The Tattooed Hills
Across Britain, and especially in the southern chalklands, is a series of figures cut into the hills, exposing the chalk beneath. These hill-figures are strange, mysterious, and sometimes controversial. They are of varying and often contested age, and vague purpose. They are horses, giants, crosses, a lion, a lost panda, crowns, a kiwi, regimental badges. They are often sited near ancient trackways, iron age earthworks or dissolved monasteries, and or close to stone circles. Some are faded or lost, their names preserved only in the names of valleys or hills.Humans have long decorated their landscapes, but chalk hill figures are, almost uniquely, a feature of the English downland. This means they are sometimes seen as emblematic of Englishness, celebrated by poets, writers, artists and musicians. The book is a portrait of the places where these figures dominate, bringing in history, politics, literature, music, film and TV, but with a light touch. The Tattooed Hills isn’t a nostalgic elegy for England, instead it uses the figures as a lens through which to explore the land and delves into more troubling undercurrents – the way that chalk hill figures have sometimes been appropriated, in an attempt to pin down a narrow definition of Englishness and belonging.Chalk carvings are signals for our identity and identities, and that their long history, the way they have inspired artists, musicians and writers, and the communities that live in their shadows, offer an alternative way of thinking about ourselves. Often created as memorials for historical events, their meanings, like their shape, have shifted over the years, these new interpretations reflecting our changing society and values. They are beacons on the hills, they speak to us and of us, no matter where we live or where we’re from.

Preparing for War
An original conceptual approach to the study of war, attempting to capture the entire phenomenon of military adaptation—whether strategic, institutional or in the field. The unravelling of the post-Cold War order has intensified geopolitical tensions, driving a global increase in defence spending. Most military organisations are engaged in a process of drastic transformation, trying to scale their activities, learn from contemporary battlefields, and improve readiness. Yet armed forces engaged in such reforms must solve a major dilemma: how to adapt to an uncertain future without losing their current identity, coherence or operational effectiveness. In this incisive and timely study, Olivier Schmitt explores how modern militaries adapt, or fail to adapt, to evolving threats, technologies and political constraints. Drawing on global case-studies--from the trenches of Ukraine to the halls of the People's Liberation Army leadership--he investigates how social expectations, political constraints and organisational cultures collide in the worldwide quest to reform the military. Essential reading for defence professionals, policymakers and scholars of international security, Preparing for War equips readers with the tools to grasp not only the 'how' but the 'why' behind military transformation. In an era of rising defence budgets and shrinking certainties, this book delivers crucial insights into the future of war--and the institutions that must be ready for it.

Perplexed, the Guptas turn to Dr. Shoma Bose, a psychiatrist who has been investigating what are known as 'cases of the reincarnation type' for years. But her understanding of the world is changed forever by Varsha's revelations.
Half a century later, Varsha's therapeutic case file catches the attention of a group of environmental activists, and Shoma's nephew Dinu is drawn inexorably into their plans. And as Dinu finds himself caught up in the search for Varsha, buried memories of his own past begin to surface.

Forever Forward
Few names in motorsports carry the same authority as McLaren and, although in recent years their performance hadn't living up to the legend, they have now returned to form in a spectacular way under the leadership of Zak Brown.
Going into 2023, Brown's team were the ninth quickest on the grid only to end it as arguably the second fastest, after a dramatic mid-season turnaround. It was only in 2024 that lead driver Lando Norris achieved his first ever Grand Prix win in Miami. The following year he became world champion.
Zak Brown took over a failing team from Ron Dennis in 2018, and his dynamic leadership style has seen astounding results. McLaren are on the rise again, looking to a future that will echo its haloed past, when James Hunt, Alain Prost, Niki Lauda, Ayrton Senna and Lewis Hamilton drove the team into the history books. Here they go again.
The McLaren motto is 'Forever Forward', and their story is all about the underdog taking on the big boys of F1. The author looks back at McLaren's origin story, as their heritage is such a big part of their identity, but his main mission is going behind the scenes to give us the inside track on the team's extraordinary resurgence under Brown, and their thrilling bid for victory.
While You Were Seething

Then, even more horrifying: people appear to be mistaking her for the woman he dedicates all his books to. The love of his life, his adored beloved-the one who doesn't actually exist. Now they're trapped into pretending she does and that Daisy is her, each fake kiss and phony embrace ratcheting up the tension to the point where enemies suddenly seems a lot closer to lovers than either of them would like.
Or so they're telling themselves.
But sometimes it's hard to be sure, when seething turns into something so much more ...
On Thin Ice
They can't keep skating around their feelings...
When disgraced Hollywood star Luca Vasvault is partnered with drama-averse professional skater Matilda Stevens on Stars on Ice, the pair get off to a less-than-smooth start. Matilda’s dazzling smile and generous spirit immediately set Luca on edge (surely no one can be that nice?) while Luca’s standoffish and brooding behaviour is making Matilda’s job unnecessarily difficult.
Despite their tension behind the scenes, though, there’s no denying their chemistry on the ice. And since Matilda and Luca both need to win for their own reasons, they strike a deal: they’ll work together, playing up their “showmance”, to win the public’s love and better their chances of winning the competition.
After all, they’re both performers for a living. How hard can it be to pretend their feelings are real?

Arbiters of Style
From the discerning editors of FREDERIC and the creative minds at Schumacher, a beautifully photographed and written exploration of an exciting new movement in French interior design and architecture, featuring visionary talentsSomething extraordinary is happening in French interior design. Like the cinematic sea change that gave us the New Wave, the next generation of designers and architects is breaking with the past to forge something entirely fresh - a movement that feels as significant as it is seductive, as trailblazing as it is sensually refined. From rising stars like Hugo Toro and Marine Bonnefoy to established names like Jacques Grange and Jean-Louis Deniot, the twenty-one French designers in Arbiters of Style are leading a bold new charge in the decorative arts: fluent in architecture, but fluent in feeling, too; refreshingly unafraid of color; obsessed with sculptural form; and confident enough to let a single perfect gesture speak volumes. They are proving that the most profound luxury isn’t about having more - it's about knowing exactly what to leave out. Lushly illustrated with nearly 200 color photographs, this stunning survey showcases inspiring interiors in private residences across France, from Paris and Ormesson-sur-Marne to far-flung holiday locales such as Cap Ferret, the Pyrenees, Biarritz, Île de Ré, and Saint-Tropez. This is more than a snapshot of French style - it is elegance and sophistication reimagined by interior designers and architects who think like artists and artists who understand structure, it is a cadre of talent rewriting the rules. In an era when design feels caught between maximalist excess and beige-washed banality, these spaces represent an aesthetic reawakening, a burst of creativity that seems light-years ahead of everything else, reminding us that true style isn’t about following rules - it’s about having the vision to shatter them beautifully.
