Bad Kid
‘When I was thirteen I was sent away... Maybe dragged away is a better way to put it.’ A powerful and unflinching graphic memoir about what really happens inside America’s secretive ‘troubled teen’ correctional facilities – told from the inside with raw honesty and dark humour. Bad Kid tells the story of Sofia’s turbulent teenhood, including her experience of being taken away (‘kidnapped’) to a residential treatment centre aimed at ‘troubled teens’. Wise, funny and heartbreaking all at once, it presents – in a series of flashbacks – the unforgettable portrait of life in a US 'teenage boot camp' and offers YA readers a glimpse into the harmful effects that labels can have on us. Powerfully told in black and white comic strips accented with vivid pops of red, Bad Kid is the coming-of-age story of Sofia’s late childhood, and how her once-happy relationship with her mother sours irreparably when she marries Sofia’s stepfather. It follows her early teenage rebellion years in which she meets Marigold – ‘AKA the coolest girl I’d ever met’ – and together they set about finding themselves through the traditional teen pursuits of rule breaking, smoking, dodgy hook ups and bright red booty shorts . . . until the day when she is bundled into a car by total strangers and driven 400 miles to a teenage correction camp based deep in the woodlands of Virginia, US . . . This powerful and challenging memoir covers themes and ideas that are universal to teenagers everywhere – being misunderstood, mis-labelled and rejected, and speaks to relationship and mental health issues experienced by teens today. A striking coming-of-age story for YA and adult readers alike, Bad Kid reminds us that no one is beyond redemption – and that reclaiming your story can be the most powerful act of all.

The Renovation
*One of the Guardians top 10 debuts to watch out for in 2026*A dazzlingly original new voice in literary fiction for fans of Ali Smith, Mohsin Hamid and Elif ShafakThe Renovation is a heart-breaking portrait of one family caught in the tides of history, grappling with grief, exile, politics and the painful absurdity of loveDilara’s father is disappearing. He has dementia and the disease steals a little more of him each day. Dilara has persuaded him to move in with her, hiring builders to adapt her apartment in preparation, but when the renovation is complete she discovers a big problem. Instead of a new bathroom, the builders have installed a Turkish prison cell. At first she is outraged. There has surely been some mistake. Dilara’s family are exiles – they left Turkey many years ago and have never been back. The last thing she wants is a piece of her estranged homeland appearing uninvited in her new home. But as the weeks pass, her indignation gives way to curiosity. Beyond the cell door, she glimpses Turkish guards going about their work. Through the cell walls, she hears Turkish prisoners murmuring, rustling, crying out in their sleep. And in the strange, impossible air of the cell itself, she smells the sesame scent of freshly baked simit, she tastes the fine dust of the Anatolian steppe on her tongue. Even as she struggles to care for her father, to keep the family finances afloat and stop the wheels coming off her marriage, Dilara is drawn back again and again to the mysterious prison cell, and through it to a city that once belonged to her – to the salt wind off the Marmara, the sky full of gulls and domes and minarets – back to Istanbul.

Comparative Musicology
This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. Why do all human societies make music, but in such different ways? Scientific attempts to answer this question through cross-cultural comparison stalled during the 20th century and have only recently begun to make a resurgence. In this book, Patrick Savage, a leader in this resurgence synthesises recent advances from musicology and related fields including psychology, linguistics, computer science, and evolutionary anthropology to outline ways to understand and compare all the world's music. He applies comparative musicology to longstanding debates including universal and culturally-specific aspects of human music; evolutionary relationships between song, speech, and animal vocalisation; and applications to areas including music copyright, 2nd language acquisition, social bonding, and cultural heritage revitalisation. In doing so, he argues for an inclusive, multidisciplinary field that uplifts traditionally marginalised voices and combines the qualitative methods traditionally employed by musicologists and cultural anthropologists with quantitative methods from the natural sciences. The book is accessibly written using over 50 figures/tables and an interactive tutorial with audio examples, with each chapter designed to be readable/teachable on its own. It is designed to be appreciated by anyone from undergraduate students to senior professors, without requiring any specialised background knowledge.
