Analogue Africa : Notes on the Anti-Colonial Imagination
Too many of our convictions about the fifty-four nations of Africa come from non-African sources. Western media often treat the continent as a simulacrum of Western anxieties. In contrast, Jeremy Harding focuses on specific historical episodes and cultural practices - cinema, art, ethnography and journalism - to steer us away from treacherous generalisations.
Analogue Africa celebrates the ingenuity with which African artists - and a handful of Europeans - have reimagined the colonial encounter and voiced their impatience with white minority rule. Among his illustrious cast of filmmakers, photographers, writers and painters are Seydou Keita, Sanlé Sory, Ernest Cole, Sarah Maldoror, John Akomfrah, William Kentridge and Binyavanga Wainaina. Harding argues that Western museums with priceless African holdings - the British Museum, the Musée du Quai Branly, the Royal Museum of Central Africa in Belgium - are now the sites of a struggle over the colonial past, adding the latest chapter to an unfinished history.
A Vindication of the Rights of Woman
A powerful argument for gender equality from the world's first feminist, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman is one of the most important works of the modern era. In this book, Mary Wollstonecraft demonstrated that it was necessary for women to be educated in the same manner as men for the benefit of all society. She emphasised the capability of women for rational thought and their ability to pursue any field they might choose. Rather than relying on beauty, women should obtain control over their own lives through education and honesty.
This elegant pocket-sized gift edition has real collector's appeal, featuring the classic, unabridged text, a facsimile of Wollstonecraft's signature on the title page, silver gilded page edges and beautifully designed endpapers. Part of the Arcturus Ornate Classics series this book makes wonderful gift for any lover of classic literature.
ABOUT THE SERIES: Arcturus Ornate Classics are beautifully bound editions of iconic literary works across history. These compact, foil-embossed hardbacks are printed using deluxe ivory paper and make the perfect gift.
Resettlers and Survivors
Located on the border of present-day Romania and Ukraine, the historical region of Bukovina was the site of widespread displacement and violence as it passed from Romanian to Soviet hands and back again during World War II. This study focuses on two groups of “Bukovinians”—ethnic Germans and German-speaking Jews—as they navigated dramatically changed political and social circumstances in and after 1945. Through comparisons of the narratives and self-conceptions of these groups, Resettlers and Survivors gives a nuanced account of how they dealt with the difficult legacies of World War II, while exploring Bukovina’s significance for them as both a geographical location and a “place of memory.”
Enver Hoxha
Featured in New Statesman’s Culture Preview 2026: The best non-fiction to read this yearEnver Hoxha, one of the most fanatical communist leaders of the twentieth century, ruled Albania for forty years. He was a Stalinist modernizer who sought to pull his country out of its peripheral status through rapid industrialization and diplomatic cunning. Albania transitioned from one ideological alliance to another, breaking first with Tito’s Yugoslavia, then Khrushchev’s USSR and lastly post-Maoist China. Masterfully exploiting rivalries within the communist bloc, Hoxha was able to ensure his regime’s survival and play an outsized role in the ideological clashes that riddled the communist world during the second half of the twentieth century. Meanwhile, at home he built a cult of personality and maintained his grip over power by ruthless coercion. Enver Hoxha: Twentieth-Century Tyrant paints a nuanced picture of Hoxha’s psychological, ideological and political worlds, illuminating a lesser-known story of the Cold War, and enriching our understanding of the nature of authoritarianism and dictatorship.
Kissing the Sky
From the bestselling author of Whistlin’ Dixie in a Nor’easter comes a soulful, nostalgic novel about a young woman coming of age in the ‘60s to the blare of the music that shaped a generation. It’s the summer of ’69. While her peers revel in free love and rock and roll, Suzannah is home from college, sequestered inside her conservative Southern home. Her domineering father has condemned rock music and driven away her best friend. She’s counting the days until fall. But everything changes when her free-spirited best friend, Livy, resurfaces, urging Suzannah, a talented singer, to join her for three days of peace and music in upstate New York. Fed up with her father’s rules and fearful for her brother’s fate in Vietnam, Suzannah agrees to the road trip, sneaking off without her parents’ knowledge. Miles outside her comfort zone, the electrifying bedlam of Woodstock jolts her into a journey of self-transformation. But it’s not all incense and peppermints. Suzannah’s falling hard for Leon, a boy she meets at the festival, and the seductive bud of first love conceals a thorn of heartache. Lies uncover betrayal, and Livy’s wild behavior leads to a startling revelation. A nostalgic trip through the turbulent ’60s, this is the story of a lovable heroine who lets go of the girl she was to embrace the woman she’s becoming while she learns to lift her voice—for herself and perhaps for the world.
Devour Everything
Devour Everything is a love letter to heroic failure, to creation in the face of destruction, to the mundane made sacred. Ranging from New York to small-town Aberdeenshire, from pop culture to Norse Valkyries, and wrestling with issues of motherhood, memory and loss, Sarah Stewart's deftly illuminating debut collection reminds us that as humans "we are animals / and our bodies remember things." Sumptuous, lyrical, and downright gorgeous throughout, 'Devour Everything' lives up to its title with gusto in its almost militant devotion to beauty. - Jane McKie 'Devour Everything' slides between worlds, crossing and recrossing the slippery borders between reality and illusion, past and present, memory and loss. Sharply observed, playful but deeply serious, these are poems that unsettle all our certainties. - Helen Tookey Sarah Stewart's close attention to the 'thrum of normality' often reveals the fragility within it, giving us poems poised at an edge, tingling with threat. The result is a finely tuned recital of human interactions, where we come to understand that life's encounters can be small but devastating. - Rebecca Goss

