A Writer's Story

‘Fiction is a form of disguise, certainly. But, more important, it is a way of telling your own stories through other people's lives.’ The author of more than thirty novels, published over fifty years, Rachel Billington is a natural storyteller. Now shifting the focus from her imagined characters to those who have been so vibrant and vital in her own life, Billington casts herself as protagonist in this honest memoir. Born in 1942, a war baby, fifth child of eight turbulent Pakenhams whose parents Frank and Elizabeth Longford left politics to become social reformer and biographer respectively, Billington was recorded by her mother as the ‘placid’ one. Stories of unexploded bombs, home-made cowboy films in which her role was to throw herself from her pony, merge into London convent, feisty nuns, smogs and friends, escape to an Irish island and an inherited Irish castle. Leaving a television job under a cloud, there come stories about her new life in New York, working on a documentary about drug addiction. After two years she meets her English film director husband, Kevin Billington, and the stories pass back to London, then Hollywood, New Orleans, London and Spain. Four children, the oldest continuously inhabited house in Dorset, and Billington’s adventures continue, taking her first into the writers’ organisation, PEN, eventually as President, and then into the dark world of British prisons, as she becomes Associate Editor and regular contributor to the national newspaper for prisons, Inside Time. A Writer’s Story is a collection of memories, told with wit and understanding, which not only reveals the inspiration behind many of Billington’s works of fiction but offers insight into the art and nature of writing.

Lightning Can Strike Twice

In his first book professional boxer and social media star, Tommy Fury, reveals what life is like juggling his many identities: boxing champion, TV star, mental health advocate, and father, and navigating the most difficult period of his life in August 2024."Since writing this book, some things have changed for me. In the last couple of weeks, I have felt like my voice has been taken away from me. I am really proud of my book and I wanted to give it as current an ending as it is possible. We were able to delay the first print run because I do have something to add and where better than here, a place where I can speak freely and feel safe."When Tommy Fury realised as a young boy that he wanted to become a boxer, the odds were stacked against him. His father was sent to prison when Tommy was only nine, casting his family life into chaos. He couldn''t afford a bus ticket to the gym to train, so he''d have to walk three hours instead. When he got there, everyone wanted to fight him - guys much older than him and twice his size - to say they could beat a Fury. In Lightning Can Strike Twice, Tommy Fury opens up about his incredible story - defying pressure and triumphing regardless of the weight of expectation on his shoulders - and the many sides to his life. He shares unfiltered stories about his experience on Love Island, candid insight into his life with Molly-Mae and as a father to their daughter Bambi, and a glimpse behind the scenes of what life is like as part of the UK''s most popular family - including never-before-seen personal photos.Tommy Fury wasn''t supposed to succeed. How could another champion come out of the family that had already produced Tyson Fury? In this open, honest memoir, Tommy shows that lightning can strike twice and that there''s more to being a Fury than knowing how to fight.

And So I Run

And So I Run is a story about running. Jamie Doward uses running as an escape, as a way to evade life’s most painful realities. As the marathon medals stack up, a new obsession creeps in – beating the clock, needing to run a time, a time that once attained would magically solve all of life’s problems. In a world where some self-medicate with alcohol or drugs, Jamie finds his solace in marathon running, each training run, each race, a desperate attempt to outrun depression, shame and a sense of failure. But And So I Run is more than just a story of a 26.2-mile obsession – it’s a celebration of life’s absurdities and an uplifting story about how Jamie redefined his relationship with running. Engaging and relatable, with the marathon at its heart, And So I Run speaks to all runners, offering a raw, witty and human exploration of how we cope, heal and sometimes keep on just putting one foot in front of the other.

It’s Not Banter, It’s Racism

This is the story of how one cricketer in Yorkshire started a nationwide conversation, putting a spotlight on a society riddled with bias.Green grass, blue skies, white flannels and the gentle thwack of leather on willow: the quintessential image of Englishness that heralds the start of the cricket season. A so-called gentleman''s game developed with the principle of fair play at its heart. All well and true - unless you''re a person of colour living in Britain today. Azeem Rafiq, the former Yorkshire cricketer and England youth captain, learnt this the hard way. When, on 16 November 2021, Azeem stood up and courageously spoke out about his experiences of racism at Yorkshire County Cricket Club he was coolly dismissed, told that it was "friendly banter" and that he was a troublemaker. The case blew up, and millions of people voiced their support for Azeem. It''s Not Banter, It''s Racism will provide a bracing look at the moments that led up to and defined the watershed meeting where Azeem shared his truth. As well as interviewing key figures involved in the case, Azeem illustrates how the continual denial of racism is sending us backwards as a society, and how pervasive polarisation has become. It is with great sensitivity and determination that Azeem will also unpack his own biases, while also building forgiveness and understanding with the communities he has impacted.Giving voice to the voiceless, Azeem''s book stands for accountability and honesty in a world that would prefer to cancel and silence.

