Japanese House Reinvented

Japanese houses today have to contend with unique factors that condition their design, from tiny plots in crowded urban contexts to ever-present seismic threats. These challenges encourage their architects to explore alternating ideas of stability and ephemerality in various ways, resulting in spaces that are as fascinating as they are idiosyncratic. Their formal innovation and attention to materials, technology and measures to coax in light and air while maintaining domestic privacy make them cutting-edge residences that suggest new ways of being at home. Contemporary Japanese architecture has emerged as a substantial force on the international scene ever since Kenzo Tange won the Pritzker Prize in 1987. This overview of 50 recent houses powerfully demonstrates Japans enduring commitment to design innovation.

Tadao Ando: Complete Works 1975-2014

The Tadao touch. Ando's complete works to date 1975-2014. Philippe Starck describes him as a "mystic in a country which is no longer mystic." Philip Drew calls his buildings "land art" as they "struggle to emerge from the earth." He is the only architect to have won the discipline's four most prestigious prizes: the Pritzker, Carlsberg, Praemium Imperiale, and Kyoto Prize. His name is Tadao Ando, and he is one of the greatest living architects. Combining influences from Japanese tradition with the best of Modernism, Ando has developed a completely unique building aesthetic that makes use of concrete, wood, water, light, space, and nature in a way that has never been witnessed in architecture. His designs include award-winning private homes, churches, museums, apartment complexes, and cultural spaces throughout Japan, as well as in France, Italy, Spain, and the USA. This book, created at the height of Ando's illustrious career, and thoroughly updated for this new 2014 edition, presents his complete works to date.

Renzo Piano: Complete Works 1966-2014

Piano, virtuoso. This book covers the wide-ranging career of the master architect. "The array of buildings by Renzo Piano is staggering in scope and comprehensive in the diversity of scale, material, and form. He is truly an architect whose sensibilities represent the widest range of this and earlier centuries." Such was the description of Renzo Piano given by the Pritzker Prize jury as they bestowed the prestigious award on him in 1998. Whereas some architects have a signature style, what sets Piano apart is that he seeks simply to apply a coherent set of ideas to new projects in extraordinarily different ways. "One of the great beauties of architecture is that each time, it is like life starting all over again," Piano says. "Like a movie director doing a love story, a western, or a murder mystery, a new world confronts an architect with each project." This explains why it takes more than a superficial glance to recognize Piano's fingerprints on such varied projects as the Pompidou Center in Paris (1971-77), the Kansai airport in Osaka, Japan (1990-94), and The New York Times Building in New York (2000-07). This stunning monograph, illustrated by photographs, sketches, and plans, covers Piano's career to date. The updated publication includes new photographs of the now completed Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago, his 66-story London Bridge Tower, and the Kimbell Art Museum Expansion in Fort Worth, Texas, as well as a sneak peek at his current project, Valletta City Gate in Valletta, Malta, which includes the construction of a new parliament building.

100 Contemporary Concrete Buildings

The charm of concrete architecture today. Who has not heard of concrete? It is that ugly stuff they make highway bridges and crumbling walls out of, right? Well, yes, and no. Concrete is actually a name applied to a remarkably wide range of substances used in construction, and, when it is properly handled, it is actually one of the noble materials of contemporary architecture. A kind of "liquid stone" at the outset, it is malleable, durable, and, in the right hands, capable of prodigious feats of engineering. This two-volume book highlights the best work done in recent years with concrete. Included are "stars" like Zaha Hadid. Herzog & de Meuron, and Steven Holl, but also surprising new architects like the Russians SPEECH, rising stars of the international scene like Rudy Ricciotti from France, and even artists such as James Turrell, who turned the famous concrete spiral of Frank Lloyd Wright's Guggenheim in New York into the setting of one of his most remarkable pieces.

Shigeru Ban, updated version

This monograph, compiled with the architect's collaboration, traces his career and features every built work of Shigeru Ban, showing clearly why he is one of the world's most innovative and significant architects. Unlike many of his peers, Ban can create remarkable residences and still find time to design emergency relief housing for disaster areas from Kobe to New Orleans. Ban consistently challenges accepted notions of architecture, designing a house without walls, or an exhibition space made from paper tubes and shipping containers; his designs give new meaning to the term "Paper Architect." Challenging the system with inventive repurposing of everyday materials is just the beginning of his genius, as clearly evidenced in this sweeping monograph.

