Tree Houses

The idea of climbing a tree for shelter, or just to see the earth from another perspective, is surely as old as humanity. Tree houses are chronicled in ancient civilizations and their lore crosses through the history of every part of the world where trees grow. This stunningly-illustrated study offers a tour of the best tree houses in the world, some designed by architects, others the work of unknown craftsmen. A teahouse, a restaurant, a hotel, a playhouse for children, or a perch from which to contemplate life--the tree house can take as many forms as the imagination can offer. In times of concern for sustainability and ecological responsibility, the tree house may also be the ultimate symbol of life in symbiosis with nature. Whether rustic or contemporary in style, tree houses make the most of space. Climb into this trove of tree houses and enjoy a new perspective on the world. 50 tree houses from around the world.

Niemeyer Oscar

The man who built the future. Seven decades of work from the Brazilian visionary. Now over 100 years old, Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer is still practicing - over seven decades since one of his first projects, a 1936 collaboration with Lucio Costa and Le Corbusier. A technical pioneer and one of the 20th century's most important architects, Niemeyer has designed close to 700 realized and unrealized buildings and, most notably, was the architect for the principal monuments in Brasilia, his homeland's futuristic capital city and his undisputed major masterpiece. The "New York Times" wrote on the occasion of his 100th anniversary: "In the 1940s, '50s and '60s he established himself as one of Modernism's greatest luminaries, infusing stark abstract forms with a beguiling tropical hedonism that reshaped Brazil's identity in the popular imagination and mesmerized architects around the globe." About the Series: Every book in TASCHEN's "Basic Architecture Series" features: approximately 120 images, including photographs, sketches, drawings, and floor plans; introductory essays exploring the architect's life and work, touching on family and background as well as collaborations with other architects; the most important works presented in chronological order, with descriptions of client and/or architect wishes as well as construction problems and resolutions; and an appendix including a list of complete or selected works, biography, bibliography, and a map indicating the locations of the architect's most famous buildings.

Álvaro Siza Complete Works 1954-2012

Complex simplicity. This is the seminal book on Portugal's master architect. When Alvaro Siza, one of the great figures of contemporary architecture, won the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 1992, the Jury citation described his shapes as "molded by light, [with] a deceptive simplicity about them; they are honest. They solve design problems directly...That simplicity, upon closer examination however, is revealed as great complexity. There is a subtle mastery underlying what appears to be natural creations." Born in Matosinhos, Portugal, in 1933, Siza created his own practice in Porto in 1954, and he has been a Professor of Construction at the University there since 1976. He received the European Community's Mies van der Rohe Prize in 1988 and the Praemium Imperiale in Japan in 1997, the Golden Lion at the 2002 Venice Architecture Biennale and the 2009 RIBA Gold Medal. He has built a large number of projects in Portugal, and worked on the restructuring of the Chiado area of Lisbon following the devastating 1988 fire. Siza designed both the Portuguese Pavilion for the 1998 Lisbon World's Fair and the 2005 Serpentine Pavilion in London in collaboration with Eduardo Souto de Moura. He completed the Serralves Foundation (Porto, 1998), and the Museum for the Ibere Camargo Foundation in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 2008. As for all previous TASCHEN architect's monographs, this book was realized in close collaboration with the architect and includes a full catalogue of his work to date.

Wood Architecture Now! 2

Living material - You'll be amazed what wood can do. As soon as the first men bravely moved out of their protective caves, they surely built protective structures out of wood. The ultimate renewable resource for architecture is thus the oldest, but also the most modern of materials. Thanks to computer-driven design and manufacturing techniques, wood can be cut and carved in the most astonishing new ways. Such innovative contributors to the work published in this volume as the German professor Achim Menges are showing the way to the creation of complex, almost living wood structures. Others like the young architects from WMR who are based in Santiago, Chile, show just how it is possible to build a dramatic two-story wood cabin overlooking the Pacific for just $ 30,000. Or imagine how an innovative polyurethane-coated wood canopy can cover and renew a whole area of the historic city of Seville (Metropol Parasol by Jurgen Mayer H.). Just as it can be simple and evocative, wood can be part of sophisticated structures like Snohetta's Norwegian Wild Reindeer Pavilion, with its CNC-milled timber wall. Economical, ecological, and fundamentally warm, wood architecture is as contemporary as it gets.

