Philip Jodidio

Ando - Complete Works, Updated Version 2010

Philippe Starck describes him as a "mystic in a country which is no longer mystic." Philip Drew calls his buildings "land art" that "struggle to emerge from the earth." He is the only architect to have won the discipline's four most prestigious prizes: the Pritzker, Carlsberg, Praemium Imperiale, and Kyoto Prize. His name is Tadao Ando, and he is one of the greatest living architects. Combining influences from Japanese tradition with the best of Modernism, Ando has developed a completely unique building aesthetic that makes use of concrete, wood, water, light, space, and nature in a way that has never been witnessed in architecture. His designs include award-winning private homes, churches, museums, apartment complexes, and cultural spaces throughout Japan, as well as in France, Italy, Spain, and the USA. This book, created at the height of Ando's illustrious career, and thoroughly updated for this new 2010 edition, presents his complete works to date.

Homes For Our Time

Across small cottages and lavish villas, beach houses and forest refuges, discover the world's finest crop of new homes. This cutting-edge global digest features such talents as Shigeru Ban and Marcio Kogan alongside up-and-coming names like Aires Mateus, Xu Fu-Min, Vo Trong Nghia, Desai Chia, and Shunri Nishizawa. Here, there are homes in Australia and New Zealand, from China and Vietnam, in the United States and Mexico, and on to less expected places like Ecuador and Costa Rica. The result is a sweeping survey of the contemporary house and a revelation that homes across the globe may have more in common than expected. Among guava trees and abandoned forts in Western India is a sanctuary designed for and by Kamal Malik of Malik Architecture. The House of Three Streams is a sprawling spectacle with high ceilings, verandas, and pavilions, perched atop a ridge overlooking two ravines. A medley of steel, glass, wood, and stone, the house weaves along the contour of the landscape, almost as an extension of the forest. Encina House by Aranguren & Gallegos, an elegant, sloping structure reminiscent of a gazebo, similarly inhabits its surrounding vista. Ensconced in a pine forest north of Madrid, the lower level is embedded in rock and connected to the upper by a natural stone wall. Shinichi Ogawa's Seaside House is an immaculate two-story minimalist marvel in Kanagawa that overlooks the Pacific. Its living area spills onto a cantilevered terrace and infinity pool, almost dissolving into the ocean as one seamless entity. In Vietnam, Shunri Nishizawa's House in Chau Doc exudes tropical sophistication with exposed timber beams, woven bamboo, plants, concrete panels, and inner balconies and terraces. Its corrugated iron panels act as moveable walls and shutters, ushering in views of surrounding rice fields. These homes-along with more than 50 others-are each remarkably distinct in design. They all, however, toe the line between inside and outside, each one symbiotic with its surroundings. About the series TASCHEN turns 40 this year! Since we started our work as cultural archaeologists in 1980, TASCHEN has become synonymous with accessible publishing, helping bookworms around the world curate their own library of art, anthropology, and aphrodisia at an unbeatable price. In 2020, we celebrate 40 years of incredible books by staying true to our company credo. The 40 series presents new editions of some of the stars of our program-now more compact, friendly in price, and still realized with the same commitment to impeccable production.

Small Houses

A Small House is a tribute to the endless artistic inventiveness of architects and ingenuity of perception of the familiar and known concepts. It is also a conscious pivot towards sustainability and reduction of impact on the environment as well as a daring attitude of change in lifestyle. As humanity faces inevitable pressures such as climate change, an increase in population, and strain on resources, these solutions are helping shape what the world may look like in the future.Whether in the dense urban areas of Tokyo, the wilderness of Australia, the woods of Canada, or a rooftop in Ecuador, this is the world of Small Houses. The one common point they share, is that they all have an area of no more than 100 square meters. Spanning 25 countries such as Brazil, Hungary, South Korea, Netherlands, USA, Japan, and Australia, described here there are houses designed by 57 architects, including Takeshi Hosaka's Love2 House, Aranza de Arino's Casa Tiny, and the work of Jakub Szczesny, Charles Pictet, Lada Hršak, BIG, and Fran Silvestre, among others. This is a journey not only through recent evolutions in architectural design and creativity, but it is also a step toward a more sustainable world.

