Marvel Comics Library : X-Men. 1963–1966
When Marvel publisher Martin Goodman asked Stan Lee to deliver another new team book for his line of comics, he had no idea he’d be getting something like The X-Men. In fact, nobody could have imagined the extraordinary phenomenon the X-Men would eventually grow into?not Goodman, not Lee, not even the forward-thinking futurist Jack Kirby. What they started out as was a charming, ragtag team of misfits, devised by Lee and Kirby to be mutants?youngsters born with “X-tra” powers thrust upon them not by accidentally crossing paths with cosmic rays or a nuclear blast, but by the fate of birth?led by a no-nonsense professor who trained them to become heroes that could protect the world from menaces, mutant and otherwise.
The first years of storytelling laid the foundation for much of what has put the X-Men at the crossroads of comics and popular culture: Hounded by a public that fears and misunderstands them, mutantkind find themselves at the heart of their own civil rights struggle; Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Angel, Beast, and Iceman found safety amongst themselves despite the challenges that set them apart from others in society; and Professor Xavier lined up against his ideological foe, Magneto, who had assembled a Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to take the fight for their self-preservation directly to humankind.
Along the way, Lee and Kirby?who were on fire taking comics into the Marvel Age?introduced a menagerie of villains and supporting characters that would become mainstays of Marvel and its lore: the super-powered siblings Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch; the formidable Blob; the unstoppable Juggernaut; the jungle dweller from the Savage Land, Ka-Zar; the demigod from the stars, the Stranger; and Bolivar Trask and his army of mutant-hunting Sentinels. And as Lee and Kirby gave way to new talents so they could move on to new corners of the Marvel Universe, Atlas era art veteran Werner Roth teamed with writing newcomer and future X-Men legend Roy Thomas to begin their long run on the title.
This edition features the first 21 stories of our favorite oddball super heroes from 1963 to 1966. The most pristine, pedigreed comics have been cracked open and photographed for reproduction in close collaboration with Marvel and the Certified Guaranty Company. Each page has been photographed as printed more than half a century ago, then digitally remastered using modern retouching techniques to correct problems with the era’s inexpensive, imperfect printing?as if hot off of a world-class 1960s printing press.
In addition to these seminal tales are an in-depth essay by X-Men writer Fabian Nicieza as well as original art, photographs, and memorabilia from the early years of X.

In 1986, Sylvan High School in Crystal Palacewas a broken school, with a pass rate of 9 per cent, truancy of 60 per cent andteachers who seldom lasted longer than six months. Today, the Harris CityAcademy Crystal Palace, Sylvan’s successor, is hailed as one of the bestschools in the country. This transformation was the blueprint for anational education revolution. Philip Harris’s achievements paved the way forthe academies movement, and academies now account for nearly half of England’sschools. The same remarkable effect can be seen throughout the HarrisFederation, the most successful multi-academy trust in England, which runsfifty-nine state academies with around 50,000 students and 5,000 members ofstaff. Every single one is rated ‘Good’ or better by Ofsted, and seven wererecently listed in an international report as ‘World Class’. The Harris revolution has driven theextraordinary improvements in our education system over the past twenty years. In 2009, England lagged at twenty-seventh in the world for maths andtwenty-fifth for reading. Today, reports show it is among the best-performingcountries in Europe. All Can Achieveis both the inspiring account of how Philip Harris took on the near-impossiblechallenge of turning around failing state schools and the inside story of aseismic change in English education.

