The Narrowing
'A powerful reframing of anxiety' Anna Mathur, author of The Uncomfortable Truth'Compassionate, thoughtful and nuanced . . . I loved this beautiful, brilliant book' Lucy Jones, author of Matrescence'A transformative and compassionate exploration of anxiety' Galit Atlas, Ph.D., author of Emotional InheritanceMost of us are intimately familiar with anxiety, and with its increasing hold on our minds, our hopes and plans, and our bodies. But how well do we really understand it, and what can we do to transform it into something new - into resilience, or courage, or creativit? n this extraordinary book, Dr. Alexandra Shaker, a clinical psychologist, takes us on a journey through the body - from brain to blood to heart to guts - to examine the connections between our emotional, psychological, and physical lives. She unravels what the body can teach us about anxiety, and what we can learn from our long cultural history of the anxious impulse. Melding psychology, neuroscience, history, and literature, she considers why-despite all the checklists and scientific advancements-we are still struggling to outrun our oldest terrors, and how a new approach focused on accepting anxiety as part of the human condition can help revolutionise our relationship with it.

Maybe Even Happiness
In this striking collection of short stories, written over a twenty-year period, we find Bruckstein, the storyteller, at his most lyrical. Having completed his works charting the Jewish history of his family and community in the Carpathian town of Sighet (The Trap, With an Unopened Umbrella in the Pouring Rain, The Fate of Yakkov Maggid, also published in English by Istros), his voice is here set free to explore the joys in the details of the everyday. The collection opens with an invitation to a wax-work museum, where the viewer is not confronted with the likenesses of the rich and famous, but of ordinary people; neighbours and acquaintances each with a story to tell, each looking for that elusive feeling of happiness, which, unless we are very vigilant, is so often recognised only in retrospect. His heroes’ lives are presented with deep understanding, with humour, sometimes bordering on irony, but always with empathy and love. A sensitive reader need only follow the invitation, and let the wisdom of these stories guide them.

From Fire, By Water
"Sohrab Ahmari is emerging as one of the finest minds and writers of his generation, and the story of his conversion recounted here will stay with the reader for a very long time." --Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, from the ForewordRaised under the shadow of Iran's ayatollahs, Sohrab Ahmari rejected God as a teenager. Nearly twenty years later, he was received into the Roman Catholic Church while working as a journalist in London. In From Fire, by Water, Ahmari tells the dramatic story of that transformation - from a restless youth shaped by Marxism and atheism on both sides of the Atlantic to a moral and spiritual awakening sparked by the beauty and discipline of the Mass. Both an intellectually rigorous memoir and a cultural reckoning, the book traces a life formed by the defining ideas and upheavals of our time and presents a powerful and compelling Catholic voice. This new edition features a fresh preface by the author, in which Ahmari reflects on the profound cultural shifts since his conversion in 2016, revisits the convictions that first drew him to the Church, and considers the demands of faith in an age of moral and political uncertainty.
Will Work For Food & Other Stories
I’ve recently heard from The Donald who told me that save for what he wrote during his formative creative period, these stories by Jacob Dolphy were some of the greatest ever written. Simply fabulous. He said that and I know Dolphy doesn’t even support the guy. But let’s be real. If you’re into adult fiction that depicts the mystery, joy and misfortunes of ordinary people and are not afraid of something unique or strange, be it surreal or subversive, then this book is for you. If you don’t believe me, believe the authorities when the book is banned in Texas for being transgressive. You heard it here first. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Sa'iba
''Let us go on, then! And I will tell you the story of my sister and her daughter, from beginning to end.''Alis al-Bustani''s Sa''iba (1891) is one of the earliest known novels authored in Arabic by a female writer. Written when the Arabic novel was only in its third or fourth decade, it takes up the leading fictional theme of the era: the question of young people''s choices in marriage in a society where their elders traditionally made these decisions. In Sa''iba, the focus is on what happens after the wedding, as the eponymous heroine has to fend off a jealous cousin who believes he has a right to her. Drawing on motifs of Victorian Gothic writing, brought into an Arab-Turkish fictional context, the novel powerfully shows the continuing hold of old ideas about women''s sexual susceptibility and moral ''weakness'', as such ideas were slowly giving way among educated Arab and other Ottoman middle classes to new ideals of companionship in marriage. Marilyn Booth''s translation is accompanied by an introduction discussing the themes and social context of the novel, a time of modernizing efforts and pushback against European and American power and culture in the Arabic and Ottman worlds. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World''s Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford''s commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

A RADIO 4 BOOK OF THE WEEK 'Powerful . . . a coming-of-age story with a twist' Guardian'Heart-wrenching . . . We need accounts like this haunting, compelling book' Telegraph'A profound and moving tribute . . . It is Lana's inside perspective on what it was like to grow up within this society that makes this such a unique and powerful book' Sunday Times'Wonderfully brave, beautifully written and utterly authentic' TLS'Haunting' Radio Times'Please live' were the last words fifteen-year-old Lana said to her mother. Shortly afterwards Natalia Estemirova was kidnapped outside their apartment block in Grozny, Chechnya. On 15th July 2009, she was murdered for telling the truth. A mountainous sliver of land which creates a natural boundary between Europe and Asia, for centuries Chechnya had been a sharp bone in Russia's throat. Three years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, frustrated by the continued presence of the independence movement within Chechnya, Russia invaded. It was a war of extraordinary brutality. It turned Lana's mother, Natalia Estemirova, from a teacher into a human rights investigator. She became a dedicated member of Memorial, intent on exposing the kidnappings, bombings, torture and murders committed by Russian forces and Ramzan Kadyrov, the Kremlin-backed Chechen President. Natalia Estemirova's life, assassination, and the impunity that followed it, tell the story of Putin's Russia. This is Lana's story of growing up in a war. Of the intense bond between a mother and daughter, desperate to be together even though it was so much safer for Lana to live elsewhere, often for months at a time. It is a book both about being brave and about being ordinary in extraordinary times. It's the fulfilment of a promise Lana made at her mother's grave.
