Year of Yes (10th Anniversary Edition)

In this 10th-anniversary edition of Shonda Rhimes' poignant, hilarious and confessional call-to-arms, Hollywood's most powerful woman – executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Bridgerton, Queen Charlotte and more– revisits her galvanizing New York Times bestseller and reveals the continuing power that saying YES has had on her life, and how it can change yours too. With three hit shows on television and three children at home, Shonda Rhimes had lots of good reasons to say no when invitations arrived. Hollywood party? No. Speaking engagement? No. Media appearances? No. And to an introvert like Shonda, who describes herself as 'hugging the walls' at social events and experiencing panic attacks before press interviews, there was a particular benefit to saying no: nothing new to fear. Then came Thanksgiving 2013, when Shonda's sister Delorse muttered six little words at her: You never say yes to anything. Profound, impassioned and laugh-out-loud funny, in Year of YesShonda Rhimes reveals how saying YES changed – and saved – her life. And inspires readers everywhere to change their own lives with one little word: Yes. In this celebratory and expanded anniversary edition, you’ll find more wildly candid and transformational chapters that reveal how the mega-talented Shonda, once a self-described introvert, achieved badassery worthy of a Shondaland character – and how you can, too. In Shonda’s own words, ‘This book is the same as before, but it also is not. It is brand-new. It has changed. Transformed. Evolved. Grown. Just like me.’

The Heart-Shaped Tin

Winner of the André Simon Food Book Award Shortlisted for the Fortnum & Mason Food Book Award ‘Extraordinary’ TELEGRAPH ? 'Delightful' GUARDIAN 'Bee Wilson is one of my favourite writers and this may be her best book' CHRIS VAN TULLEKEN This strikingly original account from award-winning food writer Bee Wilson charts how everyday objects take on deeply personal meanings in all our lives. One ordinary day, the tin in which Bee Wilson baked her wedding cake fell to the ground at her feet. This should have been unremarkable, except that her marriage had just ended. Unsettled by her own feelings about the heart-shaped tin, Wilson begins a search for others who have attached strong and even magical meanings to kitchen objects. She meets people who deal with grief or pain by projecting emotions onto certain objects, whether it is a beloved parent’s salt shaker, a cracked pasta bowl or an inherited china dinner service. Remembering her own mother, a dementia sufferer, she explores the ways that both of them have been haunted by deciding which kitchen utensils to hold on to and which to get rid of when you think you are losing your mind. Looking to different continents, cultures and civilisations to investigate the full scope of this phenomenon, Wilson blends her own experiences with a series of touching personal stories that reflect the irrational and fundamentally human urge to keep mementos. Why would a man trapped in a concentration camp decide to make a spoon for himself? Why do some people hoard? What do gifts mean? How do we decide what is junk and what is treasure? We see firsthand how objects can contain hidden symbols, keep the past alive and even become powerful symbols of identity and resistance; from a child’s first plate to a refugee’s rescued vegetable corers. Thoughtful, tender and beautifully written, The Heart-Shaped Tin is a moving examination of love, loss, broken cups and the legacy of things we all leave behind. ‘With candour and intelligence, Wilson highlights how the props of domestic life become markers of the progress of our lives, but more movingly she probes that it’s possible to recover from heartache with gusto’ The Times & Sunday Times Books of the Year 2025 ‘Fascinating and also tender’ Diana Henry ‘This beautifully written book about the deep significance of certain objects in our kitchen – is nothing less than an intense, compassionate expression of the human condition … Both intimate and expansive, The Heart-Shaped Tin is a book I know I’ll give, urgently and importantly, to those I love’ Nigella Lawson ‘Very few food writers can do what Bee does. It made me think again – and with more tenderness – about the kitchen objects that I ordinarily take for granted. These are the human stories embedded in our material culture, and Bee brings them effortlessly to life’ Ruby Tandoh 'Heart-wrenching and heart-warming in equal measure. No one is so good at capturing the everyday magic of kitchens, cooking and life as Bee Wilson' Letitia Clark ‘Bee Wilson has changed the landscape of the kitchen by breathing life into ordinary objects. Through this remarkable book you will find yourself discovering meaning in plates, sadness in spoons, love in a measuring cup. I want to give this book to every cook I know’ Ruth Reichl 'A moving and fascinating exploration of the vital role played by household objects in our love of home and family' Sophie Hannah

