Farewell to Goodison
Farewell to Goodison is a celebration of an atmospheric sporting cathedral that has played a pivotal part in millions of lives. Built in 1892, Goodison Park is unique. It was the first club ground to host an FA Cup final, the first English stadium to boast four sides with two-tier stands, the first to have a three-tiered stand, the first to see programm es sold to its spectators, and the first to feature dugouts and undersoil heating. Goodison Park has also hosted World Cup matches, including a semi-final, a world title boxing bill, baseball, and played host to the visit of a reigning monarch - twice. It has starred in a Rocky movie, has played host to wedding proposals and marriages, seen landmark birthday celebrations staged there and is also a sombre shrine, the final resting place for hundreds of Evertonians. To commemorate Everton Football Club’s departure from Goodison in May 2025, this book celebrates a century of memorable Goodison moments. They are not exclusive. But they are representative of a very special place which, for 133 years, has been ‘home’.
North-East Scotland
Today the Northeast of Scotland is the picture of peace and tranquillity. Some of the highest quality agricultural land is to be found here. But it was not always like this. Although the area lacks the scenic grandeur and dramatic mountains found elsewhere in Scotland, the record of the rocks here bear witness to countless apocalyptic geological events that helped to shape the landscape we see today. The area is bounded to the south by The Highland Line, which played a key role in the assembly of Scotland from a collection of previously unrelated continental fragments 420 million years ago. In more recent times, the land that became Northeast Scotland was covered by desert sands. Primitive lizard-like reptiles roamed the parched plains, leaving their footprints in the sand and impressions of their bones as trace fossils embedded in the rock. The landscape was shaped into its current distinctive form in more recent geological times by the passage of ice.Written for the non-expert and including stunning photographs and diagrams, this is the essential introduction to the geology and landforms of this fascinating part of Scotland.
Making Memories in Ancient Egypt
Memory is a fascinating way to approach modern and ancient cultures, as it raises questions about what, why, and how individuals and groups remember. Egyptology has had a major impact on the development of memory studies, with Jan Assmann''s notion of cultural memory becoming a widespread model within the humanities. Despite this outstanding contribution of Egyptology to memory studies, remarkably few recent works on ancient Egypt deal with memory from a theoretical and methodological point of view. This Element provides a general introduction to memory, followed by a discussion of the role of materiality and performativity in the process of remembering. A case study from Middle Kingdom Abydos illustrates how memory can be embodied in the monumental record of ancient Egypt. The purpose of this Element is to present an up-to-date introduction to memory studies in Egyptology and to invite the reader to rethink how and why memory matters.
The Heart of the Woods
Just as a parent leaves a legacy to their child, a tree leaves a legacy to its surroundings. A deep and explorative companion piece to the Roger Deakin Award-winning The Draw of The Sea.Throughout history, trees have determined the tools we use, the boats we build, the stories we tell about the world and ourselves, the songs we sing, and some of our most important rituals. As such, our lives are intertwined with those of the trees and woodlands around us.In this journey deep into the woods, Wyl Menmuir travels the length and breadth of Britain and Ireland to meet the people who plant trees, the ecologists who study them, those who shape beautiful objects and tools from wood, and those who use them to help others.Wyl also explores how our relationship with trees is enduring, now and in the future – what we get out of spending time around trees, the ways in which our relationship with them has changed over time, and the ways in which our future is interconnected with theirs.Written in close collaboration with makers, crafters, bodgers, and woodsmen and women in order to better understand the woods they know so well, the joys and frustrations of working with a living material, and the stories of their craft and skills, The Heart of The Woods will delight anyone who enjoys walking among the trees, and anyone who, when lost, has found themselves in the woods.Chapters include:WOODLAND PLANTER: A woodland in becoming and an ancient yew grove on the border of North Wales and EnglandRITUAL WEAVER: Willow coffin making in CornwallWOODLORE GATHERER: Science among the trees at Wytham Woods, OxfordshireHEARTWOOD CARVER: Among the bodgers in a field outside CambridgeBOAT BUILDER: A woodland community in the heart of Glasgow’s former docklandsLANDSCAPE SHAPER: Re-wilding the Scottish Highlands and an organised trespass in DevonWISH WEARER: The clootie well at Munlochy on The Black Isle, Scottish Highlands, a family tree on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, and the tree at Sycamore Gap, NorthumbriaFOREST BATHER: Swimming at Swallowship Pool, Devil’s Water, and Letah Woods NorthumberlandMYTH WALKER: Walks in the fictional woods at Wenlock Edge, ShropshireWAY FOLLOWER: Traditional carpentry in Takayama, JapanFIRE LIGHTER: The stories we find among the flames and embers, Ennistymon, Ireland SOUND CREATOR: A pub on Ireland’s west coast and a guitar-builder in North Wales APPLE WAILER: Wassailing in CornwallTREE WORSHIPPER: An ancient yew grove in North Wales

Locomotives In and Around Worksop
Worksop has until recent times been at the heart of the East Midlands coal-mining and power industries, creating a vital rail hub linking the numerous Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and South Yorkshire collieries with the power stations along the Trent Valley that formed the backbone of the UK’s electricity generation capability. While there has been a massive downturn in freight train movements through the region since the demise of coal mining and coal-fired power stations, there remains a fascinating set of train movements through Worksop and its environs. In particular, many of the early types of Diesel-Electric main line locomotives, such as Class 20s, 31s, 37s and 47s, can still be observed. These form an interesting contrast with more modern traction of the Class 66, most commonly used in the East Midlands area. With a wealth of previously unpublished images, this book provides a visual record of the changing locomotive movements in and around Worksop in recent years.