David Chipperfield

"Architecture has to explain itself. It has got to be very clear, what you might call simple." Born in 1953, David Chipperfield worked for both Norman Foster and Richard Rogers before establishing a reputation for himself in Japan in the early 80s, and setting up David Chipperfield Architects in 1984. The practice, which now operates out of London, Berlin, Milan and Shanghai has gone on to win over 50 national and international competitions. Suspicious of "starchitecture". Chipperfield adheres instead to a meticulously crafted minimalism in which volumes and light come together in masterful harmony. Less concerned with an immediately recognizable, individual style, he rather aspires to an architecture founded on collaboration, ideas, and excellence. His buildings are intended as physically immediate spaces in which "a sort of ordinariness" becomes special, and the individual structure co-exists with broader concepts of city building. Chipperfleld's vision has driven major projects around the globe, from the Des Moines Public Library in Iowa, USA to the Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield, UK and the famed reconstruction of the Neues Museum in Berlin, Germany. Recent work includes the Museo Jumex in Mexico City and the expansion of the Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis, USA. This monograph features twenty four of Chipperfield's most significant projects, with a thorough introduction, detailed descriptions, and an extensive interview covering his major influences, and guiding principles on structure, space, and urban experience.

100 Contemporary Wood Buildings

Timberland: The wooden structures of the 21st century Not so very long ago, some might have considered wood a material of the past, long since replaced by more modern components such as concrete and steel. The truth is radically different. Bolstered by new manufacturing techniques and ecological benefits, wood has seen afabulous resurgence in contemporary construction. This double-volume survey explores how architects around the world have created and invented with this elementary material. Featuringfollies, very large buildings, and ambitious urban renewal schemes, it celebrates the diverse deployment of wood from architects in China, Chile, and everywhere in between. We see how wood can at once transform urban spaces, as in theMetropol Parasol in Sevilleby Jurgen Mayer H, and allow for sensitive interventions in natural environments, as at theFinnish Forest Research Instituteby SARC Architects, or the Termas Geometricas Hot Springs Complexby German del Sol.True to all TASCHEN architecture tomes, the book pays tribute to many emerging international talents, as well as to such renowned figures as Tadao Ando to Renzo Piano. It celebrates each of these architect s vision and innovation, as well as investigating thetechniques, trends, and principlesthat have informed their work with wood. It examines the computer guided milling that has allowed for novel new forms, the responsible harvesting that allows wood to align with our environmental concerns, and, above all, wood s enduring appeal to our senses and our psyche, comforting hectic modern lives with a sense of Arcadian beauty and simplicity. Niemeyer

Brazilian curves: A uniquely sensual modernism in Brasilia and beyondUntil his death at age 104, Oscar Niemeyer (1907 2012) was something of an unstoppable architectural force. Over seven decades of work, he designed approximately 600 buildings, transforming skylines from Bab-Ezzouar, Algeria, to his homeland masterpiece Brasilia.Niemeyer s work took the reduced forms of modernism and infused them with free-flowing grace. In place of pared-down starkness, his structures rippled with sinuous and seductive lines. In buildings such as the Niteroi Contemporary Art Museum, Edificio Copan, or the Metropolitan Cathedral in Brasilia, he brought curvaceousness to the concrete jungle. In the futuristic federal capital of Brasilia, he designed almost all public buildings, and thus became integral to the global image of Brazil. With rich illustrations documenting highlights from his prolific career, this book introduces Niemeyer s unique vision and its transformative influence on buildings of business, faith, culture, and the public imagination of Brazil.About the series: Each book in TASCHEN s Basic Architecture series features: an introduction to the life and work of the architect the major works in chronological order information about the clients, architectural preconditions as well as construction problems and resolutions a list of all the selected works and a map indicating the locations of the best and most famous buildings approximately 120 illustrations (photographs, sketches, drafts and plans)"

