Inner Zone
Unearths a buried history of retributive violence that unfolded inside besieged SarajevoIn asymmetrical conflicts, how should we acknowledge suffering on the side of the perpetrators of violence? How can we do so without losing sight of the harm they inflicted, and without relativizing the suffering of their victims? Inner Zone introduces a new approach to telling contentious histories of war and explores the political implications of refusing to extend recognition to those who suffer on the "wrong" side of a conflict. Bosnian Serb forces held the city of Sarajevo under siege from 1992 until 1995. Inner Zone revisits this emblematic conflict from the perspective of Bosnian Serb women who remained in the city during the siege years. As Serb civilians came to be associated with the ethno-national aggressor, these women became targets of collective punishment and retribution. The war crimes committed against them have been written out of most academic and journalistic accounts of the war, and in Sarajevo, they have become a public secret. Pluralizing the monolithic story of the siege into zones of violence, Jelena Golubovic locates an inner zone of retribution within the larger outer zone of besiegement, telling a nested history that reconfigures how we think about victimhood and complicity across both sides of a conflict. As Bosnian Serb women tell their previously untold stories through ethnographic interviews, Golubovic remains attentive to the anxious sense of exclusion that haunts them in the postwar city. While their victimization is erased from the dominant narrative of the war in Sarajevo, the Bosnian Serb ethno-nationalist elite emphasize it to claim exclusive victimhood. Inner Zone takes on the challenge of disentangling lived experiences of violence from the grip of ethno-nationalist misappropriation, arguing that a sense of misrecognition and unacknowledged injury can ultimately lead victims of the inner zone of violence to adopt ethno-nationalist narratives and goals.

The track record of Britain’s railways in the early 20th century was not a good one – in 1909, a report titled ‘General Report to the Board of Trade upon the Accidents that have occurred on the Railway of the United Kingdom during the year 1908’, was published, concluding that over 1,000 people had died on the railways during the year, and nearly 8,000 others had been injured. De stele en aiguille: Chroniques de la reconstitution d’un habit campaniforme
Réaliser un habit néolithique complet est un défi ambitieux ; cet ouvrage en présente l’aboutissement. Il est issu de mon mémoire de master en archéologie préhistorique a l’Université de Geneve, soutenu en septembre 2025. A l’aide de sources archéologiques centrées sur le Campaniforme périalpin, ainsi que de sources historiques et ethnographiques, j’ai tenté de reproduire au mieux les pratiques textiles du passé, afin d’en proposer une vision plausible. Les motifs géométriques complexes présents sur les steles anthropomorphes du site du Petit-Chasseur (Valais, Suisse), ont servi de base visuelle pour la conception du vetement. Cette étude aborde des sujets tres variés, tels que : la place de l’artisanat textile au sein des sociétés préhistoriques, autant du point de vue des modes de production et de l’investissement de ressources que de la valeur sociale ; la diversité des possibilités techniques liées a la fabrication de textiles, immense et encore peu explorée ; l’importance de l’expérimentation archéologique au sein de la recherche, et son intéret autant scientifique que médiatique. Bien qu’ancré dans des bases scientifiques rigoureuses, ce travail est également tres personnel. Il raconte, étape par étape, le long processus d’apprentissage qui a mené a la production de cet habit, avec son lot d’échecs, d’incertitudes, et – enfin – de réussites.

Prehistoric Aesthetics
Prehistoric Aesthetics provides a new definition of the concept of prehistoric art. It argues that the autonomy of art and the aesthetic can be extended beyond modernity, and reworks the Western tradition of philosophical aesthetics towards a prehistoric aesthetics. Whereas it is normally modern Western art that is considered to be an autonomous type of art, which is coupled to an autonomous aesthetic experience, the book argues that it is in prehistoric art that the true autonomous condition of art and aesthetics manifested itself. A new research strategy is developed in which the fields of prehistoric archaeology and theoretical archaeology are integrated with the fields of philosophical aesthetics and metaphysics. This is related to current theoretical developments in archaeology, in which we see a turn towards ontological questions. The study examines three different types of prehistoric art: the hand axe and stone bola of the Lower/Middle Palaeolithic, the cave art of the Franco-Cantabrian area, and the rock art and small sculptural objects of the Neolithic of Britain/Ireland. A new type of aesthetic autonomy and aesthetic experience is constructed for animism through the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze, Alfred North Whitehead, Immanuel Kant, and Theodor Adorno. The book proposes a new definition of prehistoric art that takes the form of a theoretical statement on the relation between prehistoric and modern/contemporary art. This means that the book is not only a study in prehistoric art and aesthetics, but also provides a model of how to compare prehistoric and modern/contemporary art with one another.

