The Settle to Carlisle Line
The railway route between Settle and Carlisle in the North West of England is one of the most scenic lines in Britain. Crossing moors and mountainside, through the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines, the line is famous for its spectacular views, its tunnels and its viaducts, not least the legendary Ribblehead Viaduct. This remarkable feat of Victorian engineering was under threat of closure by British Rail in the 1980s. Campaigners fought hard to keep it open and today growing numbers of passengers travel the line, closed stations have reopened and the line carries many steam-operated specials and charter trains as well as regular passenger and freight workings from Settle Junction on the Leeds–Morecambe Line to Carlisle near the England–Scotland border.In this book photographer John Bentley captures the variety of workings to be seen on this line and its beautiful scenery over the last decade alongside a selection of images taken when the line’s future was in doubt in the 1980s.

Yamaha: the New Dawn
In the early 1960s, Japanese firm Yamaha, previously known as a musical instrument maker, took their first faltering steps into the arena of top flight motorcycle racing. They were comparative latecomers in this world, but soon made stars of riders like Phil Read and Bill Ivy. Their two-stroke engines developed quickly, and within a few short years they were challenging rivals Honda for the top places in the world’s most prestigious race, the Isle of Man TT. By the early 1970s, Yamaha had emerged from the shadow of their competitors to dominate Grand Prix motorcycle sport with their TZ models. More than this though, Yamaha democratised racing by building a machine that was both capable of winning, and also within the reach of any aspiring motorcycle racer. The engine was so versatile – and so effective – that it even lent itself to powering three wheeled machines, and a clutch of sidecar World Championships also fell to Yamaha as a result. The biggest names of the decade – Grant, Mortimer, Williams, O’Dell and Taylor – wrote their names in the TT history books under the Yamaha banner.

Royal Fleet Auxiliaries are distinctive in the maritime world – civilian-crewed Merchant Navy ships owned by the Crown working under naval orders. When Steam Ruled the Roads
The period between the late 1800s and the late 1920s was the heyday of the road steam traction engine. Prior to that, ‘portable’ steam engines were pulled by horses from farm to farm to provide the power unit for belting to machinery for tasks such as the annual threshing. The invention of the self-moving traction engine brought many advances, always staying one jump ahead of amendments to the Locomotive Acts. Fairground operators hauled their huge road train of rides to the next fair; ploughing engines and threshing engines travelled from farm to farm; road hauliers carried huge loads; and steam rollers laid and mended the roads. The availability of cheap surplus First World War petrol vehicles saw road hauliers and fairground showmen dispense with the ‘hassle’ of operating steam vehicles, yet there were still manufacturers making steam wagons until the late 1930s and several councils carried on operating true steam rollers right into the 1960s.Colin Tyson presents a vibrant selection of images celebrating traction engines in all their many and varied forms when ‘steam ruled the roads’.

Tanfield Railway in Colour
In 2025 the Tanfield Railway in County Durham celebrates its 300th anniversary, having been constructed in 1725 as a wagonway to carry coal from the North Durham coalfields to the River Tyne. By the 1960s it was in the hands of British Railways before volunteers took over early the following decade. Since that time the heritage railway has developed as a centre for the preservation of industrial locomotives, which operate over a 3-mile section from East Tanfield to Sunniside. Notable locations along the route include Causey Arch, the first bridge built to carry a railway in 1726, and Marley Hill, the oldest continuously operating engine shed, built in 1854. Although constructed for the transportation of coal, passenger trains now run regularly for visitors on Sundays, between March and October, and in December, the North Pole Express takes eager children to visit Father Christmas. Train enthusiasts are also catered for with demonstration coal trains and an annual gala weekend. All these events are possible due to the efforts of a dedicated group of volunteers of all ages who ensure that traditional skills are passed from one generation to the next.Henry Elliott and Dave Hewitt illustrate Tanfield’s story as a heritage railway with stunning photographs and informative captions.

The Flying Adventures of Charles Green

Rail Atlas: Great Britain & Ireland 16th Edition
Following the sad death of Stuart Baker, the creator of Rail Atlas Great Britain and Ireland, in 2020, we were fortunate that another fine railway cartographer, Joe Brown, agreed to complete the work that Stuart had begun, to revise what became the 15th edition. However, the railway network of Great Britain and Ireland is always changing and never static and revised editions of this atlas are required on a regular basis; the rebuilding of the line from Oxford towards Cambridge and the reinstatement of the Foynes branch in Ireland being examples of some of the additions to this new edition. Fortunately, Joe Brown has agreed to take on this work and this 16th edition will be the first one to be fully edited and revised by him. As with all the previous editions, the Atlas has been fully revised and updated whilst retaining the convenient format of mapping where each page overlaps with that on adjoining pages to make it easier to follow a long-distance route. Where appropriate, additional detailed inset maps have been drawn to show the complex railway developments in metropolitan areas such as Nottingham and Manchester. While some minor changes to the layout have been made, Rail Atlas Great Britain and Ireland remains true to the standards of clarity and accuracy which were the hallmarks of its creator that have made the Atlas an essential work of reference for both railway professionals and enthusiasts since it was first published in the 1970s.
