Duchovní prostředí bylo od samého počátku úzce spojeno s výtvarným uměním. Římskokatolická církev se tak v podstatě bezděky stala již záhy správkyní uměleckých pokladu nevyčíslitelné hodnoty a tím také převzala odpovědnost za správu podstatné části evropského kulturního dědictví. Zájem o výtvarné umění se tak stal základním podnětem ke snaze o jeho dokumentaci, popis a pochopení zákonitostí jeho vývoje.