100 Contemporary Green Buildings

Eco-friendly building in the world today The most exciting new buildings in the world are now almost all environmentally aware, sustainable, and conceived to consume far less energy than ever before. That architecture is one of the major sources of greenhouse gases in the world makes this new trend is all the more significant. This book brings together the best examples of green projects from the "Architecture Now" series together with numerous new, never-before-seen projects. Well-known architects like Frank Gehry and Norman Foster are present right alongside young, up-and-coming creators from Latin America, the United States, Europe, and Asia. This is not a technical book, nor are its contents limited to any pre-defined category. Being "green" means being aware of the responsibility implied in the construction and use of modern buildings, and there are many ways to express this rising consciousness. Some solutions, the ones generally called "passive," are as old as the history of architecture, while others are born of cutting-edge technologies. Both approaches and many more are included in this ground-breaking collection of 100 of the world's most exciting recent eco-friendly buildings.

Architecture Now! Landscape

Turning the world green. The architecture of the great outdoors. One of the hottest areas of contemporary design is clearly landscape architecture. No matter what the architectural style of the moment, the green areas around houses, stadiums or corporate headquarters have taken on a considerable importance, all the more so with the emphasis on ecology and green design. This book calls on the work of the top designers of the moment, from Ken Smith, author of the "Museum of Modern Art's" rooftop garden to West8 from Rotterdam, but also on architects ranging from Foreign Office to Tadao Ando who have long been fascinated by the environments of their buildings. There are new names like the Lebanese landscape architect Vladimir Djurovic and well-known ones like Martha Schwartz. There are established firms like the Wirtz family from Belgium or Gustafson Porter from the United States and young creators like Sophie Agata Ambroise from Lugano. The limit between architecture and landscape architecture is not always easy to define, but this new book opens the doors and windows of today's architecture into the gardens of tomorrow. Featured architects and practices include: AECOM, Tadao Ando, Balmori Associates, Patrick Blanc, Caffarena, Cobos et al, Cervino Lopez, Vladimir Djurovic, DSR, Peter Eisenman, EMBT, James Corner Field, Glavovic Studio, Carrilho da Graca, Gustaffson Guthrie, Gustaffson Porter, Zaha Hadid, Herzog & de Meuron, Steven Holl, Martin Hurtado, Raymond Jungles, Maya Lin, LRO, Giovanni Maciocco, Michael Maltzan, Mecanoo, Fernando Menis, Eduardo de Miguel, Catherine Mosbach, Sotoji Nakamura, Victor Neves, NGBM, Nieto Sobejano, Officina del Paesaggio, Okra, John Pawson, Renzo Piano, Palerm Tabares, Masuno Shunmyo, Ken Smith, Taylor Cullity Lethlean, Michael van Valkenburgh, Weiss Manfredi, West8, and Wirtz International, Work AC.

Architecture In The Emirates

The small emirates and states located on the Gulf, at the eastern edge of the Saudi Arabian peninsula, are building new cities in the desert at an astonishing rate, from Bahrain to Doha, and south to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Comprised of Abu D habi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain, the UAE is an oil-and-gas-rich region that has experienced an unparalleled architectural boom in recent years. With a dizzying array of ultra-modern towers popping up throughou t the area, it's no surprise that the Gulf region has attracted many of the world's most prominent architects, including Tadao Ando, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, and Jean Nouvel, who are all designing groundbreaking projects for the ambitious Cultural Di strict project on Saadiyat Island off the coast of Abu Dhabi. With these and many more remarkable, large-scale projects recently built or in progress, the Gulf emirates are perhaps today's top architectural hotspot.

Architecture Now!

--Gabi Bauer
