Lake Effect
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of THE NEST, a stunning new novel about adultery, first love and other family secrets… 'Sparkling… a joyful classic in the making' JENNY JACKSON, New York Times bestselling author of Pineapple Street 'I could not put it down!' SHELBY VAN PELT, author of Remarkably Bright Creatures It’s 1977 and an air of restlessness has settled on the residents of Cambridge Road in Rochester, New York. When Nina Larkin is given a copy of The Joy of Sex by her newly divorced friend, she can no longer dismiss the nearly non-existent intimacy of her marriage. Just as her oldest child, Clara, is falling in love for the first time, Nina finds herself longing for the forbidden: a midlife awakening. An intoxicating fling with a neighbour brings Nina a freedom she never thought possible—but also risks the reputations of both families and unravels Clara’s world, just as she stands on the threshold of adulthood. Years later Clara, now a successful food stylist in New York City, has never been able to move past the long-ago scandal. Drawn back home by the pull of a family wedding and wrestling with her own demons, she makes a pivotal decision that turns her life upside down. Written with Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney’s signature humour and insight, LAKE EFFECT is a wise and probing look at love and desire, mothers and daughters, loss and grief, and what we owe the people we love most.
The Accommodation of Democracy
In The Accommodation of Democracy, Thibaud Marcesse investigates the implementation of a large poverty alleviation program, the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme or NREGS, in Uttar Pradesh, one of India''s poorest and most populated states. The product of legislation passed by India''s parliament in 2005, NREGS is unique in that it creates an employment guarantee for all rural citizens to 100 days of work at a statutory wage rate. It is also the embodiment of a push to democratize local government in India and to empower citizens to make claims on the state. But, as the author argues, the implementation of NREGS has varied significantly, both among Indian states, and at the local level within the different Indian states. Through the use of various data sources, along with qualitative insights from a rural district of Uttar Pradesh, Marcesse develops his theory of democratic accommodation, where the claims made by citizens are not only shaped by levels of economic and status-based inequality, but also by the intervention of local elected officials and bureaucrats. A sobering account of actual democratic practice in the world''s largest democracy, The Accommodation of Democracy highlights that while local level democratization has considerably expanded the scope of political participation at the local level in India, it has yet to translate into a meaningful democratic deepening among its rural communities.

Travelling
Celebrated music critic Ann Powers explores the life and career of the legendary Joni Mitchell.
What you are about to read is not a standard account of the life and work of Joni Mitchell. Instead, it's a tale of long journeying through a life that changed popular music: of a homesick wanderer forging ahead on routes of her invention, and of me on her trail, heading toward the ringing of her voice.
One of the most celebrated artists of her generation, Joni Mitchell has inspired countless musicians and writers, while never stopping still herself.
In Travelling, celebrated music critic Ann Powers seeks to understand the paradox of Mitchell - at once both elusive and inviting - through her myriad journeys. Drawing on extensive inter-views with Mitchell's peers and deep archival research, Powers takes readers to rural Canada, charts the course of Mitchell's musical evolution, follows the winding road of Mitchell's collaborations with other greats and explores the loves that fed her songwriting.
Kaleidoscopic in scope and intimate in detail, Travelling is a fresh and fascinating addition to the Joni Mitchell corpus - and one that questions whether an artist can ever truly be known to their fans.

The Daffodil Days
'Deeply researched and utterly convincing' Melissa Harrison, Guardian'Not a word is out of place. Full of understated lyricism ... an exquisite and spellbinding debut' Heather Clark, author of Red Comet 'Luminous ... Helen Bain's prose is exact and alive, and the novel builds with a quietly devastating inexorable force you can't look away from' Paula McLain, author of The Paris WifeIn the early 1960s, in a small town near Dartmoor, the church bells ring. The people of North Tawton go about their days, catching glimpses of one another’s lives. There’s the local GP, who knows more about his patients than he would sometimes prefer. There’s the young shop assistant at Kestrels, who understands that the ladies who come there for a new outfit sometimes hope to find a new self. There’s the tenant farm labourer who rings the tower bells at the church three times a week, the notes – harmonious and clashing – rippling out across the rooftops of the town. Amid all these lives, a young couple move into focus. New to the town with their small daughter, they have escaped London for a quieter existence in the thatched house beside the church, Court Green. The life they intend to build here – out of fresh lino tiles, second-hand furniture painted with hearts and flowers, and expertly-cooked suppers for weekend guests – will be a good and happy one. The Daffodil Days depicts a pivotal year in the marriage of 20th-century literature’s most infamous couple, witnessed by the people they lived among. It is a kaleidoscopic portrait of this enigmatic pair, refracted through the rich inner lives of a rural community caught – if only for a moment – in their light.

A Concise History of Ireland
Situated on one of Europe's busiest sea-roads, Ireland has always been connected to other cultures. This accessible and engaging history explores these connections across 1,600 years, from the arrival of Christianity in the fifth century to the present day. While the Norman invasion in 1169 brought the English crown into Irish politics, the impulse to preserve the Irish language and early Irish history united many of the Gaelic-Irish and Anglo-Normans from the fourteenth century. The Irish nationhood that emerged later was based more on Catholicism, as Ireland became a minor theatre of bitter European conflicts of the early modern period. Political (and religious) loyalties which solidified at this point determined Irish politics for the next three centuries, through the Troubles and beyond. Alongside these major political events, Caitriona Clear examines the living and working conditions of ordinary men and women — what they traded and farmed, how they lived and loved, and how they were often affected, but not always overwhelmed, by the politics of their time.
