Je matematika věda?
Otázku, zda matematika je či není věda, si dnes nikdo vážně neklade. Tato velice abstraktní disciplína pronikla úspěšně nejenom do většiny přírodovědeckých oborů, ale ovlivňuje skrze nejrůznější moderní technologie a přístroje i náš běžný život. Jistě bychom proto souhlasili s C. F. Gaussem, podle nějž je matematika královnou všech věd, a otázku položenou v titulu naší knihy bychom považovali za předem zodpovězenou.
Matematika však v dějinách naší civilizace onou královnou věd nebyla vždycky. V dřívějších dobách byla buď podřazena metafyzice či teologii, nebo byla po určité stránce z celku skutečného vědění zcela vyčleněna. V naší knize sledujeme proměny jejího vědeckého statusu a současně uvádíme věcné argumenty, které hovořily a dodnes hovoří pro to či ono stanovisko.
Naše historické zkoumání nepovažujeme za samoúčelné. Vede nás totiž k závěru, že matematiku a jí podřazené disciplíny je třeba důsledně oddělit od metafyziky či přírodní filosofie, mezi něž byla v předcházejících dějinách (díky Aristotelovi) vklíněna. Matematika totiž zkoumá člověkem vytvořené struktury či systémy znaků, filosofie naopak skutečnosti, které jsou na lidské činnosti nezávislé. Matematika a potažmo i přírodní vědy v moderním slova smyslu tedy hrají – wittgensteinovsky řečeno – jinou řečovou hru než metafyzika či přírodní filosofie, a nejedná se tudíž o vědy v témže slova smyslu.
