Kázňami a katechézami vychovával duchovenstvo i ľud. V r. 451 sa konal koncil v Chalcedóne. Pápež poslal po legátoch list Flaviánovi, biskupovi Konštantínopolu o dvoch prirodzenostiach Ježiša Krista, ktorý bol prijatý so všeobecným nadšením. Otcovia zvolali: Peter prehovoril ústami Leva. Pokladá sa za prvé vyhlásenie pápeža ex catedra. Nazýva sa Tomus ad Flavianum. V Konštantínopole vymenoval stáleho zástupcu Rímskej cirkvi, apokrizára, z čoho sa vyvinul úrad nunciov. V r. 452 zabránil zničeniu Ríma Attilom. Označovaný je za obrancu pravej viery, slabých a trpiacich, za posla mieru. Bol veľmi pokorný. Zachovalo sa okolo stopäťdesiat listov a deväťdesiat šesť kázní, veľa dokumentov.

Táto kniha je pokusom odpovedať na otázku, ako sa modliť, a teda ako sa skutočne stretnúť s Bohom. Nájdete v nej trochu teórie o modlitbe aj konkrétny modlitebný plán na niekoľko týždňov. Autor miestami používa nekonvenčný jazyk, ale v základnom postoji k modlitbe je nekompromisný a také sú aj posolstvá v tejto knihe.
