An Auteurist History of Film
Beginning in 2009, The Museum of Modern Art offered a weekly series of film screenings titled An Auteurist History of Film. Inspired by Andrew Sarris' seminal work "The American Cinema," which developed on the idea of "auteur theory" first discussed by the critics of "Cahiers du Cinéma" in the 1950s, the series presented cinematic works from MoMA's expansive collection with particular focus on the role of the director as artistic author. Featured works included those by D.W. Griffith, Fritz Lang, Walt Disney, Alfred Hitchcock, Akira Kurosawa, Federico Fellini, Satyajit Ray, Jean-Luc Godard, Eric Rohmer, Robert Altman, Werner Herzog, Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese and many more. For the five years that the series was presented, film curator Charles Silver wrote a concise post to accompany each screening. These texts described the place of each film in the oeuvre of its director as well as its significance to wider film history. Following the end of the series' long run, the Museum has collected these posts for publication, bringing together Silver's insightful and often humorous readings of the series' films into a single volume. This volume is an invaluable guide to key directors and works of cinema as well as an excellent introduction to auteur theory. Charles Silver joined the Department of Film at The Museum of Modern Art in 1970, and has helmed the Film Study Center for the past four decades. Among his numerous exhibitions are retrospectives for Elia Kazan, Roman Polanski, John Ford, Charlie Chaplin, Joan Blondell, The Hubleys, Agnieszka Holland, Anna Mae Wong, John Wayne and Sessue Hayakawa. Thanks to his dedication to access and belief in film as the most influential art form of the 20th century, rare are the thesis papers or books written on cinema in the past 40 years that do not thank him for his expert guidance.

Na počátku osmdesátých let uchvátil televizní diváky americký seriál Dallas, který bylo prostě nutné sledovat. Osudy příslušníků rodiny Ewingů vstupovaly týden co týden do obývacích pokojů nejprve v USA, ale brzy i v mnoha dalších zemích po celém světě (u nás až po r. 1989). Miliony diváků tak s napětím sledovaly další vývoj v dramatických vztazích bohaté rodiny texaských ropných magnátů a rančerů ze Southforku a postavy záludného J. R. či třeba jeho nešťastné ženy Sue Ellen, jež utápí svůj žal v alkoholu, se staly načas důležitou součástí sdílené kulturní encyklopedie. Kde se ale tato divácká fascinace a mimořádná popularita vzaly? Co přesně v utváření samotného seriálu ji způsobilo? Proč fiktivní zobrazení většinově nedostupné a vzdálené životní zkušenosti amerických boháčů vzbuzuje takový ohlas a zájem i v kontinentální Evropě? Co na Dallasu přitahuje mužské publikum a co na něm tak fascinuje ženské divačky? Otázky takového druhu si na počátku svého výzkumu položila tehdy začínající nizozemská badatelka Ien Angová, autorka knihy Divákem Dallasu (originál z r. 1982 nese název Het geval Dallas, ve světě je však monografie známá spíše pod svým anglickým titulem Watching Dallas). Při hledání odpovědí vyšla Angová z dopisů, které jí v odpověď na její inzerát uveřejněný ve společenském časopise pro ženy zaslali sami diváci (a mezi nimi především divačky). Většině z nich se Dallas líbil, i když odpovědělo i několik těch, kdo ho nemohli vystát, všichni se nicméně pokusili svůj svou fascinaci světem seriálu nějakým způsobem uchopit. Ien Angová jejich odpovědi pečlivě analyzovala, hledala jejich průniky a opakující se myšlenky - to vše při vědomí, že dobově běžným intelektuálním přístupem k produktům populární kultury (jejž sdílely i mnohé institucionální autority) bylo odmítavé pohrdání. Sama Angová takové ideologické předporozumění nechává stranou, vedena upřímný zájmem dozvědět se, jak přesně vzniká a funguje požitek ze sledování Dallasu, jak se má melodramatický charakter zobrazených přepjatých zápletek k divácké představě o vztazích a ubíjející každodennosti našich životů a jak zobrazení ženských hrdinek a jejich problémů vztahují současné divačky ke svým životům a svému vnímání postavení žen ve společnosti. Výsledkem tohoto tázání je čtivá a přístupná kniha, která má dodnes potenciál oslovovat nové generace čtenářů a která se po právu stala jedním ze zakladatelských kamenů studií populární kultury i mediálních studií. České vydání je doplněno o překlad metodologické kapitoly z nizozemského originálu, která není běžnou součástí anglických překladů monografie. Knihu uzavírá doslov Ireny Reifové, krátkou předmluvu k českému vydání napsala sama Ien Angová. - Vychází za podpory Ministerstva kultury ČR.
