný index a kalendárium, ktoré sme prevzali z prvého nemeckého vydania (r. 2012). Preklad textu Elena Diamantová, preklad básní Marián Hatala. Dalším těžištěm je mu doba tzv. normalizace po roce 1970, jež se obou protagonistů citelně dotkla, a posléze vzrušená etapa po roce 1989, v němž jeden jako druhý sehráli nikoliv nevýznamnou roli v nápravě minulých deformací, oceněnou z nejvyšších míst. Lakonicky úsporné vyprávění oživují a probarvují střípky intimních vzpomínek a zážitky z cest, za nichž kromě rekreace získávali cenné podněty pro svou badatelskou práci.
