Tři životy českého jogína… a život po nich 1: 1925–1968
Karel Werner byl český indolog, orientalista a religionista. Werner navštěvoval gymnázia v Brně a ve Znojmě, po maturitě v roce 1945 studoval sanskrt, filozofii, historii a sinologii na Masarykově univerzitě v Brně a na Univerzitě Palackého v Olomouci. Poté vyučoval čtyři roky sanskrt a dějiny Indie na Univerzitě Palackého, než byl pro svůj kritický postoj ke komunistické vládě propuštěn. Poté byl nucen patnáct let pracovat jako horník, dělník v plynárně, vedoucí restauračních zařízení, řidič tramvaje aj. V roce 1968 emigroval do Británie. Byl přijat do řádu Arya Maitreya Mandala lamou Anagarikou Govindou pod jménem Vadžrabuddhi.
V Británii přednášel sanskrt na Churchill College na univerzitě v Cambridge, od roku 1969 do odchodu do důchodu v roce 1990 pak vyučoval indickou filozofii na Durhamské univerzitě. Toto působení bylo přerušeno hostujícími profesurami v Indii v letech 1975 a 1976, kde vyučoval na Banaras Hindu University ve Váránasí a na Karnatak University v Dharwadu. Hostoval také na univerzitách v Cambridgi, Oxfordu, Lancastru, Manchesteru, Stirlingu a Londýně. V letech 1993–1998 se jako hostující profesor na Masarykově univerzitě v Brně podílel na založení Ústavu religioniostiky.
V roce 1970 se Karel Werner oženil s wimbledonskou hráčkou Marian Boundyovou, provd. Wernerovou, editorkou obou svazků jeho autobiografie.
Kromě akademické pedagogické činnosti byl Karel Werner autorem řady knih a překladů, zejména o hinduismu, buddhismu a józe. Mezi nejznámější patří Hathajoga. Základy tělesných cvičení jogických, Jóga a indická filosofie, Dědictví véd, Jóga, její počátky a vývoj, Náboženství jižní a východní Asie, Náboženské tradice Asie a další.
Karel Werner se zabýval výzkumem védských hymnů, zejména pokud obsahují filosofické ideje nebo předjímají vznik jógy, a jejich původem v indoevropském dávnověku. Sledoval též vývoj jógické a buddhisticlé duchovní praxe a otázku znovuzrozování v indických naukách a v evropském myšlení. V této souvislosti se několikrát zabýval otázkou povahy osobnosti ve védech, upanišadách a v buddhismu. V době působení na Filosofické fakultě Masarykovy univerzity (1993–1998) se věnoval na popud členů Ústavu religionistiky vypracování přehledných studií všech hlavních asijských náboženských tradic, které byly vydány pro studenty Masarykovou universitou (a později v přepracování pro veřejnost v komerčních nakladatelstvích). Je autorem mnoha studií v českém, především anglickém a spoře v německém jazyce.
