Dlužno dodat, že je to dáma s milým úsměvem a velkým srdcem. Tom Dorrance (1910–2003) Tom se narodil v severovýchodním Oregonu, v místě padesát mil vzdáleném od nejbližšího města. Přes půl století strávil osamělou prací na ranči. „Nikdy jsem se nepokládal za trenéra koní a nepovažuji se za něj dodnes. Prostě jsem vyrostl s koňmi a dobytkem a těm jsem také věnoval všechen svůj čas. Moje samota uprostřed stád byla nejlepší školou pro mé poznání. Každou svou chybu jsem tvrdě zaplatil a nebyl tam nikdo, kdo by mě zachraňoval. Měl jsem práci a ta se musela udělat. Věc, na které mi u koní nejvíce záleží, je naše společná komunikace. Je to něco, na čem nikdy nepřestanu pracovat. Není to něco co bych vám mohl předat. Musíte se to sami naučit. Musí to přijít z vašeho nitra a z nitra vašeho koně. Vše, co vím o koních, mě naučili koně.“ Kniha Pravá jednota byla poprvé vydána v roce 1987 a od té doby se stala nepostradatelným průvodcem lidí, kteří hledají cestu ke svým koním. Četba této knihy je jako krátká návštěva u Toma. Na konci dne pak odjíždíte s úsměvem a pocitem, že se navždy změnil váš přístup nejen ke koním, ale i k lidem a celému životu. Při práci s jezdci a jejich koňmi mluvím o koňském pudu sebezáchovy, který pro mne obsahuje fyzický, mentální a ještě třetí faktor. Již delší dobu hledám správná slova, jak popsat a vysvětlit třetí faktor a jeho vztah ke zbývajícím dvěma, fyzickému a mentálnímu. Mluví se o něm nejméně, ale já začínám věřit, že je tím nejdůležitějším stupněm k pochopení. Jezdec musí pochopit pud sebezáchovy v koňské mysli, těle a třetím faktoru, v jeho duši. Aby s ním mohl začít pracovat, musí pochopit, jak mnoho to pro koně znamená. Musí najít způsob, jak by svým přístupem koně ujistil, že si může ponechat svůj pud sebezáchovy a přesto splnit přání svého jezdce. To je velmi cenná zkušenost pro jezdce i jeho koně. Když se tak zamýšlím nad uplynulými roky, nejsem si jistý, zda jsem to, o čem hovořím, dokázal někomu ze svých žáků jasně vyložit. Někteří pochopili část a dokázali ji i použít. To jim pomohlo překlenout místa, která jim chyběla. O co hůře – netuším, kolik jsem toho ještě sám neobjevil – a kolik by se toho dalo objevit.

Sokan úgy tartják, hogy költségesebb hobbi, mint bármilyen más háziállat tartása, sokkal több vesződséggel jár, és több bosszúságot okoz, mint örömet.