The book traces his journeys from Oxford to Berlin, China and America, bringing to life his turbulent era and the inner conflicts of his long relationship with Chester Kallman. This insightful and compelling account by acclaimed historian Peter Ackroyd captures Auden’s genius as both a historical witness and an enduring poetic voice.

Stupid Idiots
This witty yet thoughtful book examines stupidity and idiocy, and their most dangerous incarnation: stupid idiocy – the unthinking embrace of flawed thinking. While philosophers chase wisdom, this book takes a humbler route, asking instead how we might think just a little less badly. Drawing sharp distinctions between not thinking and thinking poorly, and doubling down on bad thought, it reveals how deeply these failings are tied to our mental habits. With clarity and humour, it considers how stupidity shapes everyday life and public discourse. Within its pages is a chapter on politics and a pointed critique of Donald Trump, ‘stupid idiot supreme’. This is an accessible philosophical guide for anyone who wants to better understand – and perhaps reduce – their own foolishness.

Plato
Plato is a key figure from the beginnings of Western philosophy, yet the impact of his lived experience on his thought has rarely been explored. Plato lived in turbulent times, born during a war that led to Athens’s defeat and decline. A restored democracy enabled the execution of his teacher Socrates. Carol Atack explores how his life in Athens influenced Plato’s thinking, how he developed the Socratic dialogue into a powerful philosophical tool and how he used the institutions of Athenian society to create a compelling imaginative world. Now available in paperback, this accessibly written book shows how Plato made Athens the place where diverse ideas were integrated into a new way of approaching big questions about existence and the societies we create, then and now.

Knockan
In remote Assynt, where the past is recreated from rock and bone, a crofter and her estranged daughter search for some common ground in their annual week together. Rooted in the landscape and geology of North-West Scotland, this beautifully written and heart-breaking novel-in-verse is an original and powerful exploration of how our lived experience weighs on us, intimately told through the fracturing and repair of a mother and daughter relationship. Powerful, spare and heart-breaking, Jim Carruth's new narrative poem centres on geology and fossils as he explores the deep emotional life of two women confronting their past amidst the savage beauty of Assynt. Layered and astute, it shows the crofter's elemental struggle to survive alongside their livestock and how the scars of the past will keep breaking open until its effect on the present is acknowledged. Flora and fauna shine out of the snowy expanse of the page as Carruth mines that white space to express the silences around his acute observations. - Martina Evans The words worked like the scant intimate points we connect with in an otherwise overwhelming landscape. It left me with a quiet, moving confirmation that love - like the land - is shaped and misshaped not by ideals but by pressure and accumulation. - Cynan Jones Jim Carruth's poems sing off the page in a ballad taken up by two voices, crackling with a tension that is echoed in the land, 'ice-gripped./ Gripped but not static'. As the earth shows its scars and as conversations turn jagged, the music changes with them. Each crystal note in 'Knockan' is precise and local but reverberates across geographies and into the far reaches of the human heart. - Imtiaz Dharker
Bummerland
With radical candor and sardonic wit, Randolph Lewis offers an autopsy of the recent past, looking for glimmers of hope and redemption among the detritus strewn about by neo–Gilded Age billionaires, Big Tech, and political extremes during the first Trump administration and the pandemic era. American life took a weird turn in June 2015, when an aging reality star descended a golden escalator to announce his bid for the White House. From there, Lewis watched from his longtime home in the Lone Star State as the country slipped into an endless fever dream churning with chaos, uncertainty, and fear. Wanting to decipher how things went sideways in such a hurry, Lewis drove all over the Sunbelt and beyond, trying to make sense of what was happening. He sojourns to an apocalyptic slab of the Mojave Desert; the rugged mountains under assault near Colorado Springs; the epic sprawl of Las Vegas, Austin, and Houston; the expat communities of central Mexico; the hotbeds of racism in the Deep South; and the fjords of Norway, from which, surreally, Lewis watched the unfolding news of the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, and decided to go there. In a register mournful, meditative, and darkly comic, Lewis offers a portrait of modern American life under a system whose democratic norms have been stretched to the limit. Lewis, an American studies professor for three decades, examines the trajectories of cultural burnout that have ushered us into a new Gilded Age of fear, hustle, and hype. In this passionate critique of the anxious new world we inhabit, Lewis offers sketches of where we've ended up, why it feels so wrong, and how we might find our way out of Bummerland.
