Pekní vtáci
Tretia kniha aforizmov Emila Babína je iná ako dve predchádzajúce. Teraz sa v nej stretli básnik a aforista Babín a filmový režisér Martin Šulík ako výtvarník. Ide o stretnutie nanajvýš šťastné: Babínove aforizmy Šulík skvelo ilustruje a nápadito interpretuje humornou optikou.
Dizajn a zalomenie knihy Martin Kurhajec.

Passport Photo Service
'For decades Philip Sharkey modestly ruled the London roost of passport and visa photography: the greatest, most trusted and admired practitioner in the field. Those lucky enough to have come before Philip’s lens always left feeling that we had participated in a ritual that elevated us to a special kind of club. This wonderfully produced memoir vividly brings back to life a vanished time in the capital. Delicious.’ – Stephen Fry
A never-before-seen archive of 300 celebrity portraits from London’s iconic Passport Photo Service, where actors, writers, musicians, athletes, and other famous faces posed for their travel document photographs
Since opening its doors in 1953, Passport Photo Service, an unassuming studio on Oxford Street in London, photographed thousands of people for passports, visas, and green cards – and some of them just happened to be famous. It was a family affair run by professional boxer turned photographer Dave Sharkey, his wife, Ann, and, eventually, their son Philip. Conveniently located near the US embassy and directly opposite the department store Selfridges, Passport Photo Service became the go-to place for passport photos thanks to word-of-mouth and its 'Ready in 10 Minutes' slogan, offering instant service before anyone else in the city was able to provide such a quick turnaround. This charming book is a collection of more than 300 never-before-published portraits taken over the course of six decades, including actors, writers, musicians, politicians, athletes, and more.
Organized loosely alphabetically, Passport Photo Service includes such famous faces as Muhammad Ali, Shirley Bassey, Eric Clapton, John Cleese, Joan Collins, Sean Connery, Anton Corbijn, Tim Curry, Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Dockery, Stefan Edberg, Mia Farrow, Tom Ford, Stephen Fry, Ava Gardner, J. Paul Getty, Althea Gibson, Chrissie Hynde, Mick Jagger, Angelina Jolie, Chaka Khan, Little Richard, Madonna, Rami Malek, Stella McCartney, George Michael, Carey Mulligan, Bill Murray, Peter O’Toole, Alan Rickman, Paul Robeson, Ringo Starr, Tilda Swinton, Shania Twain, Valentino, Gene Wilder, Kate Winslet, and Natalie Wood, among many others.
More than one hundred of the portraits are accompanied by anecdotes and amusing stories, written by Philip Sharkey. Among his memories: The first celebrity to use their services, Errol Flynn, pushed open the door and, hands on hips, boomed, 'Yep, it’s me.' Muhammad Ali’s picture was taken on his way to the DRC (formerly Zaire) to fight George Foreman in the famous Rumble in the Jungle match. Sharkey’s uncle Peter suggested that perhaps Bianca Jagger remove her large hat for her photo, as the government might not accept the picture. She responded, 'They will for me.' She didn’t come back for a retake. In his introduction, which tells a brief history of his family’s business, Sharkey declares, 'One thing is for sure, whoever we photographed, famous or not – we treated them all with the same care and respect. In that moment, when the flash goes off, your passport photo becomes a great leveler.'
Perfect for the photo historian, London nostalgic, or celebrity buff, Passport Photo Service’s design is an homage to the art of the passport, as well as the studio’s photo wallets that held developed prints, complete with a leatherette cover and a smart red stamp. Filled with a wonderfully eclectic assortment of subjects, this book is a breath of fresh air in the age of tightly controlled imagery. This volume charismatically yet emphatically celebrates the importance of vernacular photography and the story of a family-run business, revealing how images even made for travel documents can still be powerful portraits.

America’s Favorite Warlord
Meet America’s favorite “warlord,” Abdul Raziq Achakzai (1976-2018). This book depicts the U.S. war in Afghanistan from a new perspective: that of the most dynamic and fearsome of America’s late allies. His critics castigated him as another of the corrupt strongmen who have dominated Central Asia for the past four decades. But a closer look at Raziq’s environment will allow readers from the West to understand how military leaders came to participate in Afghan governance after 2001, much as Americans have turned to charismatic authoritarians to establish justice in the face of uncertainty at home in the past. Why did foreigners continue to work with Raziq, given his grievous reputation? The short answer is that he was competent from a military perspective. But speaking of General Raziq with his former comrades revealed that competence in counterinsurgency took on many distinct connotations. Over the course of his career, Raziq not only captured and killed Taliban fighters. He provided intelligence, recruited and organized manpower, rallied lagging forces, and allowed outsiders a way into the complex tribal politics of Kandahar Province. Above all, his charisma and enthusiasm inspired hope in his military partners, along with wide swaths of the population of Kandahar. Almost everyone who met Raziq remarked on his force of personality, which took on cult status in his last years. Raziq rose to power as a hybrid figure, as he gained authority through his military skills and as part of a tribal hierarchy. This hybridity helps to explain why his leadership was flexible and inclusive rather than authoritarian in nature. Although he began his career as a narrow tribal militiaman, he ended it as a coalition-building nationalist. In our age of militarized borders, proxy wars, and insurgencies, Raziq’s career as a regional strongman offers an important case study for ongoing security dilemmas around the world.

The Curious Mind of Elon Musk
When someone is very different, we struggle to place them. We venerate them, we revile them, or we put them in a box labeled “flawed genius”—anything that spares us the effort of seeing the world as they do. No one embodies this more than Elon Musk, especially after his foray into politics. He lives in the spotlight, yet he remains an enigma. The Curious Mind of Elon Musk is an ideas-driven biography that seeks to understand Musk in his own terms. Drawing on influences from science, engineering, and literature, Charles Steel traces Musk’s core beliefs across nine themes from the meaning of life to artificial intelligence. What emerges as Musk’s defining quality is his obsessive curiosity—borne of existential anxiety, nurtured by an extreme rationality, and unleashed in the building of multiple companies over three decades. If you prefer to imagine Musk as a savior of humanity or as a fabulist with a penchant for the far right, then that is what you will see. But if you care to look deeper into what makes Musk different, the curiouser and curiouser he becomes.

Tombstones of Roman Britain
Discover the men, women, and children who called the Roman province of Britannia home through the most final ? and often only ? evidence they left behind: their tombstones. What can we learn from these lasting monuments to the dead? This book brings together a selection of surviving tombstones from Roman Britain for the first time in an easy-to-access collection, accompanied by useful contextual information on ancient burial practices, funerary symbolism, and afterlife beliefs. Explore the lives and deaths of people from every walk of life who came from all over the vast Roman Empire: from the devoted wives and playful children living along Hadrian's Wall, to the experienced soldiers stationed at forts across the province, and even the enslaved as they are commemorated for all eternity on these ancient inscribed stones. New clear translations of the inscriptions introduce these memorials to modern readers, and a handy guide at the end also equips readers with the tools for decoding common Latin funerary abbreviations for themselves. Each tombstone is accompanied by background information on the deceased, while accompanying illustrations and photographs of the tombstones bring these ancients back to life.
