This book provides a critical assessment of how Dharamsing Teron’s writings and philosophical ideas form the foundation of Karbi Studies, a field shaped by his academic scholarship. Sexual Heresies
Thinking about relationships between religion and sexuality usually focuses on what religion has to say about sex. But new ideas about sex could also transform religion itself. In Britain at the end of the nineteenth century, the new sexual sciences—from anthropological accounts of religion as rooted in ancient fertility cults to psychoanalytic theories that explained religious experience in terms of psychosexual development—characterized religion as closely connected to the sexual. The outcome, as Joy Dixon traces in this book, was a new sense that religion itself could be sexually suspect. One result of that new suspicion was an increasing concern to police "sexual heresies" and to produce a supposedly normal (healthy, monogamous, and heterosexual) religiosity. The overall effect was a narrowing of the sexual possibilities inside "orthodox" religion and the increasing association of alternative forms of religion with dissident and marginal sexualities that continues to shape both religion and secularism today. Considering a wide range of materials emerging from a diverse array of British society, from modernist theologians and practitioners of sexual magic to conservative Christians and radical freethinkers, this book emphasizes the dynamic relationships between the histories of religion and of sexuality and the historical contingency of the categories we have used to understand the relationship between the two.

The strange and surprising history of the so-called epidemic of bad posture in modern America—from eugenics and posture pageants to today’s promoters of “paleo posture”In 1995, a scandal erupted when the New York Times revealed that the Smithsonian possessed a century’s worth of nude “posture” photos of college students. In this riveting history, Beth Linker tells why these photos were only a small part of the incredible story of twentieth-century America’s largely forgotten posture panic—a decades-long episode in which it was widely accepted as scientific fact that Americans were suffering from an epidemic of bad posture, with potentially catastrophic health consequences. Tracing the rise and fall of this socially manufactured epidemic, Slouch also tells how this period continues to feed today’s widespread anxieties about posture. In the early twentieth century, the eugenics movement and fears of disability gave slouching a new scientific relevance. Bad posture came to be seen as an individual health threat, an affront to conventional race hierarchies, and a sign of American decline. What followed were massive efforts to measure, track, and prevent slouching and, later, back pain—campaigns that reached schools, workplaces, and beyond, from the creation of the American Posture League to posture pageants. The popularity of posture-enhancing products, such as girdles and lumbar supports, exploded, as did new fitness programs focused on postural muscles, such as Pilates and modern yoga. By 1970, student protests largely brought an end to school posture exams and photos, but many efforts to fight bad posture continued, despite a lack of scientific evidence. A compelling history that mixes seriousness and humor, Slouch is a unique and provocative account of the unexpected origins of our largely unquestioned ideas about bad posture.

The book reconstructs Eisler's collaborations with a broad range of Spanish antifascist organisations, examines the reception of his compositional and theoretical work in Republican Spain, and assesses the deep impact of the Spanish civil war on his vocal and symphonic music. It highlights the influence of key local, national, and international communist structures - notably the Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSUC), the Communist Party of Spain (PCE), and the Comintern (Third International) - on the musical and political projects of Eisler and his circle. Grounded in detailed analysis of an extensive corpus of textual, musical, and press materials - primarily preserved in archives in Spain, Germany, Russia, France, and the United States - this study offers new critical frameworks for understanding the role of Western modernist music in contexts of ideological conflict and war. It provides a fresh perspective on the complex entanglements between antifascist propaganda and musical modernism in the interwar period. Hanns Eisler in Republican Spain makes a vital contribution to scholarship at the intersection of music, exile, propaganda, communism, and antifascism, and more broadly, to the study of how political ideologies shaped music, aesthetics, and musical thought across national boundaries during a pivotal era in twentieth-century European history. Between 1492 and 1690, the Spanish and English architects of the doctrine sought to justify European-Christian empire through the incorporation of Indigenous peoples into colonial frameworks as religious, political, property-owning subjects. Examining the works of Peter Martyr, Thomas More, Bartolomé de Las Casas, Richard Hakluyt, and John Locke, among others, Vasko shows how these theorists leveraged and referenced knowledge of Indigenous societies and religious traditions in the Americas as a way of legitimizing imperial claims to the Americas. Zooarchaeology of Ancient Greek Sanctuaries in Southwestern Sicily addresses the topic of ancient Greek sacrificial practices that were performed in the western colonies of Sicily between the 7th and 3rd centuries BC. The approach is primarily centered on zooarchaeology, focusing on the analysis of faunal assemblages derived from three crucial sacred areas associated with the outstanding poleis of Selinus and Akragas. Adopting a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach, the study incorporates current methods in zooarchaeology alongside taphonomic investigations to explore how animals were used for ritual purposes. By repositioning animals within their central role in ancient sacrificial practice, the results have enriched our understanding of the various ritual activities that took place in Selinus and Akragas, providing a more complete view of how religious beliefs were expressed by the ancient inhabitants of these cities. The analyses have confirmed customary patterns of animal sacrifice as reported by literary and epigraphic sources (e.g. thysia and holocaust) as well as shedding light on less frequent ritual practices followed by ancient Greek communities (e.g. foundation sacrifices). Thanks to the large quantity of remains analyzed, the results go beyond the characterization of the sacrificial practice performed in the two poleis, providing significant insights from an extra-regional perspective involving the wider ancient Greek world. The book constitutes the first synthesis on the zooarchaeology of Greek Sicily, providing a substantial amount of new data which fills a noted void in zooarchaeological research due to the still limited use of faunal assemblage analysis in defining the religious landscape of ancient Greek Sicily.