To See Ourselves

Since 1945 the world has changed at breakneck speed, and life in post-war Scotland is now entirely different from what it was like when Alistair Moffat grew up in the quiet Border town of Kelso in the 1950s. At that time the rhythms and practicalities of daily life which had remained constant for many generations were about to change in the most unimaginable ways. This is a book about these changes – many of which have been dizzying and disorientating – and how they have affected each and every one of us in all parts of the country. The main themes, such as housing, healthcare, sport, the media, the arts and entertainment, urban and country life, our relationship with the environment, politics, religion and education, are all viewed through the lens of personal experience. Alistair’s own recollections of big events and small, together with other eyewitness accounts, bring these decades alive in a way that no ordinary history can with a directness and poignancy that underlines how much has been gained – and how much lost.

Anima Fatua

Winner English PEN Translates Award 2025?In Anima Fatua, Anna Lidia Vega Serova draws on her own experiences of growing up in the late Soviet Union to craft a deeply unsettling coming-of-age novel. In the wake of her parent’s divorce, Alia (the novel’s beguiling protagonist) is forced to negotiated her linguistic, racial and sexual otherness amid the maelstrom of perestroika. Despite the many horrors to which she is exposed, largely at the hands of the novel’s grim menagerie of male characters, Alia exerts her own agency at every turn. More antihero than tragic victim, Alia responds in kind to the cruelty around her. She confounds and enthrals as she leads us on a harrowing journey through a country on the brink.Originally published in Spanish to much acclaim in 2008, it has now been translated for the first time into English by Robin Munby – and has been awarded an English PEN Translates award. This is a story full of emotional intensity and dark humour, which in particular will appeal to readers of Margarita García Robayo, Ludmilla Petrushevskaya or Sayaka Murata, looking to delve back into world of complex, charismatic women.

The Friday Afternoon Club

THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER''Wise, funny and generous'' The Times''Warm and perceptive'' New York Times''So honest and funny and smart'' Observer''Griffin Dunne knows how to tell a story'' Washington Post''Dunne is a prospector for the incandescent detail'' Los Angeles Times''Full of light, life and colour...a startling tale of precarious American privilege, spotlighting a family that is blessed and cursed'' GuardianAt eight, Sean Connery saved him from drowning. At thirteen, desperate to hook up with Janis Joplin, he attended his aunt Joan Didion''s legendary LA launch party for Tom Wolfe''s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. In his early twenties, he shared a Manhattan apartment with his best friend and soulmate Carrie Fisher while she was filming some sci-fi movie called Star Wars and he was a struggling actor selling popcorn at Radio City Music Hall. A few years later, he produced and starred in the now-iconic film After Hours, directed by Martin Scorsese. In the midst of it all, Griffin''s twenty-two-year-old sister, Dominique, a rising star in Hollywood, was brutally strangled to death by her ex-boyfriend, leading to one of the most infamous public trials of the 1980s. The outcome was a travesty of justice that marked the beginning of their father Dominick Dunne''s career as a bestselling author of true crime narratives. And yet, for all its boldface cast of characters and jaw-dropping scenes, The Friday Afternoon Club is no mere celebrity memoir. It is, down to its bones, a family story that embraces the poignant absurdities and best and worst efforts of its loveable, infuriating, funny and moving characters - its author most of all.

The Power of Adrienne Rich

A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice“A comprehensive biography of . . . one of the most acclaimed poets of her generation and a face of American feminism.”—New York TimesA major American writer, thinker, and activist, Adrienne Rich (1929–2012) transformed herself from a traditional, Radcliffe-educated lyric poet and married mother of three sons into a path-breaking lesbian-feminist author of forceful, uncompromising prose as well as poetry. In doing so, she emerged as an architect and exemplar of the feminist movement, breaking ranks to denounce the male-dominated literary establishment and paving the way for women writers to take their places in the cultural mainstream. Drawing on a wealth of unpublished materials, including Rich’s correspondence and in-depth interviews with many people who knew her, Hilary Holladay provides a vividly detailed, full-dimensional portrait of a woman whose work and life continue to challenge and inspire new generations.

Tri saleziánske perly

Tieto krátke príbehy a osobné spomienky na troch vychovávateľov a pedagógov dona Andreja Šándora, dona Augustína Nádaského a dona Rudolfa Blatnického sú mozaikou udalostí a situácií z čias ich pôsobenia v Slovenskom ústave sv. Cyrila a Metoda.

Absolútne prvou biografiou všetkých čias je zrejme Excellentium Imperatorum Vitae, ktorú napísal grék Cornelius Nepos a opisoval v nej životy viacerých gréckych vojenských generálov.

Pri biografickej literatúre to platí stonásobne, pretože v ruke držíme príbeh reálneho človeka, z ktorého môžeme čerpať mnoho inšpirácie a tipov.

Nájdete tu biografie z oblasti biznisu, filmu a hudby, histórie, literatúry, športu, mafie a podsvetia, náboženstva, politiky, osobností vedy a umenia.
