The New Eden
JC Niala grew up in the city of Nairobi - the only city with a national park in its borders. There she first encountered what life is like when a city is deeply intertwined with nature - and what happens when that relationship is in jeopardy. Through her experience of living in cities across the world, from London to San Francisco, anthropologist JC Niala is perfectly placed to offer a deep exploration into life in our cities. From the origins our parks, to modern acts of guerilla gardening, JC uses case studies from across the globe to challenge the perception of our place in the city, and our means of connection to the natural world. Each encounter attests to the growing realisation that nature is abundant in our cities - and it is time to discover a new way of living.Combining memoir, social history, and cultural commentary, JC Niala celebrates city life and asks what we are missing by overlooking nature in the everyday - and, by doing so, offers a powerful vision of the future where we can all co-exist.
The Library of Traumatic Memory
The first literary science fiction novel from Neil Jordan, visionary director of The Company of Wolves and Interview with the VampireIn a windswept corner of a forgotten peninsula, love and loss echo through the halls of a mansion built on secrets. Here memory is currency of the future, and the past refuses to stay buried. In the year 2084, Christian Cartwright, a quiet librarian at the enigmatic Huxley Institute, spends his days archiving the world’s most painful memories in the Library of Traumatic Memory. But when his lover Isolde dies in a mysterious car crash, Christian secretly resurrects her as a digital consciousness — an act of grief, obsession, and defiance. As Christian navigates a world where memories can be edited, dreams harvested, and the dead made to speak, he uncovers a deeper conspiracy buried in the Institute’s foundations — one that stretches back centuries to his 18th-century ancestor Montagu Cartwright, the architect of the Huxley Mansion. Montagu’s obsidian mirror and copper model may hold the key to a reality where architecture shapes fate and time loops back on itself. Blending gothic mystery, speculative science, and philosophical depth, The Library of Traumatic Memory is a haunting meditation on love, loss, and the ethics of memory. As the past and future collide, Christian must decide what it means to remember — and what it costs to forget.

But one wrong move could spur the war I’ve worked so hard to avoid. I’ll wear the dress and the cupla and the shoes. I’ll do it all with a smile on my face. Because everyone's watching. He’s watching – hunting a fissure in my frosty shield, trying to scrape back the layers and see my ugly insides. He’s unyielding. Unguarded. Changed. Abundance
The threat to liberal democracy isn't just autocrats - it's a lack of effective action by so-called progressives.
We have the means to build an equitable world without hunger, fuelled by clean energy. Instead, we have a politics driven by scarcity, lives defined by unaffordability and public institutions that no longer deliver on big ideas. It's time for change.
Bestselling authors Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson have spent decades analysing the political, economic and cultural forces that have led us here. In this once-in-a-generation intervention, they unpick the barriers to progress and show how we can, and must, shift the political agenda to one that not only protects and preserves, but also builds. From healthcare to housing, infrastructure to innovation, they lay out a path to a future defined not by fear, but by abundance.
The Dangerous Stranger
'This is absolutely first class' Stephen Fry'Simon Mason has created crime fiction's most entertaining double act in decades' Mick Herron'Move over Morse' Val McDermid'My favourite UK series' M W CravenOn a warm and pleasant evening in Oxford, gentle city of poets and scholars, rioters outside a hotel full of asylum seekers set a young refugee on fire. The city - the country - convulses in shock. Is this who we are? It's international news of the very worst kind, and the Chief Constable demands immediate and exemplary action in bringing the perpetrators to justice. The detectives leading the investigation fill him with misgivings, however: DIs Ryan and Ray Wilkins (no relation), Thames Valley's detective pantomime horse, one Oxford-educated, the other Oxford-trailer park. He doesn't understand why they work together. 'Do they even get on?' 'Somehow that doesn't seem necessary,' their Superintendent replies. Who burned the boy alive? Was it a far-right extremist? Was it an ordinary person who had simply gone along to watch and got caught up in the emotion? Could it even be one of the children who were there? Deploying a range of investigative skills, some standard, some unconventional and some frankly nuts, the Wilkinses do what they do: results with chaos. But when they discover that the victim was not an asylum seeker after all, or even a resident of the hotel, the whole investigation kicks into a completely different configuration. READERS ARE LOVING RYAN AND RAY:'Loved it, what a wonderful read' ?'Really, really enjoyed and was sorry to finish it' ?'Have really enjoyed the whole series' ?'If you like Slow Horses, either the books or the Apple series, this book is for you' ?'Set in present day Oxford, England, it is Morse times two' ?'Can't put these books down' ?'A real un-putdownable page turner . . . Stronger
'Even if you've never picked up a weight, Stronger is for you' - Arnold SchwarzeneggerNo matter how you think of yourself - strong or weak, large or small - you are substantially made of muscle. To the last day of your life, your ability to stand and go where you want to go, your agency and effectiveness in the world, will depend on it. But what is muscl? rom the battlefields of Homer's Iliad where muscles first enter world literature, to the Victorian-era gymnasiums where women build strength and muscle by lifting heavy weights, to the retirement home in Boston where a young doctor discovers that training at high intensity can produce the same relative gains for frail ninety-year-olds as for thirty-year-olds, Stronger places the science and significance of our muscles in an astonishing new light. Plato's Crito
Many people read the Crito primarily as a companion piece to the Apology and as one of Plato's statements on the nature of politics and the citizen's relationship to the state. This book challenges both of those assumptions and shows, by close analysis of the characters, the argument and the dramatic features of the dialogue, that it is best read as an exploration of the nature and significance of Socratic moral reasoning. It shows that there is a single argument throughout the dialogue and that the 'Laws of Athens' are best understood as supporting Socrates' attempt to convince Crito that a commitment to the currently best rational argument justifies his submission to the death penalty, despite the injustice of his sentence. The importance of the Crito for later political and legal theory is great, but the reception of the dialogue should not blind us to its original intention and significance.

How to Read Minds
'A beautifully observed exploration of what it really means to understand another person' EMMA REED TURRELL 'Sharp, funny and brilliant – a book that needed to be written' DR CAMILLA PANG ________________________________ What is true empathy? The classic stereotype of autistic people is that they can’t empathise, that they’re highly intellectual but find it difficult to connect. As an autistic psychotherapist who empathises for a living, Aimee Cliff knew that this wasn’t right. Empathy is something you do, not something you are – meaning it’s something we can all get better at, if we choose to practise. Drawing on the latest scientific research, her clinical experience and interviews with a wide range of neurodivergent people, Cliff examines how empathy works in the brain and body, and lays out five pillars that allow anyone to practise empathy. She finds that empathy is humble, empathy is embodied, empathy is amoral, empathy is radical, and empathy is work. How to Read Minds offers a new idea of empathy with a more radical and expansive definition. For real empathy fights against constrictive stereotypes and dares to imagine something new. It has the potential to connect and liberate humans across our differences. This wise, humane and quietly life-changing book considers how to understand each other, how to care for and love each other, in a timeless examination of questions that affect us all. ‘Clear-eyed, forensic and humane’ Sophie Walker, author of Five Rules for Rebellion