Architecture Now! Museums

Star architects from Zaha Hadid to Herzog & de Meuron have shaken up the formerly staid world of museum architecture, bringing bravura to new buildings and extensions. But the trend for new museums to opt for bold contemporary architecture goes well beyond the stunning work of Renzo Piano or Tadao Ando. Many less well-known architects have also designed remarkable places to exhibit art and artifacts. Some have provoked controversy, like Mexican architect Teodoro González de León's University Museum of Contemporary Art on the sprawling UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) campus. Others have been warmly welcomed, like the sweeping, light-filled Art Gallery of Ontario Extension by Toronto-born Frank O. Gehry, his first commission in his native city. Others point out new horizons for reclaiming brownfield sites and reviving derelict industrial structures: Nicholas Grimshaw's conversion of a disused 1960s blast furnace into Horno 3, a welcoming extra gallery space for the Mexican city of Monterrey's Museum of Steel is a case in point. In Cartagena, Spain, Rafael Moneo's decade-long work on the Museum of the Roman Theater culminated in a structure that engages visitors in an archaeological manner, taking them on a tour of history as well as the site itself. Here then are more than 50 projects by the major talents pushing the limits of contemporary museum design, from established masters to the latest generation of brilliant architects.

Shigeru ban XL

Shigeru Ban (born Tokyo, 1957) attended SCI-Arc in California and earned his degree at the Cooper Union School of Architecture in New York. Based in Tokyo and Paris, Ban consistently challenges accepted notions of architecture, designing a house without walls, or an exhibition space made from paper tubes and shipping containers. This monograph, compiled with the architect's collaboration, traces his career and features every built work of Shigeru Ban, showing clearly why he is one of the world's most innovative and significant architects. Unlike many of his peers, Ban can create remarkable residences and still find time to design emergency relief housing for disaster areas from Kobe to New Orleans. Often using paper or cardboard tubes as a structural element, his designs give new meaning to the term "Paper Architect."

Hadid, Updated Version

Building the future now. This is the iconic work of a singular architect. Zaha Hadid is a wildly controversial architect whose work remained largely unbuilt for years, despite awards and critical acclaim. Cabins

Ever since Henry David Thoreau’s described his two years, two months, and two days of cabin existence at Walden Pond, Massachusetts in Walden, or, Life in the Woods (1854), the idea of a refuge dwelling has seduced the modern psyche. In the past decade, as our material existence and environmental footprint has grown exponentially, architects around the globe have become particularly interested in the possibilities of the minimal, low-impact, and isolated abode. This new TASCHEN title, combining insightful text, rich photography and bright, contemporary illustrations by Marie-Laure Cruschi, explores how this particular architectural type presents special opportunities for creative thinking. In eschewing excess, the cabin limits actual spatial intrusion to the bare essentials of living requirements, while in responding to its typically rustic setting, it foregrounds eco-friendly solutions. As such, the cabin comes to showcase some of the most inventive and forward-looking practice of contemporary architecture, with Renzo Piano, Terunobu Fujimori, Tom Kundig and many fresh young professionals all embracing such distilled sanctuary spaces. The cabins selected for this publication emphasize the variety of the genre, both in terms of usage and geography. From an artist studio on the Suffolk coast in England to eco-home huts in the Western Ghats region of India, this survey is as exciting in its international reach as it is in its array of briefs, clients, and situations. Constant throughout, however, is architectural innovation, and an inspiring sense of contemplation and coexistence as people return to nature and to a less destructive model of being in the world.
