Between Freedom and Hierarchy
In his later life, Max Weber's work focused on ideas about rule and hierarchy encapsulated in the German word Herrschaft. These ideas are unique in the canon of Western political theory in that they derive almost exclusively from social categories (agency, power, hierarchy), rather than more conventional political ones (constitutions, democracy). This produces a picture of 'political' life which is self-evident to us today, yet it is theoretically novel. Weber was passionately committed to the idea of human agency: that all people contained within them the potential for ordering their lives in ways they found meaningful. But he also accepted the presence of powerful external constraints on agency, created by the exercise of agency itself--the unequal outcomes of free competition--or impersonal forces, such as technology and bureaucracy. So free societies and polities revolve around two opposite poles: freedom and hierarchy. Weber developed these ideas in parallel with what he now began to call his 'sociology'. The foundations of his thought go back to 1904-5, but engagement with political theory made him reflect more carefully on what one could say about social life in general, and how much this differed from conditions specific to politics or any other life-sphere. He evolved an original, 'federal' model of sociology: a small general core set alongside much larger special sociologies on (for example) politics, religion, law, the economy. This is unique amongst the classical sociologists. In this way, the book covers the major novelties of Weber's final decade and presents the first comprehensive historical portrait of Weber's political ideas. Weber has an immense variety of modern readers and users, but the perspective of the historian with no other commitment than to what he himself thought, is the nearest that we can come to a detached or neutral view of him.

Cassel grew up in a family of curse workers - people who can rewrite your emotions, your memories, your luck-with nothing more than a touch. It's the kind of magic that got outlawed generations ago. Everyone who has it is considered a criminal.
But Cassel isn't like the rest of them. He hasn't got magic. That means he's always been an outsider - the only straight-laced kid in a crooked family. At least, that's what he believed, right up until three years ago, when he murdered the girl he loved, Lila, who was also heir to the Zacharov crime family.
Now he's started sleepwalking, waking on rooftops, chasing a white cat through his dreams. The more he digs, the more his past begins to unravel. As Cassel begins to suspect he's part of a huge con game, he realises the only way to find out the truth is to outcon the conmen.
Murder mystery meets contemporary fantasy in the cutthroat world of the Curse Workers, where a single touch can bring love - or death - and your dreams might be truer than your memories. Brimming with high-stakes deception, jaw-dropping twists, and a dash of romance, this beloved series is perfect for fans of Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo and Vicious by V. E. Schwab.
The Will to Live
An unforgettable memoir about love, loss, resilience, the power of community and most importantly, hope. This inspirational work is something that anyone concerned about the mental health of a friend, loved one, or family member should read and share. John Trautwein’s life seemed perfect. An ex-Boston Red Sox player turned corporate executive, he had a loving marriage with four beautiful children. This all changed in October 2010 when his 15-year-old son Will died by suicide. John thought his life had ended, too. What he eventually discovered instead was that even in the midst of unimaginable grief, there is a way forward—through faith, family, friendship, and the healing power of helping others. With raw honesty and unwavering compassion, John shares how his darkest days revealed a new calling: to spread awareness about mental health, to break the silence around depression, and to deliver hope to those who need it most. Drawing on his personal and professional experience, and as co-founder, with his wife Susie, of the nonprofit The Will to Live Foundation, John turns a tragedy into a positive and successful source of hope through his “Life Teammates” concept and programs. Through inspirational stories, he demonstrates our ability to improve our own will to live by delivering hope to one another. He reveals to us how to recognize the subtle and not-so-subtle signs of mental illness. His story emphasizes that love, not time, is what truly mends the heart. The Will to Live offers both inspiration and practical insight into how we can be there for each other in times of need. It is a story about courage. About community. About choosing to speak up, to reach out, to listen, and to remind each other that it’s always okay to not be okay.
Without Prejudice
Harvey Brownstone''s story is a tumultuous, sometimes hilarious, and uplifting journey from bullied child to outcast after coming out to his parents, to trailblazing lawyer, to distinguished judge. Brownstone colourfully details his momentous and inventive judicial career marked by his numerous innovations of the justice system, particularly revolutionizing Ontario''s child support enforcement programme. In retirement, he is no longer shackled by the restraints traditionally imposed on the judiciary, and thus Brownstone provides a frank, unfiltered, and refreshing glimpse into the inner workings of the justice system, boldly delineating the strengths and weaknesses of criminal and family courts, both of which he claims are sorely in need of comprehensive reform. His remarkable story, reinventing himself from high-profile judge to highly acclaimed talk show host, is a testament to the resilience and triumph of the human spirit.