Piano

Building virtuoso: The exploration and iconoclasm of an Italian masterWhile some architects have a signature style, Renzo Piano seeks to apply coherent ideas to extraordinarily different projects. His buildings impress as much for their individual impact as for their diversity of scale, material, and form.Piano rose to international prominence with his codesign of the Pompidou Center in Paris, described by The New York Times as a building that turned the architecture world upside down. Since then, he has continued to craft many high-profile cultural spaces, including the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago; the Morgan Library Renovation and Expansion in New York; and, most recently, the Whitney Museum of American Art, an asymmetric nine-story structure in Manhattan s Meatpacking District with both indoor and outdoor galleries. In New York and London, the Renzo touch has also transformed the skyline with the towers of the New York Times Building and the Shard, the tallest building in the European Union. This essential introduction travels from Osaka, Japan, to Bern, Switzerland, and through many cities, structures, and islands in between, to explore the staggering scope of the Renzo Piano repertoire. From the inside-out Pompidou to the airy shells of the Tjibaou Cultural Center in Noumea, New Caledonia, this is a thrilling journey through the beauty of architecture, where, in Piano s own words, each time, it is like life starting all over again. Shigeru Ban

Master innovator: Challenging accepted notions of architectureFrom emergency relief shelters to a cardboard cathedral and exhibition spaces in shipping containers, Pritzker-prize winning architect Shigeru Ban has made his name with his restlessly inventive response to material and situation, as much as with his humanitarian work at the sites of natural and man-made disasters. In the spirit of a three-dimensional poetry, Ban uses materials as an incorporated part of his design, selected not for their cutting-edge credentials but rather for their expressive ability, their capacity to convey the building s overall concept. In particular, Ban has made regular use of paper tubing in projects as varied as the Japanese Pavilion at Expo 2000 and emergency shelters for Rwanda s Byumba Refugee Camp. This essential introduction, compiled with Ban s own collaboration, presents every one of his projects to date to survey the full reach and importance of, in the words of the Pritzker Prize jury, a committed teacher who is not only a role model for younger generation, but also an inspiration. About the series: Each book in TASCHEN s Basic Architecture series features: an introduction to the life and work of the architect the major works in chronological order information about the clients, architectural preconditions as well as construction problems and resolutions a list of all the selected works and a map indicating the locations of the best and most famous buildings approximately 120 illustrations (photographs, sketches, drafts and plans)"

The New Pavilions

Tents, bandstands, displays, places for sitting, listening, seeing and being seen...Pavilions have myriad forms and as many functions. For architects and designers, they offer unique opportunities to experiment with form, construction, material, structure, surface and texture, often as prototypes for larger buildings or as purely artistic pursuits. A pavilion's particular location also offers rich possibilities for interaction with the landscapes, streetscapes and peoplescapes around it. Pavilions can be temples to digital interaction or provide oases of surreal calm and isolation. This is a selection of the best examples produced in recent years. From the cutting- edge forms of Sou Fujimoto to Zaha Hadid's Chanel pavilion, from small structures created entirely out of farm waste to a mirrored carapace conceived by Olafur Eliasson, each pavilion featured provides a lesson in the extreme possibilities of built form and demonstrates that many of the biggest ideas in architecture start small.

Urban Rooftops

As urban living intensifies in density and numbers, the city landscape expands both outwards and upwards. Architects and urban designers craft new and experimental structures while also investigating existing buildings for potential reinvention or expansion. In particular, the roof of a building, once a perfunctory structural element, is now a city space in and of itself, beloved for the capacity to eke out further room for living or to craft inspiring refuges away from the bustle of the metropolis. This international selection of urban rooftops catalogs a new urban dimension. Through over 50 bars, restaurants, temporary art installations, and gardens, it testifies to the variety of intelligent and exuberant designs that grace city summits from Sydney to Hong Kong, Oslo to Chicago. Whether it’s the panoramic views, the exposure to the elements, or a slight giddiness that comes with height, we see just how the roof has nurtured not only architectural invention but a whole new facet and thrill to city living. Just like its predecessors Tree Houses and Cabins, Urban Rooftops features both brilliant photography and bright, contemporary illustration. As with all books in TASCHEN’s architecture series, it also celebrates both the established and the rising talents of the industry. Featured artists in this movement towards the skies include Pritzker Prize winners Norman Foster and Shigeru Ban, Jeffrey Inaba, Julien de Smedt (JDS), and landscape designers such as Ken Smith and Vladimir Djurovic.
