Prvá pozostáva z rozsiahlych analýz charakteristických krajín štyroch exemplárnych maliarov, Paula Cézanna, Caspara Davida Friedricha, Paula Kleeho a Guo Xiho. Sallis sa následne obracia k vlastným spisom týchto umelcov – traktátom, esejam a listom – o umení vo všeobecnosti a krajinomaľbe zvlášť, a zasadzuje ich do filozofického kontextu.

Anna-Eva Bergman a Hans Hartung: A nic nás nerozdělí
Seurat
Georges Seurat (1859-1891) was only 31 when he died, but during his short life he created hundreds of drawings, oil sketches, and paintings on canvas that introduced a fresh perspective in European painting. As a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he carefullly observed the work of Delacroix and became fascinated with the interplay between light and color. In doing so, he developed Divisionism, using small dabs of paint from the point of the brush to create pointilist images that shimmered with luminescence and hinted at movement. In this accessible introduction to Seurat, meet an artist driven by a need to capture nature and the simple pleasures of life through a new language of painting.
Hokusai. Beyond the Great Wave
An important publication on Hokusai's remarkable late work, originally published to accompany the acclaimed retrospective at the British Museum and now available in a compact edition.
Hokusai (1760-1849) created sublime works during the last thirty years of his life, right up to his death at the age of almost ninety. This book presents fresh scholarship on the paintings and prints created by the artist during his final three decades, bringing together the finest examples to be found in Japan and around the world.
Hokusai's personal beliefs are studied here through major brush paintings, drawings, woodblock prints and illustrated books. This publication gives due attention to the contribution of Hokusai's daughter Eijo (Oi), an accomplished artist in her own right. Hokusai continually explored the mutability and minutiae of natural phenomena in his art. His late subjects and styles were based on a mastery of eclectic Japanese, Chinese and European techniques and an encyclopedic knowledge of nature, myth and history. The collection of Hokusai's works draws on the finest to be found in Japan and around the world, making this a uniquely valuable overview of the artist's late career.

A všude kolem temná krása rozkladu.

Hokusai. Shunga
Beneath the Kimono
The master’s complete erotica, gathered in one arresting volume
If you think you know Hokusai (1760–1849), think again. Long before The Great Wave, the great master turned his hand (and eye) to something altogether more intimate. From maidservants and wives to courtesans, lovers, and curious onlookers – and, yes, an infamous pair of frisky octopuses – Hokusai’s shunga (literally “spring pictures”) are bold, joyful, and often laugh-out-loud funny.
This comprehensive portfolio brings together eight complete books and print sets from 1786–1823, with many of their accompanying narratives penned by the artist himself. Blending the visual with the verbal, the pages brim with exaggerated anatomy, impish voyeurism, tender exchanges, and a surprisingly egalitarian attitude to enjoyment for both sexes.
In contrast to the prudery of 18th-century Europe, Edo-period (1603–1868) Japan accepted sexuality as a natural part of life. With shunga officially banned but tolerated in practice, many reputable artists navigated government censorship to embrace the genre with gusto, albeit under pseudonyms. These works were made to entertain, to arouse, and even used for good luck – samurai carried them as talismans when going into battle. Technical innovations in printing during Hokusai’s lifetime allowed for rich colours and exquisitely rendered textiles, but the content remained delightfully human: full of risky rendezvous, stolen moments, and scenes of marital (or extra-marital) bliss.
Realized with new photography of these rare works, and complemented by an in-depth introduction and explanatory essays, this retrospective offers gorgeous glimpses into a lesser-known but wildly imaginative thread in Hokusai’s over 70-year career: proof, perhaps, that great masters have their guilty pleasures too.
Edvard Munch: A to Z
Following key terms from A–Z, these books illuminate little-known aspects and shed new light on familiar motifs and themes. This time about the artist Edvard Munch
Edvard Munch is one of the most famous painters of the early 20th century and a role model for many artists to this day. His legendary painting Scream even inspired a popular emoji, something that no other artist has ever achieved. Munch had a unique way of placing himself as an individual in the foreground of his art, making his psychological state the subject of his work. In doing so, he created a personal and at the same time universal “diary of the soul” that still captivates us today, as international exhibitions of the Norwegian artist show. In twenty-six short chapters, from A for anxiety to G for ghosts, R for revolvers and Z for zoo, familiar but also surprising aspects of his art and life are presented in a compelling way.

Egon Schiele: Last Years 1914-1918
The body of work by the eccentric artist Egon Schiele (1890-1918), created over a period of just ten years, is known above all through his major paintings and those drawings from between 1910 and around 1913/14 in which he processed his own emotional states and expressed the inner turmoil of an entire generation in his depictions of the human figure. His later works after 1914, which differ markedly from his earlier ones, and are less well known. His lines became more measured, flowing, and organic, and his figures filled out and were more realistic. In retrospect, the personal and historical changes and events from 1914 - the outbreak of war, his marriage to Edith Harms (1893-1918), and the tedium of army life - clearly had a profound effect on his artistic output.
Among other things, Edith Schiele's almost unknown diary (1915-1918), in which she recorded her experiences, thoughts, and feelings in these difficult times, is published in full.
Damien Hirst - Drawings
A tiger shark in formaldehyde. A diamond-encrusted skull. Damien Hirst is one of the most important contemporary artists and a legend in the Young British Artist movement of the 1990s. He planned his iconic paintings, sculptures and installations through drawings and sketchbooks, and these can now be seen in a museum exhibition for the first time.
The publication provides an opportunity to glance over the shoulder of a great contemporary artist engrossed in his creative process: since the early 1980s, Damien Hirst has used drawings and sketches to plan his celebrated works. He has also created drawings to accompany his paintings and sculptures, to help visualise their core ideas. Among his designs are a drawing machine and the graphic work of fictitious old masters. In this superbly produced new volume, which retains the character of a sketchbook, a star artist reveals a new aspect to his oeuvre.

Hiroshige. One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, 45th Ed.
City lights and cherry trees
The woodblock prints of Tokyo that captured Europe's imagination
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was one of the last great artists in the ukiyo-e tradition. Literally meaning “pictures of the floating world,” ukiyo-e was a particular genre of art that flourished between the 17th and 19th centuries and came to characterize the Western world’s visual idea of Japan. In many ways images of hedonism, ukiyo-e scenes often represented the bright lights and attractions of Edo (modern-day Tokyo): beautiful women, actors and wrestlers, city life, and spectacular landscapes.
Though he captured a variety of subjects, Hiroshige was most famous for landscapes, with a final masterpiece series known as “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo” (1856–1858), which depicted various scenes of the city through the seasons, from bustling shopping streets to splendid cherry orchards.
This reprint is made from one of the finest complete original sets of woodblock prints belonging to the Ota Memorial Museum of Art in Tokyo. It pairs each of the 120 illustrations with a description, allowing readers to immerse themselves in these beautiful, vibrant vistas that became paradigms of Japonisme and inspired Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Art Nouveau artists alike, from Vincent van Gogh to James McNeill Whistler.
