British Atlantic Express Tender Locomotives
The British Atlantic locomotive flourished in the first decade of the nineteenth century especially on the relatively level stretches of the East Coast mainline. This book describes the design, construction, history, operation and performance of the Great Northern, Great Central, North Eastern and North British Atlantics and the London Brighton & South Coast engines that were developed from the GN design. More unusual were the Lancashire & Yorkshire ‘Highflyers’ which were some of the earliest and also included are the most powerful of all, Churchward’s Great Western Atlantics (converted to 4-6-0s later) and his three French Compounds. Most had been replaced by 4-6-0 and 4-6-2 designs by the 1920s and were withdrawn before the Second World War, though a few lingered to the post-war period and just reached the era of British Railways, though only the Brighton Atlantics survived longer. The last of all, 32424 Beachy Head, was withdrawn in 1958 and has been recreated for the Heritage industry. The book concludes with a brief look for comparative purposes at some of the most influential Atlantics on the rest of the world’s railways.

Diesel and Electric Motive Power on the Southern 1980s to Present
With the era of British Railways’ transition from steam to diesel and electric influencing the country-wide fleets of trains beyond the 1970’s, the Southern proved no exception to such, integrated within its flotillas of commuter electric trains. Southern Region motive power was territorial, thanks to the requirement for electric trains to remain within the live third rail network. Remaining pockets of non-electrified routes provided the last bastions of diesel-electric units and locomotive hauled trains, not only in Dorset, Sussex and Hampshire but also especially along the South West mainline to Exeter. Although with a limited range of Class 33, 47, 50 and 73 locomotives serving the passenger sector in the 1980’s, there remained interesting passenger workings to note such as that along Weymouth Quay or through the rural tranquillity of Devon’s countryside to Barnstaple. Railfreight ensured a wider variety of locomotives within in the Region. Standard colours of B.R. blue and grey livery may have been monotonous but the bright and clean Network SouthEast colours were welcomed, along with the much needed emphasis on running clean and punctual services as part of the Network SouthEast ethos. Brand new fleets of trains in the Southern area continue to offer the railway enthusiast and photographer the chance to study the impact of privatisation in the modern railway. Fortunately we have several preserved lines in the Southern area which perfectly capture the character of the traditional Southern branch line in the days of heritage diesels.
Lines of Power
Written by John Buxton and Don Heath, two experienced rail professionals, Lines of Power delivers a comprehensive record of the stuttering progress of electrification and modernisation of Britain’s railway network, exposing the furtive manoeuvring by competing factions within the railway industry during the 1950s.The book is highly critical of the excessive scepticism of the Department of Transport (DoT later DfT) and the frequent disproportionate, and often imprudent, interventions by politicians that have collectively thwarted the opportunity to progress a more comprehensive and cost effective ‘rolling programme’ of electrification.
Bus Breakers of the UK
Over the past hundred years, the scrapping of life-expired buses has changed in numerous ways. From being a physically demanding task, it is now undertaken with the use of sophisticated machinery and governed by ever-increasing environmental and health and safety regulations. While bus breaking was initially concentrated in certain areas across the UK, where metal recycling facilities were close at hand, it has ultimately become a nationwide activity. Here Keith Jenkinson remembers those buses that have disappeared from our daily road transport scene, evoking fond memories of bygone eras.
Devon Metro
In 2011, Devon County Council outlined plans for a rapid-transit-style rail network, the Devon Metro, to be achieved through improvements to services and facilities, including the opening of new stations. As well as the Great Western Railway main line, the five other active branches centred on Exeter would be incorporated into the scheme. At the western end of the county, Plymouth councillors have for some time also been looking at a tram-style Metro for the city, along with a new station for Plympton and the reinstatement of the line to Tavistock and Okehampton. With vibrant images and informative text, this book explores how the Metro plans have developed line by line since 2011 and what might realistically be achieved in the next decade.

The Glorious Years of the Southern Railway
The Southern Railway was the smallest of the ‘Big Four’ companies created by the Railways Act 1921. Yet, this was not a hindrance, rather a benefit which helped the SR become one of the more innovative of the group. The Glorious Years of the Southern Railway looks at the company over the period 1923-1945 using nearly 230 high quality black-and-white photographs. These are collected into several sections: locomotives; electric traction; Isle of Wight Railway; carriages; Southampton Docks; stations; war effort. The SR was the only one of the ‘Big Four’ to be solely operational in England, but the company’s territory stretched from east to west in the south. The photographs have been taken in this area at many locations, including stations, the lineside, sheds and workshops. Several companies formed the SR: London, Brighton & South Coast Railway; London & South Western Railway; South Eastern & Chatham Railway; Isle of Wight Railway. A small section of the book recognises their history, whilst the rolling stock continued to be a feature of the SR in the years after formation. The motive power of the SR developed an identity under Maunsell with the ‘Lord Nelson’ Class 4-6-0s, ‘Schools’ Class 4-4-0s, U Class 2-6-0s and Q Class 0-6-0. Though constrained by the war, Bulleid revolutionised the SR’s locomotives with the introduction of the ‘Merchant Navy’ Class Pacifics, ‘West Country’ and ’Battle of Britain’ Pacifics and Q1Class 0-6-0. The SR continued to develop the constituents’ electrification schemes and by the 1930s could boast of operating the largest suburban network in the world. The company also instigated one of the first main line electrification schemes to Brighton which opened in January 1933. This work also saw the SR modernise with colour-light signalling which became the longest stretch used in Britain. Operational for just 25 years, the SR managed to achieve much in that period thanks to the company’s officers and employees. The Glorious Years of the Southern Railway celebrates this contribution to railway history.