Abraham

The story of Abraham, the first Jew, portrayed as two lives lived by one person, paralleling the contradictions in Judaism throughout its history   In this new biography of Abraham, Judaism’s foundational figure, Anthony Julius offers an account of the origins of a fundamental struggle within Judaism between skepticism and faith, critique and affirmation, thinking for oneself and thinking under the direction of another. Julius describes Abraham’s life as two separate lives, and as a version of the collective life of the Jewish people.   Abraham’s first life is an early adulthood of questioning the polytheism of his home city of Ur Kasdim until its ruler, Nimrod, condemns him to death and he is rescued, he believes, by a miracle. In his second life, Abraham’s focus is no longer on critique but rather on conversion and on his leadership over his growing household, until God’s command that he sacrifice his son Isaac. This test, the Akedah (or “Binding”), ends with another miracle, as he believes, but as Julius argues, it is also a catastrophe for Abraham. The Akedah represents for him an unsurpassed horizon—and in Jewish life thereafter. This book focuses on Abraham as leader of the first Jewish project, Judaism, and the unresolvable, insurmountable crisis that the Akedah represents—both in his leadership and in Judaism itself.

Ring of Salt: Finding home and hope on the Wild Coast of Ireland

On her son's first birthday, Betsy Cornwell fled her home, checking into a hotel under a false name so her husband couldn't find them. In the uncertain months that followed, her fierce determination to give her child what she never had - a safe and stable home - saved them. In Ring of Salt, Betsy traces her journey from that desperate moment to Ireland's windswept west coast, where the Atlantic Ocean crashes against ancient cliffs. There, nestled beside a quiet lake in the wilds of Connemara, she discovers a long-abandoned knitting factory - forgotten, but full of possibility. She sets out to restore it into a sanctuary for herself and her son - and, eventually, a creative refuge for single mothers. As she renovates the crumbling house and fights to keep custody of her son, Betsy begins to rebuild something more: a sense of belonging. In the cool mists of the countryside, and with the help of fellow survivors and an unexpected community, she pieces together a new kind of family. Mixing Maid's gripping portrait of single motherhood with Wintering's wild, romantic sense of place, this is a powerful memoir of survival, new beginnings, and the quiet, everyday magic of finding home on one of the world's most storied and soul-stirring coastlines.

The Bigger Picture

Jon Landau, the Academy Award-winning film producer behind Titanic, Avatar, Alita: Battle Angel, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, and Dick Tracy, knew two things well: how to tell an unforgettable story and how to find solutions. In his retrospective and advice-driven memoir, Landau shares behind-the-scenes stories about some of the greatest movies of our time and advice on how to live well while working in a notoriously all-consuming job by centring the things that mattered to him most - his love for his family and his dedication to his friends and creative partners - turning his own story into another blockbuster hit. Mockers

Mockers is a nostalgic love story that explores teenage passions and societal pressures in the sixties. Although the story begins and concludes in late 2024, Mockers is a fictional novel set in North London and Hertfordshire, in post-war Britain between 1963 and 1966. It reflects a period when teenagers born in the 1940s and early 1950s felt separated from those who had been involved in the Second World War. In the early 1960s, this disconnect led to the development of a counterculture, expressed in popular music, fashion, and rebellion. At the heart of that culture were two groups of teenagers: Mods and Rockers. The story centres around a love triangle between a young, ambitious girl, Judy, who falls in love with a Rocker, Jimmy, and then, after an interlude in Ireland, falls in love with a Mod, Terry. Some very strong messages and issues of the time are highlighted, particularly relating to education, ambition, opportunities, society and female emancipation after the Second World War. But essentially, it's about Mods and Rockers; two wheels, speed, testosterone, aggression, music and the fashion that connected young people experiencing freedom and rebellion. It marked an era that would dramatically shape the second half of the 20th century in the UK.

