ZEBs
In recent years there has been universal agreement that traditional methods of fuelling buses and coaches need to be replaced with zero-emission alternatives. Zero-emission buses (ZEBs) are the latest development in bus technology and follow the introduction of low-emission buses and ultra-low emission buses. Bus companies have trialled and ordered considerable deliveries of electric, hydrogen and hybrid vehicles but the process hasn’t been without its problems, specifically around having the necessary infrastructure in place for charging batteries etc. Coach operators are starting to come on board too with longer distance journeys now possible.Richard Walter examines developments in both the UK and overseas with an array of interesting and mainly unpublished photos of many of the zero-emission vehicles now in service.
London's Metrobuses
The Metrobus was the first bus to be built and designed in its entirety by Metro Cammel Weymann (MCW). West Midlands PTE and London Transport were the biggest customers of the MCW Metrobus. The first five trial Metrobuses entered service with London Transport during 1978 and 1979. In 1979 and 1980, a large number of Metrobuses entered service in north-west and south-west London. These vehicles replaced many of the DMS-class and other single-deck models. Towards the end of 1980, the type was put on the Airbus services linking central London with Heathrow Airport. London Transport took stock of 1,440 standard Metrobuses. In 1982, the Metrobus Mark II was launched, with changed styling at the front. London Transport initially ordered two of these buses, trialling them against three other models, the Leyland Olympian, Dennis Dominator and Volvo B55 Ailsa. Another twenty-eight Mark II Metrobuses were purchased by London Buses Limited in 1987 for the low-cost Harrow Buses unit. These were operated briefly and withdrawn in 1991. Slotted in between these were nine second-hand Metrobuses purchased from Greater Manchester Buses, with another five from Busways, with these and the former Manchester examples allocated to Potters Bar. By this time, 1,485 MCW Metrobuses were operating in London. Those purchased by London Transport passed to private operators in 1994 and operated with them until the new millennium. Other Metrobuses were also acquired by tour operators in the capital, who converted them to open-top layout.David Beddall provides a snapshot of the Metrobus while in service in London, both on London Regional and Transport for London services, as well as those examples that saw further service in London as sightseeing buses.
The Manchester to Buxton Line
The Peak District spa town of Buxton was hugely popular in the nineteenth century and the prospect of a railway line from Manchester to the town was desirable for railway companies during the railway boom in the Victorian age. The Manchester & Birmingham Railway opened its first Manchester station in 1840 and the line reached Stockport that year. By 1863 the London & North Western Railway finally reached Buxton, forestalling its rivals. This book follows the development of the line from today’s Piccadilly Station in Manchester to Buxton. The book examines the development of the line from its beginnings to the present day, stations and stops along the way, the lives of those who financed and built the line and rolling stock of the various companies operating the line through the years. Illustrated throughout with contemporary photographs, maps, tickets and other railwayana, the book is a fascinating portrait of what is today one of North West England’s busiest commuter routes.
Southern Region Locomotives in the 1970s and 1980s
British Railways’ modernisation plan permitted individual regions to specify locomotives to fit their own requirements rather than opt for a ‘one size fits all’ policy. As a result, the Southern Region with its third rail network ended up with some very specialised locomotives. Its thrifty reuse and rebuild policy also affected this. The Class 09 shunters stayed entirely on the Southern until privatisation. The Class 71s and the rebuilt Class 74s were all bar one example scrapped very early on. The Class 33 and Class 73 have over the years trundled well off the Southern, and the fact that many Class 73s are still in everyday service after sixty years shows how versatile they are.
