Malířské a kreslířské dílo Vlasty Vostřebalové Fischerové (1898-1963) bylo omezeno necelými dvaceti lety aktivní tvůrčí činnosti, ale na české meziválečné scéně patřilo k nejosobitějším projevům „nových realismů“. Autorka vycházela z epické dramatičnosti wolkerovské linie proletářského umění a s velkou dávkou fantazie a bizarní poetiky zachycovala lidské odcizení a mezní situace moderního života. V jejím díle se mísí všednodenní náměty s fantaskní poetikou a palčivou groteskností. Sociální apel mnoha jejích prací na druhé straně vyvažuje intimita. Na zvnitřnělé, místy až halucinační dimenzi její práce se podepsal i soukromý život: krátké, avšak nepříliš šťastné manželství s významným českým literátem a překladatelem Otokarem Fischerem. Kromě obrazů a kreseb kniha zpřístupňuje autorčinu rozsáhlou korespondenci adresovanou Fischerovi a věnuje se i dosud neprobádané práci Vlasty Vostřebalové Fischerové na poli architektury.

Prostorové rozpínání měst je dnes již reálnou skutečností a tento trend dále pokračuje téměř ve všech evropských městech.