Blow by Blow

A contender for the G.O.A.T. - the greatest of all time - Jeff Beck left an indelible mark on rock history. His sudden loss in 2023 prompted an outpouring of grief and respect from his peers that only underlined his place in the pantheon of legendary guitar slingers. Not many could have filled the shoes of Eric Clapton in the Yardbirds, but for Beck it only marked the beginning of a trailblazing career that defied expectation and labels. From the wedding pop of Hi Ho Silver Lining through the ground-breaking proto-metal of the Jeff Beck Group, and from the landmark jazz rock recorded of the mid-seventies to the cutting-edge electronica of the 21st century Beck never stood still. Across it all, as he seemed to deliberately swerve the straitjacket of megastardom, his genius as an instrumentalist remained constant. In Blow by Blow, Brad Tolinski and Chris Gill provide fresh insight and understanding into life of one of rock's most enigmatic heroes. Drawing on nearly thirty hours of interviews with Beck himself, numerous conversations with those closest to him, and extensive new research, they shed light on the man and musician Jimmy Page once said had "shifted the whole sound and face of electric guitar music."

Looking After

I will not be the only sibling to appreciate Looking After. Our voices are seldom heard’ Spectator''Beautifully written, erudite and important . . . Sometimes an "ordinary" story is anything but . . . Looking After is never dry - Lionel’s glorious, messy, infuriating humanity comes first. [Elton] wants to honour and celebrate her chicken-chomping, toiletry-slathering, transport-fixated brother and the mother who made his life possible’ The Times''Held me captive to the very last page. Wise, compassionate and compellingly told'' Monica Ali, author of LOVE MARRIAGE''This life-spanning memoir is an affecting and affectionate tribute'' Bookseller, Editor''s ChoiceMeet Lionel, Caroline’s older brother. Born in the late 1940s, when little was known about autism, Lionel was considered a peculiarity. From the beginning, he was a silent child, oblivious to the people around him and intent only on playing with his toy trucks. By the time he turned four, doctors declared him ineducable and advised that he be institutionalised – a shockingly standard practise at the time.No one could have predicted that Lionel would go onto music college and find his place in the world. With the help of his mother – who refused to send him away – Lionel lived a life that was certainly unusual but never dull. He had perfect pitch, could multiply three-figure numbers in his head, or work out which day of the week you were born on, the instant you told him your birthday. But when Lionel’s mother dies, and shortly after he is diagnosed with cancer, his two sisters struggle to fill the void – to become Lionel’s caretaker and support him as they had promised their mother. Looking After is both a portrait of one autistic man''s remarkable life, and a heart-rending story of how one family learnt to care for each other, to deal with loss and to be by each other’s side at the very end.

Twice Born

Twice Born opens with the death of Hester''s father, Justin Kaplan, known for his award-winning biographies of Mark Twain and Walt Whitman. Despite his relatively prolific output, Justin rarely wrote, or said, much about himself-even to his daughter. Standing at his open casket, Hester has the realisation that while alive, her father never looked her in the eyes. Hester takes on the challenge of piecing together as intimate a biography of her own father as possible, comparing his story to the lives of his biographical subjects and dissecting the various personas he presents to the world-from which the name ''dad,'' ''daddy,'' or even ''father'' is conspicuously and painfully absent. Parallel to Justin''s story runs Hester''s own journey of development as a writer and a thinker, which begins in the shadow of not only her talented father, but also her novelist mother, and the fiercely protective union the two of them had built, often to the exclusion of their own children. In sensitive, intimate writing, Kaplan paints a rich picture of the twentieth century literary world that she grew up in, all while reflecting on the deceptive nature of memory, the loneliness of creative pursuits, and the dovetailing paradoxes of biographical and autobiographical writing.

