Istvánffi Gyula (Kolozsvár, 1860. április 5. – Budapest, 1930. augusztus 16.) botanikus, mikológus, ampelológus. Fő kutatási területe a gombák és a gombák okozta szőlőbetegségek patológiai vizsgálata, az ellenük való növényvédelmi módszerek kidolgozása volt. 1901-től a Magyar Tudományos Akadémia levelező, majd 1920-tól rendes tagja lett.
„Az ehető és mérges gombákról írott külföldi munkák száma tekintélyes, de ezek között a mi viszonyainknak megfelelő modern s mégis népszerű munka alig van, mert más fajokkal élünk mi jórészt, mint azok, akiknek számára írattak vagy pedig a gombák jellemzése s ábrázolása olyan, hogy azon a nagy közönség nem igazodik el egykönnyen. A gomba manapság nem ínyes csemege, hanem közgazdaságilag jelentékeny táplálék s minden körben való elterjesztése, megismertetése fontos és a népek jólétét előmozdító feladat.” – írja könyve előszavában a szerző.

Leonhart Fuchs: The New Herbal
Leonhart Fuchs (1501–1566,) was a founding father of modern botany, honored to this day in the vivid flower, and corresponding color, Fuchsia.
