Consciousness Came First

Aimed at the general rather than the specialist academic reader, it is essential reading for all those attempting to unravel the mysteries of life in the modern age.? Based on his monumental award-winning four-volume work Unfolding Consciousness: Exploring the Living Universe and the Intelligent Powers in Nature and Humans, it is arguably the most radical and persuasive reappraisal of the subject in decades. It demonstrates that consciousness is essentially a non-physical phenomenon. Exploring the subtle and invisible aspects of human existence Consciousness Came Firs? lso provides persuasive evidence for timeless cosmic principles which, from the distant past, have permeated all science, philosophy and religion. It demonstrates how ?occult? science can solve those riddles which remain an enigma to its mainstream counterpart. This erudite book, written and researched for more than twenty years, boldly questions the bogus but pervasive certainties which characterise contemporary thinking about life, death and the wider universe. Consciousness Came Firs? s a book whose time has come. It is a book to shatter illusions. It is a book that will change minds.
Polis
A definitive new history of the origins, evolution, and scope of the ancient Greek city-stateThe Greek polis, or city-state, was a resilient and adaptable political institution founded on the principles of citizenship, freedom, and equality. Emerging around 650 BCE and enduring to 350 CE, it offered a means for collaboration among fellow city-states and social bargaining between a community and its elites—but at what cost? Polis proposes a panoramic account of the ancient Greek city-state, its diverse forms, and enduring characteristics over the span of a millennium. In this landmark book, John Ma provides a new history of the polis, charting its spread and development into a common denominator for hundreds of communities from the Black Sea to North Africa and from the Near East to Italy. He explores its remarkable achievements as a political form offering community, autonomy, prosperity, public goods, and spaces of social justice for its members. He also reminds us that behind the successes of civic ideology and institutions lie entanglements with domination, empire, and enslavement. Ma’s sweeping and multifaceted narrative draws widely on a rich store of historical evidence while weighing in on lively scholarly debates and offering new readings of Aristotle as the great theoretician of the polis. A monumental work of scholarship, Polis transforms our understanding of antiquity while challenging us to grapple with the moral legacy of an idea whose very success centered on the inclusion of some and the exclusion of others.

Quiet Ones
QuinnI've always had too many men in my life. My father, brothers, and nephews. They run this town, and although I've never given them a reason to worry, they treat me like I'm made of glass. They're wrong, though. I've got it all together - college graduated by twenty-one and a business owner with a perfect record. But I have one secret: I raced to grow up in case he ever came home. Lucas Morrow grew up with us, but he left when I was thirteen. I've waited and worked to be sure everything is perfect when I see him again. But I've waited years and maybe it's time to move on, get my own place and be my own person with new friends. It's summer after all and I am my brothers' sister. Did they really think the apple fell that fa? ucasShe thinks her family are the only men watching her. So innocent. And I want to keep her that way. Even though I'm twelve years older, we were always the odd ones out.. She gravitated to me, and I always made sure she wasn't alone. When I left, I told myself she'd be fine without me. But really, it was just an excuse to escape the guilt. I only meant to come back for a few days, but she's grown up, her brothers are distracted, and one bad decision after another is circling her. As well as old ghosts. And old enemies. She doesn't want a babysitter anymore, and if she ever finds out why I left town, she'll know why I'm not the best role model. But I'm still the older one. And she still needs supervision.
Plays Well with Others
Dating lessons from my American football-playing best friend? Sign me up!
At the glittery break-up party she throws for herself, Rachel Dumont envisions lifting a glass to celebrate being free and single again. What she actually does: Drink too much champagne and blurt out to her best guy friend that she'd really like to get back on the horse. She doesn't expect Carter Hendrix's answer to be to volunteer himself.
With his sinful brown eyes and too-good-to-be-true body, it'd be no hardship for Rachel to say yes, though she certainly doesn't want him to feel obligated to, um, service her just because her failed, loveless marriage was an s-e-x desert. But since the charming and confident professional American football star owes five public dates to his dating app sponsor, Rachel and Carter make a deal to help each other out.
Pretty soon, the public how-to-date lessons turn into, ahem, very private ones. And Rachel's a star student, graduating quickly from flirty banter and lingering looks to toe-curling, sheet-grabbing, mind-blowing hours of physical education. The problem? Turns out learning to date again feels a lot like the real thing.
Can Rachel and Carter's friendship withstand all these late-night bedroom sessions? Especially since she's suddenly longing for her best friend, and there's nothing fake about her feelings…
Fast Lane
He's the campus bad boy.
She's his neighbour's ex.
Who thought becoming roommates was a good idea?
Lane O'Neill doesn't do drama, and his plan for senior year of college is simple: run the Campus Drivers ride-share app he co-founded with his best friends, cruise campus in his beloved vintage car, and enjoy the attention that comes with the ride. No strings attached.
So when Lane stumbles upon a dishevelled woman asleep in his apartment building hallway, every instinct tells him to keep walking. After all, he doesn't do commitment. Unfortunately, Lois is freshly dumped, newly homeless, and a walking magnet for chaos. She's everything Lane avoids - yet somehow impossible to ignore.
That's how he ends up with a temporary roommate, just until Lois can afford a new place. Easy enough. Except her relentless optimism and stubborn heart have an annoying knack for slipping past his carefully built walls.
Too bad Lois is done playing the good girl, because she's about to break every rule he's ever lived by.
Pick this up if you love: opposites attract, frenemies to lovers, grumpy/sunshine, slow burn/yearning, lots of sexual banter, forced promixity, found family.

The Committee of Men
James Ciano’s debut collection, The Committee of Men, explores the cycles of violence men inflict on one another and themselves, examining how silence, shame, and inherited expectations shape masculine identity. Rooted in the speaker’s experience as a college athlete from a family of athletes—including a father who is a high school football coach—these poems confront the emotional weight of tradition and the often-unspoken struggles of male intimacy, mental illness, and familial pressure. Through sharp lyricism and emotional honesty, Ciano delves into themes of belonging and exile, accountability and forgiveness, and the quiet damage done by historically unexamined masculinity, asking what it means to break these generational cycles without severing connection, and how healing might emerge in places where vulnerability is discouraged or denied. The result is a collection that is both unflinching and deeply humane—an urgent, resonant debut that refuses to look away. The Committee of Men also includes a foreword by acclaimed poet David St. John, whose introduction situates Ciano’s work within a broader conversation about masculinity and poetic tradition, and underscores the collection’s emotional depth and significance.

Judith Namala
Translating a popular song from Luganda into English, Moses spins a fictional story of housework and domestic labor across 40 years of Ugandan historySerubiri Moses’ Judith Namala: A Novella, the author’s fiction debut, is an experiment in adaptation, translation and genre. Unfolding across short vignettes of fiction, poetry, Ugandan history, art criticism and journalistic reportage, Moses’ narrative is also an exercise in translation as fictocriticism: unraveling the lyrics to a popular Ugandan song into an expansive new approach to storytelling.Serubiri Moses is a Ugandan author and curator based in New York City. He is an adjunct faculty member in Art History at Hunter College, CUNY, and a visiting faculty member at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College.

The volume advocates for: - the adoption of financing mechanisms that are not only sustainable but also adaptable to the challenges posed by climate change, biodiversity loss, and the emergence of zoonotic diseases - a shift towards financing that supports robust veterinary infrastructure and proactive health measures - considering global discourse on the most effective ways to mobilize resources for the collective benefit of all species and the planet. Part of a wider series that provides a blend of technical insight, strategic analysis, and practical approaches to enhancing animal health, this book is a first step to achieving poverty reduction and improved human welfare.