Identity Theft, Second Edition

Identity Theft, Second Edition is an award-winning book that follows Stanford professor Debra Meyerson’s journey to recover from a severe stroke that initially left her physically incapacitated and unable to speak. In addition to providing realistic expectations for the hard work needed to regain everyday capabilities, Meyerson and Zuckerman focus on the less frequently documented emotional journey as she and her family rebuild identity in recovery.  Virtually every stroke survivor is haunted by questions like “Who am I now?” and “How do I rebuild a meaningful and rewarding life?” after losing so much of what they had before—capabilities, careers and jobs, relationships, and more. This is a book full of hope for survivors—from stroke or other life-changing injuries or illnesses—as well as their care partners, families, and communities.   The first edition of Identity Theft centers on Debra’s experience: her stroke, her extraordinary efforts to recover, and her journey to redefine herself. But she also draws on her skills as a social scientist, sharing stories from several dozen fellow survivors, family members, friends, colleagues, therapists, and doctors she has met and interviewed. By sharing this diversity of experiences, Debra highlights how every stroke is different and every recovery is different. She provides a valuable look at the broad possibilities for successfully navigating the challenging physical recovery—and the equally difficult and frequently unspoken emotional journey toward rebuilding one’s identity and a rewarding life after a trauma like stroke. This second edition is written by Debra and her husband, Steve Zuckerman. As they have shared in countless talks, “Just as the original book was headed to the printers, we decided that ‘the finish line had become a new starting line.’” They co-founded the nonprofit Stroke Onward, where they have been working side by side to build an organization that can catalyze change in the healthcare system to better integrate the emotional journey of rebuilding identity into a lifelong recovery process. This edition draws on five more years of experience as a post-stroke couple and what they’ve learned from thousands more survivors, family members, and healthcare professionals. They’ve added new insights about the long-term recovery process and how we can change the stroke system of care to better support all survivors and their families.    Their 4,500-mile bike ride called Stroke Across America in 2021 helped raise awareness for Stroke Onward and stroke suvivorship care.

The Bookseller of Hay

'A breathtakingly hilarious and absorbing portrait of one of the most brilliant, dotty, dippy delirious yet ultimately inspiring eccentrics in British history . . . A remarkable story of cultural life, friendship, obsession and passion' Stephen Fry'Brilliantly evocative, like listening to the gossip of ghosts' Bruce Robinson'The Bookseller of Hay is the very model of a biography which amazes, occasionally horrifies and entirely engrosses . . . James Hanning is a writer of sublime insight, style and skill' Horatio Clare'What you have to understand is that Richard Booth was completely mad' Marianne FaithfullIn 1962, a young man left university without a degree and, for want of anything better to do, bought a small shop in an obscure market town on the edge of the Brecon Beacons. Within fifteen years, largely through force of personality, Richard Booth had created the world's largest second-hand bookshop, attracting thousands of visitors from across the globe to Hay-on-Wye, on the Welsh border. The Bookseller of Hay tells the tale of an extraordinary, chaotic man, a true British eccentric, who invented the term 'book town', attracted a coterie of exotic and illustrious followers, crowned himself king, declared the town's independence and provided the bookish backdrop which - to his frustration - allowed a rival attraction, the now world-famous Hay Festival, to flourish. It is a story of the extraordinary singlemindedness of a hard-working, hard-playing and rebellious son of privilege, inspired by a romantic vision and a deep love of the area, of a man better suited to publicity than bean-counting, who launched countless careers but whose business instincts undermined precisely what had brought success. Booth was a deeply divisive figure, but love him or hate him, all agree on one thing. He put Hay on the map. James Hanning, a frequent visitor to Hay since the 1960s, has interviewed dozens of local people and booksellers and with typical acuity wonderfully captures this bygone era of eccentricity and excess.

Absolútne prvou biografiou všetkých čias je zrejme Excellentium Imperatorum Vitae, ktorú napísal grék Cornelius Nepos a opisoval v nej životy viacerých gréckych vojenských generálov.

Pri biografickej literatúre to platí stonásobne, pretože v ruke držíme príbeh reálneho človeka, z ktorého môžeme čerpať mnoho inšpirácie a tipov.
