Kniha vám pomůže určit ptáky žijící v Česku i v celé Evropě. Takových knih je ale na trhu mnoho – tak proč další? Určujeme ptáky podle chování se od ostatních „terénních příruček“ (knih o determinaci určených k používání venku, v terénu) v jednom velmi důležitém ohledu liší. Nevěnuje se problematice různých šatů a vzorů opeření, ale soustřeďuje se na tvar těla, chování a ekologii. Tento přístup ponechává dostatek prostoru pro zdůraznění detailů životního stylu, které mohou v jiných knihách chybět, a přesto jsou při určování a poznávání ptáků užitečné. Protože vynechává mnohé z toho, čím jsou ostatní určovací příručky zahlceny (a co bývá donekonečna opisováno z jedné knížky do druhé), může se zaměřit pouze na ty aspekty tvaru těla a chování, které by jinak mohly být přehlédnuty.
Jistě si také všimnete, že styl této knížky je poněkud odlišný. Určujeme ptáky podle chování je mnohem názornější než jiné terénní příručky – ilustrace zaplňují každou stránku a jsou opatřeny jen stručnými popisky. Nenajdete tu žádný souvislý text ani mapky rozšíření. Nezmiňujeme se ani o hlasech, které ptáci vydávají. Informace jsme skutečně omezili, abychom se soustředili na to, o čem se domníváme, že je jinde popsáno jen zřídka.