Around a thousand years ago the Vikings crossed the North Atlantic and established their settlements on the American continent. Yet today both Europe and North America treat the Vikings in North America as if it were no more than a curious footnote to their histories – as if the Vikings made just a handful of voyages with little impact. This book challenges this outdated view. We now know that the Vikings travelled widely in North America, both on the east coast and in the high Arctic and Hudson Bay. Today we realise that Viking presence in America lasted nearly five centuries, and its legacy inspired much of the post-Columban exploration of North America.
Grimsby
This book tells the story of the making of Grimsby. It describes how the town grew ‘on the ground’ and so helps to explain Grimsby’s present-day physical character. The story is an intriguing one and includes colourful controversies and conflicts that influenced the town’s development. The story begins with the Viking foundation of Grimsby. Then, in the years after the Norman Conquest the town became a successful trading community and port. This was followed by a long period of decline. The town’s fortunes were revived with the coming of the railway in 1848 and the constructions of an extensive dock system. There then followed a massive increase in trade, and the foundation of the port’s modern fishing industry. In the process, it attracted immigration. This new population needed somewhere to live. Consequently, land was quickly covered with houses. The long-term effect of this period of extensive and intensive building – which is described in this book – was to determine to a large extent the shape and character of the modern town.

Catuvellaunia and Rome: Economic and Political Relations during the Final Decades Pre-conquest
This study brings together the numismatic, textual, and archaeological evidence required to discuss potential economic collaboration between the powerful Roman client-kingdom of Catuvellaunia in southeastern Britain and the growing Roman military presence in northern Gaul during the decades before the Claudian conquest of Britain in AD 43 and the inevitable full annexation of Catuvellaunia by Rome as Britannia, a strategic asset. The main theme of the study centres on the grain-wealth of intensively cultivated productive chalk-land in southern Britain and the potential for its ready export to fulfil the growing needs of the military in northern Gaul, a damaged war-zone already limited in its agricultural productivity, during the decades BC-AD. Context for the study is provided by a series of related case-studies:- discussion of climatic conditions, agrarian systems, and models of grain production-consumption set the basic agri-economic parameters;- the logistics and problems of managing land-based, riverine, and maritime supply-lines servicing the northwestern frontier are discussed, with added context on contemporary settlement and shipping;- the position of Camulodunon in the context of other oppida, of Greater Catuvellaunia within the tribal structures in southern Britain, and of its role as an agent of cross-Channel trade, located nearest to Gaul, reflect its wider controlling regional power;- evidence from Celtic coinage, stylistic and inscriptional, provide a major source for essential discussion of tribal structures and lineages;- questions of military supply are outlined in detailed case-studies of two developing near-contemporary frontier-zones: the Tayside Militarised Zone [Scotland], and the Rhine frontier;- political aspects of clientship and annexation by Rome across the wider Empire provide interesting parallels.