Byzantine Historical Writing
In this collection of essays, James Howard-Johnston evaluates historical sources from across the entire existence of the Byzantine empire. Byzantium was peculiarly well endowed for the writing of history, given a relatively high degree of literacy, a large governing class running a centralised state and its associated church, and its inheritance of the historical habit developed independently in classical Greece and Judaea. Historical coverage is complete save for one short period, the reign of Constans II (641–9). Unsurprisingly, in what was a thoroughly bureaucratic state, officials and ex-officials of state and church predominate among historians. The histories they wrote were of two principal sorts: compendia which might reach back to the beginning of time, succinct, concerned primarily with chronology, and written in relatively plain language; and contemporary histories presenting fuller narratives, more interested in causes and effects, and generally written in a higher style, with classical touches. They used the bureaucratic vernacular, were primarily concerned with high politics and foreign affairs, and calibrated time by financial years. Particular emphasis is put on their use of documentary sources, the surest and safest conveyors of detailed information from the past to the historian. A small number of individual historians are singled out for closer scrutiny, because of the importance or unusual character of their works. Procopius is portrayed as an experienced military architect/engineer and born storyteller rather than a highly educated lawyer. Theophanes deserves a special place, because of the scale of the work which he wrote with his mentor George Synkellos. George, it turns out, wrote the last contemporary section of their world history. Constantine Porphyrogenitus (905–59) was responsible for a historically enriched guide to diplomacy, but most of the valuable information which it contains about the early medieval history of the Balkans, Ukrainian steppes, and Transcaucasia is attributable to his father, Leo VI. The Logothete's world chronicle is singled out because of its vitriolic attack on the first three Macedonian emperors. Finally, Anna Komnene demands attention as the first known female historian. Her Alexias, probably the finest history produced in Byzantium, is shown to contain a great deal of material drafted by her husband, Nikephoros Bryennios. This contentious view is canvassed in the last three essays.

Drawing on conversations in currently developing literature on colonialism and decolonization, exile and diaspora studies, as well as comparative history, Ylana N. Miller argues that Zionism must be seen through a multinational lens that illuminates the historical process by which it was reduced from a broad, diverse, generative arena of Jewish political creativity to an exclusionary nationalism. Central to the history of this process is the gradual transformation of the American political environment within which Zionism came to be identified with the state of Israel. A key and abiding insight that this history advances is that Jewish history cannot be told without recognition of parallel developments among other groups; for this study, Palestinian Arabs and Algerians. The shift in the diaspora/Zionist center of gravity from European dominance to that of the United States should be understood as representing a break and change rather than continuity. The US–Israel relationship that appears unquestionable today was not inevitable. It was the result of the gradual winnowing of dissenting voices and the embrace of a specific version of state identity.

Runaway Joe

Broxy Kennels Fort, Souterrain and Surrounding Landscape, Perth
Archaeological excavation of almost the entirety of Broxy Kennels Fort to the north of Perth, was undertaken in advance of a new road development. It revealed a multivallate fortified settlement on a hill overlooking the River Tay. The fort constructed in the 6th century BC initially comprised two ditches that encircled the hill with a north-east entranceway that led to the interior. Around the late 5th-early 4th centuries BC, parts of the settlement’s defences were altered to accommodate a souterrain constructed into one of the silted-up ditches. The alteration necessitated a further short ditch either side of the entrance, followed by a final outer ditch that encircled the hill. Other changes within the enclosure may also have occurred at this time with material from clearance of structures being dumped in the ditches. After a short hiatus, an unenclosed settlement within the interior of the fort persisted from the 4th century BC until around the late 1st century AD. Other than traces of sporadic activity from the early medieval period to the post-medieval era, the site was to all intents and purposes lost to the plough.
