Spis, jehož originálu a latinským překladům se dostalo v moderních edicích názvů Physiologus Graecus a Physiologus Latinus, sestavil neznámý řecký autor působící nejspíše ve 2. století v Alexandrii. Využil přitom poznatky o pozoruhodných vlastnostech zvířat, stromů, kamenů a některých postav řecké mytologie, o nichž se dočetl v řeckých, římských, egyptských a dalších starověkých pramenech, a svou kompilaci doplnil citacemi z Písma a alegorickými výklady. Ačkoli toto drobné dílo není významné rozsahem a neoplývá složitými filosofickými myšlenkami, příběhy jeho autora fascinovaly široké publikum, neboť se promítly do řady teologických spisů, jež vznikaly v prvních staletích křesťanství, i do komentářů středověkých exegetů, výrazně ovlivnily několik literárních žánrů středověké literatury a inspirovaly rovněž knižní malíře k poutavým výtvarným interpretacím. Okolnostem vzniku tohoto díla, jeho inspiračním zdrojům, tématům, s nimiž se v něm čtenář setkává, i jeho vlivu na pozdější středověké texty je věnován první, monografický svazek této dvoudílné publikace.

Ve druhém svazku publikace se ke čtenáři dostává překlad latinské verze B Physiologu, doplněný komentářem sledujícím recepci jednotlivých výkladů ve středověké odborné literatuře a v knižní malbě. Ve třiceti sedmi kapitolách zde latinský překladatel představuje několik desítek zástupců přírody, jejichž neobvyklá podoba a pozoruhodné chování či vlastnosti mají křesťanu připomínat Kristovu zvěst a oběť, kterou přinesl pro záchranu lidského rodu, a být mu kladným či záporným příkladem v jeho životě: panter, který k sobě přivádí svým libým dechem všechna ostatní zvířata, je poukazem na Krista, který lahodností své zvěsti přivádí k sobě každého člověka; obludné mořské sirény, které svým omamným zpěvem lákají do své blízkosti námořníky, aby je pak zahubily, jsou zase výstrahou před ďáblem a jeho pokušeními; láskyplné chování dudčích mláďat, která se v dospělosti starají o své staré rodiče, má být pro každého člověka upozorněním na to, že nemá zapomínat na dobré vztahy v rodině; a had, který si zacpává uši, aby neslyšel hlas zaříkávače, je varováním pro ty, kdo jsou hluší ke slovům evangelia. Ze dvou částí, věcné a symbolické, z nichž se skládá každá kapitola, je to tedy právě ona druhá část, která stojí v centru pozornosti autora, jehož titul physiologus neoznačuje toho, kdo se zabývá primárně přírodou a je znalcem rozmanitých přírodních objektů a jevů, nýbrž toho, kdo je spíše exegetou přírody, tedy tím, kdo její jednotlivosti vykládá podle zákonů křesťanské víry a snaží se povznést člověka nad hmotné obrazy a vést ho prostřednictvím poznání přírody k poznání Boha.
