New Prize for These Eyes
With “arresting prose and keen insights” (Donna Brazile, New York Times bestselling author of Hacks), bestselling author Juan Williams turns his attention to the rise of a new 21st-century civil rights movement in this highly anticipated follow-up to Eyes on the Prize. More than a century of civil rights activism reached a mountaintop with the arrival of a Black man in the Oval Office. But hopes for a unified, post-racial America were deflated when Barack Obama’s presidency met with furious opposition. A white, right-wing backlash was brewing, and a volcanic new movement—a second civil rights movement—began to erupt. In New Prize for These Eyes, award-winning author Juan Williams shines a light on this historic, new movement. Who are its heroes? Where is it headed? What fires, furies, and frustrations distinguish it from its predecessor? In the 20th century, Black activists and their white allies called for equal rights and an end to segregation. They appealed to the Declaration of Independence’s defiant assertion that “all men are created equal.” They prioritized legal battles in the courtroom and legislative victories in Congress. Today’s movement is dealing with new realities. Demographic changes have placed progressive whites in a new role among the largest, youngest population of Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians in the nation’s history. The new generation is social media savvy, and they have an agenda fueled by discontent with systemic racism and the persistent scourge of police brutality. Today’s activists are making history in a new economic and cultural landscape, and they are using a new set of tools and strategies to do so. Williams brilliantly traces the arc of this new civil rights era, from Obama to Charlottesville to January 6th and a Confederate flag in the Capitol. An essential read for activists, historians, and anyone passionate about America’s future, New Prize for These Eyes is more than a recounting of history. It is a forward-looking call to action, urging Americans to get in touch with the progress made and hurdles yet to be overcome.

How We Think
What is going inside their head? Why do some people think so differently to me?Why do I think what I think?Bringing together startling new evidence from psychology, philosophy, behavioural economics and more, Marius Ostrowski breaks down our thinking into ten ''thinker-types'' that help us understand ourselves and everyone around us.We all fall within one or many of these ten distinct mindsets, from the ''Keen Bean'' to the ''Agoniser'', from the ''Happy Camper'' to the ''Worrywart'', as coined by Ostrowski. Some overlap, others clash. Few are genetically determined; most are the product of our experiences. They are neither ''good'' nor ''bad'', and they are constantly evolving, adapting to our circumstances. Understanding where we and others fit within the ten ''thinker-types'' is transformative. Through these ten ways of thinking, Ostrowski gives us remarkable insight into our own minds as well as those who think differently to us, and reveals how we might even change our minds for the better. How We Think is an eye-opening tour of the mind and the surprising factors that shape not just what we think but how we think. It is the essential thinking about thinking.

Our Monstrous Bodies
'Glitters with menace' LUCY ROSE 'Visceral and affecting' EMMA VAN STRAATEN ‘Hypnotic and deeply unsettling… both tender and terrifying’ CELIA SILVANI 'Utterly unique, experimental and, simultaneously, a page-turner with the sly, creeping pace of a horror film' HEATHER O'NEILL An extraordinary literary horror debut from a rising star. My eyes snapped open and I saw something else in the mirror, something else that wasn’t me… In the wake of an ill-omened romance with a horror cinephile, Brooke arrives in Vancouver to care for her sister, Izzy, who is facing reproductive surgery. But Izzy’s rapidly decaying apartment building, its hallways stalked by an ominous crone known only as Medusa, offers little refuge to the sisters. Seeking solace in the films her ex-girlfriend loved, Brooke soon finds traces of horror bleeding from the screen into her life. Old wounds reopen and new frictions surface, and when Brooke begins to exhibit strange symptoms of her own, Izzy’s concern spirals into obsession. The line between self and sister blurs until only one question remains: who, or what, will survive when all unravels? Through the dual lenses of art and horror cinema, Emma Cleary brilliantly dissects loneliness, motherhood and the body’s threatened autonomy. Eerie and threaded with yearning, Our Monstrous Bodies is a haunting literary debut that blooms with the dark desires we suppress or to which we surrender.
A Year of Last Things
With A Year of Last Things, acclaimed novelist Michael Ondaatje returns to poetry, looking back on a life of displacement and discovery'My life always stops for a new book by him' JHUMPA LAHIRI'A generous, moving book' GUARDIANBorn in Sri Lanka during the Second World War, Ondaatje was sent as a child to school in London, and later moved to Canada. While he has lived there since, these poems reflect the life of a writer, traveller and watcher of the world – describing himself as a 'mongrel', someone born out of diverse cultures. Here, rediscovering the influence of every border crossed, he moves back and forth in time, from a childhood in Sri Lanka to Moliere’s chair during his last stage performance, from icons in Bulgarian churches to the Californian coast and loved Canadian rivers, merging memory with the present, looking back on a life of displacement and discovery, love and loss. As he writes in the opening poem:Reading the lines he loveshe slips them into a pocket, wishes to die with his clothesfull of torn-free stanzasand the telephone numbersof his children in far citiesPoetry – where language is made to work hardest and burns with a gem-like flame - is what Ondaatje has returned to in this intimate history.

Appeasements
'That was yesterday / Those were my hands / That was yesterday / When the future came...' Yves Nedonsel - born in Normandy in 1947 - was a poet of time and out of keeping with his time. His first book, Remugles, was published in 1974. He then fell silent for decades, turning his attention to the study of transhumance paths and the cultivation of a vineyard in his adopted home of Provence. Yet he continued to revise his poems and compose new ones, creating a body of work remarkable for its intensity, its feverish rhythms, and its grim humour. In 'Autopsy of a Week', 'Summerhill', and 'In Quarantine', the speaker rails against the cant of the contemporary world, yet the language is electrified by the stuff of this world: 'the future is shrink-wrapped', and 'the cheapjack shines / mesmerising to memorise...' By turns profane and profound, Nedonsel's poems give voice, as he himself writes, to 'a voiceless cry torn to shreds by writing'. Appeasements is the first selection of Nedonsel's poems to appear in English. The book also includes a translator's note about the poet and the poetry, as well as several of Nedonsel's letters. Alex Andriesse has translated into English works by Chateaubriand, Paul Lafargue, Cristina Campo, Roberto Bazlen and Jacques Dupin, amongst others. He is an associate editor at New York Review Books.

Hidden Portraits
A WATERSTONES BOOK OF THE YEAR'A compelling tale . . . Brilliantly insightful and well-written.' - TimesFernande Olivier, Olga Khokhlova, Marie-Therese Walter, Dora Maar, Francoise Gilot, and Jacqueline Roque. These six extraordinary women shared Pablo Picasso's life and were instrumental in his career, yet they have long been dismissed as simply passive models or muses. Hidden Portraits reveals that their lives were - without exception - remarkable. All six were unconventional, independent and talented. All six were tested, both by Picasso's subterfuges and betrayals, and the wider social turbulence they lived through. The extent to which each influenced Picasso's art in major new directions has never been fully acknowledged. Sue Roe delves deeply into the truth of the women's experiences for the first time, to tell the story of Picasso's women from their point of view. Her enthralling book spans seventy years, from Bohemian early twentieth century Montmartre to the glittering Riviera in the 1920s, through Paris under Nazi occupation and beyond Picasso's final years of seclusion. The result is a riveting, atmospheric read about six fascinating and charismatic women, outstanding in their own time, whose individual stories have up to now been glossed over or hidden from view.
