The Shelter Cycle
"A beautifully crafted, beautifully felt novel . . . Rock''s rendering of place is, as usual, flawless. He knows terrain so well, both geographical and human, where we hide and where we can be found. The writing is fierce, smart, and moving. This is the real deal." —Percival Everett, author of the Pulitzer Prize–winner JamesThe Shelter Cycle tells the story of two children, Francine and Colville, who grew up in the Church Universal and Triumphant, a religion that predicted the world could end in the late 1980s. While their parents built underground shelters to withstand the impending Soviet missile strike, Francine and Colville played in the Montana wilderness, where invisible spirits watched over them. When the prophesized apocalypse did not occur, the sect’s members resurfaced and the children were forced to grow up in a world they believed might no longer exist.Twenty years later, Francine and Colville are reunited while searching for an abducted girl. Haunted by memories and inculcated beliefs, they must confront the Church’s teachings. If all the things they were raised to believe were misguided, why then do they suddenly feel so true?

Hollywood
In this engaging and readable book, Peter Decherney tells the story of Hollywood, from its nineteenth-century origins to the emergence of internet media empires. He recounts how the studio system rose out of the ashes of Thomas Edison''s trust to create the handful of companies that have dominated global screens and imaginations for more than 100 years. Throughout, he reveals that the elements we take to be a natural part of the Hollywood experience--stars, genre-driven storytelling, blockbuster franchises, etc.--are really the product of cultural, political, and commercial forces. In many ways, Hollywood has remained the same for over a century. It has always been a global industry based in the U.S., and its storytelling has always unfolded across media, adapting plays, book, and comics and spinning off product tie-ins, television series, and social media campaigns. But major events have also continually remade Hollywood. The studios have weathered wars, disruptive new technologies, and competition by adopting a strategy of risk management and assimilation. This book explores the challenges of new technologies, including sound, home video, and computer graphics. And it examines Hollywood''s responses to World War II, independent film movements, and regulations imposed by Washington.Hollywood: A Very Short Introduction is filled with discussions of well-known movies, stars, and directors, encapsulating the past century of research on Hollywood while adding many original insights and stories. It is the perfect introduction for readers who want to better understand the history and functioning of our screen-saturated world.ABOUT THE SERIES:The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. The Makoto Murders
A pitch-black, Dexter-like thriller from the winner of the 2024 Crime Writers’ Association’s Debut Dagger, in which a Tokyo paparazzo commits murders in order to generate the photos his magazine’s readership ghoulishly demands. A razor-sharp skewering of our darkest fantasies and obsession with true crime for fans of Bella Mackie’s How to Kill Your Family, Oyinkan Braithwaite’s My Sister, The Serial Killer, and hit HBO crime drama Tokyo Vice.
A pitch-black, Dexter-like thriller from the winner of the 2024 Crime Writers’ Association’s Debut Dagger, in which a Tokyo paparazzo commits murders in order to generate the photos his magazine’s readership ghoulishly demands. A razor-sharp skewering of our darkest fantasies and obsession with true crime for fans of Bella Mackie’s How to Kill Your Family and Oyinkan Braithwaite’s My Sister, The Serial Killer.
Ken Kato is a half-British, half-Japanese photojournalist working for a low-brow weekly magazine in Tokyo. He achieved fame with a photograph of a boy who drowned in the tsunami that hit Japan in 2011, who he could have saved had he not been more concerned with finding the right light and composition for his shot.
Four years later, he has failed to repeat that success and, facing irrelevancy (and, worse, redundancy), he decides to turn serial killer to generate his own attention-grabbing pictures – for which he’s inevitably always first on the scene. His magazine then publishes the pictures, causing a sensation in a society where murder is almost unheard of, and tripling its sales figures.
Hoping to impress his colleague Hayashi’s estranged wife Makoto, who he is stalking after a short affair (though she clearly sees things differently), Kato murders only men and women with the same name as her. Inevitably the police are suspicious, but can find no evidence as he is meticulous in his planning and execution. Kato’s editor is also suspicious, but is willing to ignore the evidence in front of him as sales boom.
A pitch-dark satire on where ambition will take us, as well as our ghoulish obsession with true crime and our fascination with morally repellent serial killers (especially if they’re good-looking and charismatic), The Makoto Murders asks plenty of uncomfortable questions of the reader while never forgetting it’s first and foremost a page-turning thriller.
Diplomatic Adventures
Moscow in the Cold War. Karachi during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. Buenos Aires at the time of Perón’s death. Three critical chapters of twentieth-century history – and as a young diplomat, Tony Rossiter had a box seat.In Moscow in 1968, Western diplomats were kept under surveillance, their flats were bugged, and they were harassed by the KGB. From Moscow, Tony went to Karachi, a quasi-colonial world of servants and snobby expatriates. When war broke out, his young family huddled together as bomb blasts shook the walls. After a week of air attacks, women and children were belatedly evacuated. Transferred to Buenos Aires, it was out of the frying pan into the fire. Tony arrived, shortly after Perón’s reinstatement as president, as the Montoneros urban guerrillas were stepping up terrorist attacks against Western targets.Unlike the memoirs of most former diplomats, this book is not about high-level bureaucracy. Instead, it provides rare insight into the day-to-day life of a young man working at the coalface. Rossiter’s background was unusual for his era, and this vivid and evocative memoir offers a unique glimpse behind the curtain of international diplomacy.