Urban landscapes in Iron Age Iberia
Urban Landscapes in Iron Age Iberia provides an up-to-date synthesis on the urbanism of Iron Age hillforts and oppida of Iberia. The emergence of large and complex fortified settlements is a characteristic phenomenon of the period between the Late Iron Age and the expansion of the Roman Empire (4th–1st centuries BC) in extensive areas of Central and Western Europe. In this geographical context the Iberian Peninsula has a key position between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. A vast Spanish and Portuguese scientific literature has revealed a very diverse scenario with different paths for the development of complex urbanism, in some cases presenting clear alternatives to the Mediterranean models introduced by Phoenician-Punic, Greek, and Roman influence. The book integrates a series of novel contributions from across Iberian archaeology, with an explicit examination of urban structures using a rigorous multidisciplinary approach. Together they demonstrate the potential value and relevance of archaeological data for Urbanization Studies.
Impossibility of Nothingness
In an extraordinary late flowering, these new poems — written in his nineties — are still characteristically and unmistakeably the crafted work of Ian McDonald, and they are also remarkably other.McDonald’s hallmark qualities are all still here: a capacity for genuine compassion; an exploration of the complex nature of love; a profound engagement with the natural world; and character vignettes, powerfully drawn, empathetic but never sentimental, that are an essential archive of a disappearing Guyana. These late poems bring new angles on McDonald’s perennial themes. There is the exploration of memory and intimations of mortality, a focus on grandchildren, the garden and the sheer wonder of being alive at the poet’s great age. But in addition, there is something new-minted and unrestrained about the language of these later poems that is remarkable. These poems are, if anything, even more surprising, moving and inspirational than those pieces beloved by generations of Caribbean readers. There is a kind of carefree truthfulness about the poems in The Impossibility of Nothingness. Richly imagistic, the poems feel elemental, written without the constraint of wanting approval or applause but because they demanded to be written. As he says in the final line of the short title poem – which is an assertion of the possibility of momentary joy in even the bleakest of situations – “I record this just in case it’s true”.

The Wise and Their Works
The Wise and Their Works celebrates the 175th anniversary of the Great Exhibition in 2026. The men who inspired the Great Exhibition of 1851 - Henry Cole, Sir Robert Peel and above all Prince Albert himself - were at the centre of an extraordinary combination of manufacturing, commercial skill and political vision which made Victorian Britain an unparalleled success story. In this celebratory book, A. N. Wilson examines the legacy they left behind: their idealistic beliefs about free trade, decency and parliamentary democracy, and their ultimate vision of the human race at peace with prosperity spreading, while poverty and warfare were consigned to history. While their loftier ambitions may not have come to pass, these enterprising men did leave behind a little known but hugely influential organisation, the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, which still supports industry, science and art in the UK. Skillfully delving into this rich and fascinating history, Wilson takes us on a journey into the heart of the progressive Victorian dream, and where it has left us today.
Recover Me
Getting clean was just the beginning... DJ Fat Tony has lived a thousand lives: celebrated nightlife icon, survivor of decades-long addiction to drugs, alcohol and sex, and a LGBTQ activist who navigated trauma, abuse, and the AIDS epidemic. In Recover Me, Tony charts his journey from the hard graft of addiction to self-acceptance, affirming that recovery is not a destination but an ongoing commitment to accountability. Tony's story is marked by setbacks - dishonesty, victimhood, toxic relationships, and relapses into old behaviours - but also by moments of breakthrough and growth. He learns to navigate the complexities of early recovery, the allure of chaos and drama, and the necessity of honest self-inventory. Mixed with stories that are darkly humorous and oftentimes painful, Tony also gives advice on how to make amends, rebuild family relationships, and develop healthy boundaries, both with others and yourself. Written with expertise from integrative therapist Tara Day, the book offers therapeutic insights and reframes addiction through a trauma-informed, psychological lens to explore the nature of addiction and the lifelong process of healing. This is recovery with all the mess left in. No twelve-step sainthood, no empty promises. Just the truth about what it takes to break cycles, build boundaries, and find your own version of happy ever after - even if you still think you don't deserve it. For anyone battling addiction, shame, or just the weight of their own story, Recover Me shows that recovery doesn't end, but deeper healing is always possible.
Ukazuje, jak kdysi ústřední postavení plodné bohyně Země – matky a dárkyně života – postupně nahradily kulty mužských božstev spojených s mocí, válkou a zákonem. Autor zde zkoumá mytologické kořeny judaismu, křesťanství, islámu a zoroastrismu a sleduje jejich vzájemné ovlivňování v průběhu dějin.
