Předkládaný výbor obsahuje dvanáct povídek, jejichž ústředním tématem je líčení atmosféry před zatčení, pobytu ve věznicích, transportu a života v tá¬borech GULAGu. Autor mistrně propojuje perspektivu vlastního pro¬žitku s příběhy konkrétních jedinců postižených masovým zatý¬káním a terorem, stejně jako s příběhy těch, kteří se na této státem orga¬nizované mašinérii aktivně podíleli. Úvahy o mechanismech moci, útlaku a likvidaci obětí snesou srovnání s díly klasiků žánru – A. I. Solženicyna či V. Šalamova.
Ruského spisovatele a obránce lidských práv Lva Emmanuiloviče Razgona (1908–1999) zatkly sovětské orgány v dubnu 1938 a o dva měsíce později byl odsouzen k pěti letům nápravných prací. V roce 1943 byl propuštěn, nicméně brzy přišla druhá vlna zatýkání: v roce 1950 putoval opět do vězení, tentokrát za „protisovětskou agitaci“ s desetiletým trestem. Justin Václav Prášek a Bedřich Hrozný
Publikace, jež vznikla při příležitosti výročí 100 let české staroorientalistiky v roce 2019, přináší dosud neuveřejněné dokumenty týkající se dvou ústředních postav počátků českého klínopisného bádání Justina V. Práška a Bedřicha Hrozného. Na základě archivních dokladů, dochované korespondence i dobových článků lze rekonstruovat nejen Práškovu trnitou cestu na poli staroorientálních studií, ale i atmosféru akademického prostředí na konci 19. století. Ačkoliv svými studiemi a mnoha publikacemi Prášek prokázal mimořádný rozhled v oblasti staroorientálních dějin, přehled o původních pramenech i nejnovější zahraniční literatuře a byl bezesporu přední postavou tohoto oboru u nás, promítaly se do jeho životních osudů spory mezi jinými akademiky a jeho opakované pokusy a žádosti o habilitaci byly mařeny. Až jeho žáku Bedřichu Hroznému se o mnoho let později podařilo založit ústav klínopisného bádání a dějin starého Orientu na Filozofické fakultě v Praze.

Monografie je komplementem ke svazku Dopisů (ed. Michal Topor, 2019), je věnována dráze muže, jenž se narodil roku 1889 jako Arnošt/Ernst Lustig, v letech 1907-1916 se profiloval pod různými pseudonymy (mj. jako Arne Laurin) jako literární, výtvarný a divadelní kritik, překladatel, básník a prozaik, zprvu na stránkách periodik spjatých s prostředím studentského spolkového života, posléze zejména v českožidovském týdeníku Rozvoj, v jičínských Pokrokových listech, v satirických Kopřivách, dále v Samostatnosti, Národním obzoru, anarchistické Zádruze, Horkého Stopě, revui Divadlo, v deníku Národní politika, již během války v českožidovských Českých listech (resp. Českém listu). Přátelil se mj. s Jaroslavem Haškem či Egon Erwinem Kischem. Narukovat musel definitivně v roce 1916, zbytek války poté strávil jednak v maďarských lazaretech, v roce 1918 potom ve vídeňském Kriegspressequartieru jako redaktor časopisu Domov (a přímý podřízený Roberta Musila). V r. 1919 se Lustig stal zástupcem Bedřicha Hlaváče jakožto šéfredaktora deníku Tribuna (sedával v místnosti s F. Peroutkou), v závěru r. 1920 byl přizván k přípravě deníku Prager Presse, jejž nakonec v letech 19211938 řídil (od r. 1927 i z pozice redaktora zodpovědného, už i úředně jako Arne Laurin). V listopadu 1938 mu byla správní radou Orbisu vypovězena smlouva, v lednu 1939 zamířil do Francie, odtud lodí do New Yorku, s nímž byl jak se ukázalo spojen zbytek jeho dráhy a působení, zacíleného vedle podílu na provozu New Yorských listů především k organizaci mohutného zpravodajského archivu (pod střechou československého konzulátu). Urnu s popelem svého muže přivezla Olga Laurinová do Prahy počátkem r. 1946, byla uložena v hrobě na Olšanských hřbitovech.

Konečně jsme se dostali na pódium, asi o dvacet minut později, podívali se do davu pokud se to tak dá nazvat a tam byli úplně vepředu všichni moji kámoši a pokřikovali na mě: ,Čááááu, Hoooky. Jak to jde, Hooky?´ Culili se na mě a zdvihali palce. Pomyslel jsem si, že je fajn, že se ukázali, ale ty úsměvy a palce si mohli odpustit. My v Joy Division jsme byli velice vážní. Spíš jsme preferovali mračení se. Těmito slovy líčí první koncert Joy Division Peter Hook, basák a autor této knihy. V jeho autobiografii se čtenář samozřejmě ale dozví i to, co předcházelo i co následovalo, tedy jak vznikla skupina Warsaw Pakt a proč se přejmenovala na Joy Division, jaké byly další koncerty a co zapříčinilo smrt Iana Curtise.

Kniha se věnuje dnes nepříliš známé osobnosti Ericha Ludendorffa, jednoho z nejvlivnějších německých vojenských představitelů za první světové války, který byl do značné míry zodpovědný za neúprosné vedení bojů plynoucích z přehnaných ambic německých představitelů, které zapříčinily vysoké ztráty na životech. Autoři sledují počátky jeho kariéry, úspěch v bitvě u Lutychu, spolupráci s Hindenburgem i nezdařené ofenzívy provázené diplomatickými skandály. Ludendorff byl vlivným šiřitelem konspiračních teorií a uvedl do oběhu legendu o ráně do zad, podle níž Německo nebylo poraženo, nýbrž zrazeno Židy. Autoři představují Ludendorffa coby muže, jenž dodal vznikajícímu nacistickému hnutí legitimitu a nasměroval Německo do další světové války. Nejde o tradiční životopis, autoři se soustředí na vybrané okamžiky Ludendorffova působení a zasazují je do širšího kontextu evropského dění.

Eliška Vozábová, šestá lékařka v Čechách, během své kariéry dosáhla v oboru mnohých prvenství a v bílém plášti strávila 60 let života. Milada Horáková se v letech 1924-1940 hlásila k feminismu, po válce se od něj distancovala, třebaže nadále o rovnoprávnost žen usilovala. Františka Plamínková si v červnu 1942 mohla zachránit život, kdyby po heydrichiádě veřejně odsoudila londýnskou emigraci. Než zradit národ, rozhodla se pro smrt. Víc říká krátký doplněk k jejímu životopisu, který byl i filmově zpracován.
