Bowie-ról lepereg minden kategorizálási szándék. Bármit is mondunk róla, azonnal érvek hadával igazolhatjuk az ellenkezőjét. Mainstream művész volt, akinek első, 1967-es albuma is biztos kézzel megformált, remek dalok sorát tartalmazza, mégsem lett igazán híres egészen 1972-es, Ziggy Stardust című lemezének megjelenéséig.