Field Work
Roger Angell meets Hanif Abdurraqib meets Bull Durham in this sharp new collection of baseball writing by Andrew ForbesBaseball is a sport, a pastime, an obsession, a dream—and for some, it’s also a day job. A poetic survey of baseball’s rich history, Field Work shines a light on the people who make the game happen, from major-league stars and little-league coaches to gamblers, ballpark operators, and minor leaguers forging lives outside the dugout.
With sharp-eyed observations and beautiful digressions, these essays portray the complex relationship between work and play—both on and off the field—to demonstrate how baseball is more than just a game.
Driving the Dragon
China is now at the forefront of electric vehicle adoption and a wave of Chinese manufactured cars is now hitting Europe and the West. As the world''s largest car producer since 2008, China''s automotive industry deserves a closer look.Driving the Dragon explores the history of Chinese car manufacture, looking at some of the important cars on that journey, the false starts and missed opportunities. The story begins with the Rover 75 and how it played a key role in moving the Chinese car industry forward. It concludes with a look at cars from the likes of BYD, Zeekr and Nio, which are becoming mainstream in the UK and Europe as some of the most competitive electric vehicles on the market, not just in terms of price but also performance and desirability. For many people China is still a very enigmatic country, not helped by recent political events. While the book focuses on the automotive industry it also looks at the country itself and examines the culture surrounding the industry. The author spent 30 years in China, teaching, test driving and reviewing Chinese cars, and writing, while witnessing first-hand the extraordinary growth of the Chinese car industry.
Independent Merseyside Buses
Since deregulation Merseyside has seen its fair share of independent bus operators come and go. In recent years Arriva and Stagecoach have been the dominant operators with the greater market share but look closely and there are plenty of buses running round in different liveries, mainly on tendered work. These independent operators play their own important part within the Merseyside bus network. Simon Ackers presents a profile of the independent operators in recent operation, with a short and insightful introduction to each and a collection of photographs detailing their fleet and range of work. A colourful journey around Merseyside, this book illustrates the variety in an industry all too often dominated by the big groups.
D&G Bus
Few people would have envisaged that when the fledgling D&G Bus commenced operations in April 1998 with four vehicles that twenty-five years later it would become larger than its neighbour, First Potteries. Its journey has seen expansion through acquisitions of other local bus operators and an increase in tendered services following the collapse of other firms.Rationalisation by Arriva in Cannock, Macclesfield and Winsford provided more opportunities for further growth outside the existing area. Although becoming part of Centrebus in 2019, D&G Bus continues to be run as a separate entity with its two-tone red livery only recently being replaced with a red, blue and yellow scheme applied in the Centrebus style. Over the years the fleet has been diversified, initially with van-derived minibuses followed by Dennis Darts with various bodywork and Optare and Alexander Dennis vehicles, many purchased new.In this book Cliff Beeton’s fine selection of photographs illustrates the rich and varied story of D&G Bus over the last twenty-five years.
Chipped
Chipping a board - where small pieces of deck and tape break off around the nose and tail - is a natural part of skateboarding. Novice or pro, you''ll see folks riding chipped boards as symbols of their stubborn dedication toward a deck, a toy, and aging bodies that will also reach their inevitable end. In CHIPPED, Jose Vadi personalises and expands upon this symbol. Written after finishing his debut collection Inter State: Essays From California (Soft Skull, 2021), Vadi used these essays to explore his own empathy in aging, and to elaborate on the impact skateboarding has had on culture, power, and art. From tracing a critical mass skater takeover of San Francisco''s streets, to an analysis of visceral ''90s skate videos and soundtracks, to the solace found skating a parking lot during a global pandemic, Vadi expands our understanding of the ways skateboarding can alter one''s life. Vadi acts as a ''ethnographer on a skateboard,'' writing, living, and animating an object, likening the board and skate ephemera to the fear of being discarded, wanting to be seen as useful, functional, living. These essays analyse the legacy of seminal texts like Thrasher Magazine, influential programming giants like MTV, and skateboard artists like Ed Templeton. They imagine jazz composer Sun Ra as a skateboarder to explore sonic connections between skateboarding and jazz, obsessively follow bands, chronicle tours, and discover the creative Bermuda triangle Southern California suburbs have to offer. CHIPPED is an intimate, genre-pushing meditation on skateboarding and the reasons we continue to get up after every fall life throws our way.
SNCF Workshops, Depots and Yards
French Rail (SNCF) has always been a magnet for British rail enthusiasts to enjoy workshop, depot and yard visits together with travel by locomotive-hauled passenger trains. Until recently, permits have been made readily available for enthusiasts to visit these installations, some of which can now be reached within the hour by air and just under three hours by Eurostar.Like most countries, including the United Kingdom, many depots and yards have closed in France due to the cessation of wagon load traffic, recession and introduction of the TGV and new bi-modal passenger rolling stock. SNCF still has some extremely large but not so busy marshalling yards strategically located throughout France, where limited hump shunting is still being performed. While most of the main workshops have closed, there are still some large operational depots, including picturesque roundhouses that were favoured by SNCF for the maintenance and stabling of locomotives.Martin Bray has been taking photographs for over forty years and this fascinating selection features many of the installations of SNCF workshops, depots and yards located throughout France.
