'A complex, beautiful coming-of-age novel...a love story unlike any I've ever read' Ali Hazelwood'A soulful book about the politics of labor and submission' Raven LeilaniWhen Lili Marwan, a brilliant economics graduate student, has an intense one-night stand with Aleksandr Petrov, a Wall Street banker two decades her senior, her restless mind finally goes calm. At twenty-two, Lili is opinionated beyond her years: whether it's astrology, democratic socialism, veganism, or the ravages of late-stage capitalism. But when a tall, dark stranger buys her a drink in a FiDi bar, she meets her match. Aleksandr is fiercely intelligent, and infuriatingly disarming. He's also two decades older than her, a Capricorn, a neoliberal capitalist, and a strong believer in free markets, having escaped the Soviet Union in its dying days. He challenges her at every turn. And she can't stay away. Over the course of a heady New York City summer, Lili and Aleksandr reach across the divide of their differences, discovering startlingly shared experiences. Their casual arrangement-rough sex, hours where Lili does not need to think-gives way fast to an unexpected intimacy, by turns breathtaking, then devastating. As Lili struggles to understand herself and the complicated threads of her ambition, pain, and desire, she will have to decide: is the risk of loss worth the chance of something mor? EADERS ARE OBSESSED WITH GAMES'I was not prepared. This was addicting: tastefully sexy, raw and emotional' ?'Easily one of my favourite books not just of the year, but of my life. it's not the kind of story you just read and move on from, it sticks with you in a way that almost feels dangerous' ?'Heart-wrenching, achingly beautiful, and insanely sharp' ?'Lili and Aleksandr's story is my favourite love story of the year point blank' ?'A hit for me. I believe I've read it at the exact right time in my life, and I feel like it found something in me that I didn't know existed' ?'Equal parts a thoughtful and deeply detailed dive into the economics of the world, a literary classic worthy love story, and a deeply respectful and heartwrenching exploration of trauma, growth, and how falling in love can break down personal barriers' ?

The Thickets

This novel is the first part of the Ukrainian Trilogy of Polish poet and novelist Józef Łobodowski. Written between 1955 and 1960, the action of the trilogy plays out, for the most part, in the Kuban areas of Russia. Here Ukrainian, Russian, and Cossack live alongside and interact with Tatar and Circassian; there was also a large influx of other nationalities subject to the Tsar, such as Armenians and Poles — to which latter nation belongs Staś (Stanisław), the main character of the trilogy. The Thickets presents the reader with a vivid picture of the chaos that reigned in the former Russian Empire following the toppling and execution of the Tsar, and the fall of Kerensky’s government. Young Staś, who had studied at the local classical gymnasium, is now reduced to peddling contraband on the black market, discovers to the reader’s eyes the chaos of war and occupation in an especially visceral way.

Witch Season

There are two types of witches: those who are born into magic, and those who explode with it. 'A compelling, addictive story . . . Brilliant!' BRIGITTE KNIGHTLEY'An absolutely stellar debut . . . fans of witchy books are going to love this' INDIA HOLTON'Tightly woven and full of intrigue' LOGAN KARLIE_____________________Katherine Barnes is an enforcer, charged with maintaining order in Los Angeles' Aestas coven and bringing unsettled witches - those who aren't aware they have magic until it explodes out of them in catastrophic bursts - into the fold. As a former unsettled witch, Katherine owes her life to Aestas' founder, Sylvia Page. When Silas Khatri, heir to Noctis, the most powerful coven in the country, arrives to challenge Aestas's more unconventional practices, Katherine's dislike for him reaches blistering levels. She loathes his money and his coven's dangerous attitude towards unsettled witches. The fact that she finds him frustratingly attractive doesn't help either. But a powerful threat is on the rise, more insidious than the decades-long power struggle that exists in the hidden witch world. One that will pull Katherine and Silas together despite their differences. And one that could lead to an all-out war . . . Exhilarating, dangerous, and seductive, Witch Season is an action-packed and fiercely romantic urban fantasy from debut author and screenwriter Julia Bianco, perfect for fans of Juno Dawson, Leigh Bardugo and Buffy. _____________________READERS ARE SPELLBOUND BY WITCH SEASON!'Let me introduce you to THE urban fantasy of 2026... it's just magnificent!' ? ? ? ? ? Texan Crucible

A history of European immigrants in Texas and how they redefined racial identity. While the creation of a Black-White racial binary was foundational to most of the United States, nineteenth-century Texas developed a unique tripartite system that acknowledged the role of individuals of Mexican ancestry in a region that was Spanish, Mexican, and an independent nation before becoming a US (and briefly Confederate) state. Yet this framework was fraught, struggling to accommodate new arrivals from beyond North America, in particular the Irish, Germans, and Czechs. Texan Crucible tells the story of these immigrants and how they became Anglo. Marian Barber reveals the ways language, religion, alcohol use, and attitudes toward slavery distinguished these newcomers to Texas from those arriving from the eastern United States and how they nevertheless created thriving, influential communities. Their status was shaped by events inside and far beyond Texas, including an 1887 prohibition fight, the Civil War, and two world wars that encouraged them to erase their distinctiveness. As segregation was formally outlawed and civil rights activism grew, understandings of race shifted, cementing these groups’ status as Anglo. Texan Crucible recovers the histories of German, Irish, and Czech immigrants and unveils the social construction of racial difference underpinning Texan identity.

