The early motion picture industry exploded in the 1910s when middle class audiences became hooked on the beautiful storytelling images flashing by them onscreen. As movie attendance exploded, more workers were required to produce this riveting new form of entertainment. Largely created by immigrants, the film industry creatively and scientifically evolved over its first few decades thanks to the work of people outside the traditional ruling class—immigrants, people of color, women—partly as a result of elites denigrating the fledgling field. As the moving picture business transitioned from neophyte to powerhouse, young and ambitious rebels—both men and women—energized and revitalized its output. At the same time, American culture was evolving as women sought the right to vote and work outside traditional fields, unions exploded, and immigrants contributed to flourishing businesses.Mostly written out of history, women provided an integral component for popularizing silent film and making it an enormous success, paving the way for Golden Age Hollywood. They often pioneered practices and established trends, leading several fields in its early days. Women were integral inproducing enough films for exploding demand in the industry''s second decade. Men often resented their power and success, and as the studio system of massive factories and industrialization took hold, women found themselves out of favor and replaced.First Women of Hollywood will explore and illustrate the invaluable role and contributions of these mostly forgotten and unacknowledged pioneers.

The Prop
What are film props? What do they do? This book answers these questions by a close attention to those material objects that are used to construct cinematic worlds. The term "prop" is short for property. This truncated term's etymology belies the expansiveness of the concept and indicates the micro and macro scales at which the prop operates. Props are the material—often literal—furniture of cinema's diegetic reality. Props are also narrative agents: think of the animacy of objects in Jean Epstein's account of photogénie, the crystal egg in Risky Business, or the domestic bric-a-brac of Sirk's melodramas. The prop is central to production design and the construction of mise-en-scene. And yet, the prop has rarely—almost never—been taken as an object of analysis and theorization in its own right. This book begins by tracing the prop's curious but unacknowledged role in film theory, before proceeding to a series of theoretical speculations and close readings that bring the prop into focus. Analyses of scenes of "prop mastery" demonstrate the labor that props perform and enable, as well as the interpretive work they make possible. Across a variety of genres, modes, and historical contexts—studio filmmaking, art cinema, adult and avant-garde films—The Prop introduces readers to the notion of "prop value," a quality that puts the prop in proximity to the capitalist commodity, but also provides an ironic distance from the commodity's subjection to exchange value. Monografie o životě a díle P. A. Schenkirže, českého skladatele druhé poloviny 18. století, obsahuje řadu unikátních a dosud neznámých faktů zjištěných nejenom pečlivým studiem nově objevených pramenů z českých kostelních kůrů zpracovávaných v rámci programu DKRVO, oblast 2. hudební věda (Litomyšl, Teplice), ale také z rakouských klášterů. Studiem Souborného hudebního katalogu NK ČR a katalogu RISM se podařilo určit dataci děl a identifikovat i řadu autografů. Zcela novým zjištěním je skutečnost, že Schenkirž byl též nevšedně talentovaným hudebním dramatikem, o čemž svědčí úspěšné uvedení jeho nově identifikované hudby k pastorální gratulační divadelní hře pražským Národním divadlem. Tematický katalog Schenkiržových děl je zpracován jako příloha monografie v elektronické podobě. Publikace vychází česky se souběžným anglickým překladem v ediční řadě Hudebního oddělení NK ČR Varia de musica.

When the Carry On Stopped looks at how the Carry On film series made its painful transition from one film company, Anglo-Amalgamated, to another, the Rank Organisation. In examining this little-known but fascinating story, the growth of Anglo-Amalgamated is highlighted through the success of its owners, partners Stuart Levy and Nat Cohen. Levy’s sudden death in 1966 encouraged Cohen to ditch the Carry Ons in favour of more prestigious feature films.Without a film distributor, the series’ producer Peter Rogers, was forced to search for another, eventually finding the series a new home at Rank. However, Rank was unwilling to endorse the work of a rival and so dropped the ‘Carry On’ title. The Carry On series looked doomed.When the Carry On Stopped also sheds new light on the careers of the Carry On stars at this critical time. We learn of Barbara Windsor’s involvement in the stage disaster Twang!!, of Jim Dale’s stage success, Sid James’ first heart attack and Charles Hawtrey losing his mother. The book calls out the fat shaming of Joan Sims as one of the many injustices shown to her by the producer.This is essential reading for Carry On fans and those interested in the machinations of the British entertainment industry in the 1960’s.
