Fenomény architektury samé nenazírá odděleně jedny od druhých, ani jako závislé na situacemi podmíněných motivech, ale spíše v pojmech podstatných vztahů: prostor uvnitř domu ve vztahu k vnějšímu prostoru, forma zdi ve vztahu k vnitřnímu prostoru, velikost přímky/křivky ve vztahu k velikosti plochy a objemu. Všechny tyto jevy jsou konečně podřízeny hlavnímu pravidlu čísla, jímž dům získává nejen materiální, ale také duchovní hodnotu.
Benediktinský mnich a architekt Dom Hans van der Laan (1904–1991) se narodil 29. prosince 1904 v Leydenu jako deváté dítě Leonarda van der Laana a Anny Stadhouder. Otec van der Laana byl architekt a rovněž malý Hans chtěl kráčet v jeho šlépějích. V roce 1921 onemocněl Hans tuberkulózou, což ho vyřadilo ze studií. V roce 1923 začal studovat architekturu na Technische Hogeschool v Delftu. Na konci akademického roku 1926 opustil Delft a začal se připravovat na řeholní život. Vstoupil jako novic do opatství sv. Pavla v Oosterhoutu a začal studovat filozofii a teologii. V roce 1930 začal navrhovat liturgické oděvy a náčiní. Na kněze byl ordinován v roce 1934.
Jeho architektonickou prvotinou bylo křídlo jeho domovského opatství. Hans se po druhé světové válce připojil k iniciativě svého bratra architekta Nica, který měl navrhovat sakrální stavby v provincii Noord Brabant. Z intenzivních diskusí obou bratří o chrámu jako neparadigmatičtějším obydlí – domu vznikla kaple sv. Josefa v Helmondu. V roce 1956 dostal Hans van der Laan nabídku benediktinského opatství ve Vaalsu na projekt kostela. V roce 1960, ještě před dokončením svého projektu ve Vaalsu, publikoval svou první teorii architektury – Le Nombre Plastique, jež byla přeložena v roce 1967 do nizozemštiny v roce 1967 jako Het plastische getal (Plastické číslo). V roce dokončení kostela se přestěhoval z Oosterhoutu do Vaalsu. V roce 1977 vyšla jako výsledek mnohaletého přemýšlení o architektuře jeho kniha De architectonische ruimte, kterou přeložil teoretik architektury a architekt Richard Padovan (je po něm nazvána Padovanova sekvence) jako Architectonic Space.
V roce 1985 vydal Van der Laan knihu, která odhaluje zdroje jeho teoretických postojů – Het vormenspel der liturgie, kterou opět přeložil Richard Padovan (vyšla pod názvem The Play of Forms: Nature, Culture and Liturgy). Kniha je spíše než teorií antropologií liturgie a architektury. Posledním dílem Van der Laana je shrnutí jeho teoretického díla Nástroje řádu.
