Santiago Calatrava is not only one of the worlds most prominent architects, but also an engineer and an artist. With recent projects such as the stadiums for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens or the new railway station in Ličge, Belgium, he has reach ed a level of undeniable notoriety in Europe and continues to move further ahead. The only architect ever to have his work exhibited at both the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, he is currently working on the main transportation hub for Ground Zero in Manhattan as well as the tallest building in the United States: the 160-story Chicago Spire Tower. Winner of the 2005 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal as well as numerous other prestigious awards, Cala trava is one of the greatest and most innovative architects alive. He collaborated extensively with Philip Jodidio in the preparation of this monograph that retraces his career thus far and places his architecture in the context of his art, where nat ure meets engineering. Zaha Hadid is a wildly controversial architect, who for many years built almost nothing, despite her designs winning prizes and critical acclaim. Some even said her work was unbuildable. Yet over the past decade she has completed numerous structures including the Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati (which the New York Times called ''the most important new building in America since the Cold War''), the Phaeno Science Center in Wolfsburg, Germany, and the Central Building of the new BMW Assembly Plant in Leipzig. Today, Hadid is firmly established among the élite of world architecture, her audacious and futuristic designs having catapulted her to international fame. Born in Baghdad and educated in London, where her practice is based, Hadid has designed radical architecture for over 30 years and is now the subject of this massive TASCHEN monograph. Covering her complete works to date, and all of her recent work from Dubai to Guangzhou, this XL tome demonstrates the progression of Hadid’s career—including not only buildings but also furniture and interior designs—with in-depth texts, spectacular photos, and her own drawings. Also included is a special section with translucent vellum paper allowing multiple layers of designs to be viewed at once or separately.

Jean Nouvel, winner of the 2008 Pritzker Prize, is widely regarded as France’s most original and important contemporary architect. From 1967 to 1970, he assisted influential architects Claude Parent and Paul Virilio, before creating his own practice in Paris. His first widely acclaimed project was the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris (1981–87). Since then he has completed the Lyon Opera House, the Euralille Shopping Center, Lille, and the Fondation Cartier, Paris. His major completed projects since 2000 include the Culture and Convention Center in Lucerne, Switzerland, the spectacular Agbar Tower in Barcelona, the extension of the Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid, the Quai Branly Museum in Paris, and the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Nouvel won the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Gold Medal in 2001 and the Pritzker Prize in 2008.. Jean Nouvel worked for five years with author Philip Jodidio on this prodigiously illustrated TASCHEN monograph, a book commensurate with the architect’s talent. Two 400-page hardcover volumes give the most complete overview to date of Jean Nouvel’s career, including works in progress such as the new Louvre in Abu Dhabi, the Philharmonie de Paris, and the MoMA extension in New York. The book’s graphic design and images were conceived and selected by the architect; in addition, the transparent printed dust jackets mimic the architect’s own tendency to play with contrasts and overlaid patterns.