Midsummer Nights

Life imitates art when a down-on-her-luck TV star returns to her hometown stage and redefines her dreams in a funny and heartwarming spin on Shakespeare’s most magical romantic comedy. Miranda Belmont is a regular on a popular TV series, but her acting career is not exactly moving forward. After she’s publicly humbled, her next steps are definitely backward: playing Helena in a community theater production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in her stifling hometown, directed by her parents, and sharing the stage with her high school boyfriend. Backstage, it’s borderline Shakespearean drama. Between her ex, an intriguing costar making sweet overtures, and an unwelcome blast from the past, Miranda is caught in a real-life, nearly magical tangle of romantic confusion that threatens the production at every turn. Opening night will bring them all down to earth—especially Miranda, who’s navigating her way, onstage and off, through all the chaos these mere mortals create. As she reconnects to her roots, the creative spark she’s been missing awakens Miranda to who she truly is.

Reporting the Nuremberg Trials

For the first time, journalists who shared details about Nazi crimes from the International Military Tribunal, better known as the Nuremberg Trial, have their own story told. As World War II in Europe drew to a close in 1945, the Allies prepared to hold Nazi leaders accountable for crimes against humanity and selected Nuremberg as the site for the trial. The U.S. military took the lead in refurbishing a courtroom and making accommodations for 325 journalists and 23 defendants plus Allied judges, prosecutors, translators and administrative staff. Because publicity was a main consideration, the latest innovations and technology were incorporated into the courtroom to enhance news coverage of the trial. Press passes were in demand worldwide for courtroom seats. A press pool was selected to witness the executions in which 10 criminals were hung on Oct. 16, 1946. Famous war correspondents and young journalists who later became household names were headquartered in a castle, explored bombed ruins and faced dangers as a lingering spirit of Nazism seethed within the city. The lengthy trial became an excruciating endurance test for journalists by the time it ended (far longer than expected) on Oct. 1, 1946, setting a precedent for coverage of subsequent justice at Nuremberg. The author, a long-time journalist and former foreign correspondent, provides an insider’s look at how the news was gathered and conveyed. The book is based on extensive research and insights gathered from Nuremberg, including at the location where the journalists were housed and at the courtroom itself.

Scottish Warlocks, Wizards and Magicians

The story of Scotland's male witches and wizards always promised to be a convulted one, and the tale indeed turns out to be a strange tree with many twisted branches. The nation has several venerable magical figures who compete in stature with the legendary Merlin. Michael Scot, Thomas of Erceldoune and Coinneach Odhar were, respectively scholar, poet and seer, but they still command enormous presence in the national imagination. The forgotten men who got caught up in the national witch hunts were as unfortunate as the far greater number if women persecuted. Among those prosecuted were healers like Andro Man, who practiced his skills for decades before being examined. For every sincere practitioner or innocent, there were many more frauds and distorted characters caught up in the supernatural net. Major Weir left a dark stain on Edinburgh for a century after his death and Gregor Willox Macgregor is still remembered in the north with a mixture of doubtful contempt and fear.

Menachem Kipnis

Menachem Kipnis (1878–1942) was one of the early twentieth-century's greatest Jewish eastern European ethnomusicologists, folklorists, and photographers. He had a weekly column in the Warsaw Yiddish newspaper Haynt, retelling humorous old folk stories about the fictional Polish town of Chelm, populated exclusively by fools. At the same time, his photographs of Jewish life in eastern Europe regularly appeared in the Forverts (Forward), the most popular Yiddish daily newspaper in the United States. Now, for the first time, Kipnis's stories and photographs are published together in a single book. Menachem Kipnis brings these photographs and stories into dialogue with one another, bridging the Jewish communities in Poland and in America during the interwar period. This dialogue, between image and text, between European metropolis and American metropolis, captures a key historical moment when American Jews sought to imagine the lives of their coreligionists in the "Old Country" and eastern European urban Jews sought to distinguish themselves from their Jewish compatriots who were still living in the shtetl. Including an introductory essay, annotations, and an epilogue by Sheila E. Jelen, Menachem Kipnis suggests new ways of understanding both visual and literary depictions of eastern European Jewish culture between the two world wars.
